It was known for decades that the Appalachian culture was inbreeding because of all the birth defects that were in the culture that turned out to be… bad nutrition. (Which was why, BTW, the DOD introduced the School Lunch Program back in the late 1940s. To cut down the rate of 4F from childhood nutrition deficiencies.)
Now, with DNA, we can peer into the past of the Appalachian culture and show that those toothless (from poor nutrition) rednecks were…
Not actually sleeping with their daughters. The DNA shows no higher rate of actual incest in traditional Appalachian culture than in the general background of the US.
Really screwed up my Dad to find out that his sister that he had grown up most of his life was actually his mother.
I didn’t find out for many, many decades later that his fatal drinking and driving accident was generated from his finding out that Grandad was actually Dad. My Dad left behind his wife and three children age five and younger and myself being the oldest.
Back then if it wasn’t incest when pregnant, they would be booted out of the house.
On a different note on Ontario housing with landlord have a minimum 5 months waiting for a tribune hearing with tenants and the majority is non payments.

So, my aunt was really my grandma.
I’m my own grandpa.
I’m my own grandmother! And as I’m a guy (pronouns = “who/cares”), this is really, really confusing…
Why not, works for me.
Civil structure failing when met with un-Civil society.
Cousin marriage is rife in the Muslim enclaves of the UK,the result is an awful lot of disabled kids and as a consequence an awful lot welfare payments.for every cloud there is a silver lining was never so apt.
This will sound “mean” and I don’t care. I truly hope that the Muslims will inter-breed themselves out of existence.
A buggy ride away – that’s how I found a 1st cousin real marriage and today’s 5th-7th generation cousins in Saskatchewan/BC (THE REAL CANADA WEST), proven in documents now!
That family’s descendents did have one child before 1860 with spinal bifida and died early, so the “scientific” jury is still OUT on cousin marriage, as far as I am thinking. Yet anecdotes are not fact. Perhaps British research on their diaspora helps.
The Scottish naming patterns were a huge hint during my 13 year research. Where is my Robert, I asked myself? A buggy ride away! and, he married before the 1851 census. Actually, they walked a LOT in 1840’s, so no buggy. The one horse was a worker for field grains for the 7 farm sheep. Those were 200 acre plots, not fun in -35C. The other farm is 10 miles in summer weather.
Scots arriving in southern Ontario (Canada West then) in 1817 had naming traditions, and so did the German-Dutch USA immigrants who supported or were “nominal” British soldiers settling in previously in about 1793.
My family followed the naming traditions quite well, although there were more than two “Scot’s naming traditions”. Also, the 7th boy probably was named after an uncle who came to Canada “en famille” in 1840.

Sorry, now providing a link to British research.
As a dog breeder, who has done ample solid genetic research, I am sure that you are more than interested in this topic, as I am. I am sure that you manage your genetic outsourcing.
As a psychologist, I have always known that personality and supposedly learned behaviors have a huge genetic component.
My early training was based on Skinner, but I did not believe his theory in total.

You can train a dog to sit, shake a paw etc. with a treat and hug, but you can not change their nature (personality, genetics with differing energy levels). A lab or terrier is not the same as my chosen urban Cavalier KCS.
The sound of some more settled science:

As a wee lad, I had the hots for a first cousin of mine, well before I knew this was a “no go zone”. Saw her recently at a funeral and she still looks great.
Einstein married his cousin.
Turns out they should have been eating their cousins.
No idea of their proclivities.
That’s why God invented the county fair. There are gobs of picaresque ballads, going back to medieval Britain, that begin with a dashing young blade heading out to the county fair to find a bride who wasn’t too closely related.
So no more banjo jokes? I like banjo jokes.
More often than not interchangeable with viola jokes.
For instance: You can tune a chainsaw.
I only crack banjo jokes when I’m desperate. Indeed, frailing!
I’d recommend a great book by now senator JD Vance, Hillbilly Elegy. Basically, poor black people are a tragedy caused by white people. Poor white people are just comedy for liberals.
We have a saying about the North Mountain, history of incest allegedly, “If you ain’t good enough for your own kin-you aren’t good enough for mine”. I noticed when I lived in NFL that some females I spoke with didn’t have to change their name after marriage, because it was the same as their husband. Not sure why thou.
