Western Standard: Apparent explosion hits border crossing at Buffalo

An apparent explosion has hit the Canada/US Rainbow Bridge border crossing at Niagara Falls going into Buffalo.

Video from the scene shows smoke and damage to the inspection/screening area that drivers pass through coming into the U.S.

Traveling down Niagara Street, the car reportedly sped the wrong way into the inspection booths, where the explosion occurred, said the Niagara Gazette.

Ivan Vitalii, a visitor to the from Ukraine, told the Gazette he and a friend were at the 7-Eleven when they observed a car leave the parking lot and travel toward the bridge. Vitalii said he and his friend moved down to the bridge area where they observed what appeared to be the same car on fire near the entrance to the bridge.

“We heard something smash,” he said. “We saw fire and big, black smoke.”

“I’ve been briefed on the incident on the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls and we are closely monitoring the situation. State agencies are on site and ready to assist,” said New York state Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Fox News update:

Explosives were in the vehicle at the time and two people who were in the car are dead, the sources told Fox News‘ Alexis McAdams. A border officer was injured.

The vehicle was driving from the U.S. to Canada and were attempting to drive toward the border officer building, the sources said.

All bridges are closed in the area, and all government buildings are evacuated, according to the sources.

And “…now authorities are walking that back.”

    I really hate half-assed journalists. The implication here is that Ivan Vitalii had a suspicion that something was up and went towards the bridge to see what would happen. However, I suspect he moved towards the bridge after hearing the explosion. It would be nice of the journalist to clarify the statement…if for no other reason, to keep Ivan from becoming a suspect in some nefarious plot.

        Not true. There are countless reasons why it could be legal. One needs to obtain a permit but those are issued depending on circumstances. They may apply to people who attend western universities, they may apply for humanitarian reasons (ex sick relative abroad), they may apply to those who have been wounded and are recovering with treatment in the West, they may apply to people who served their tour already and of course to those who are undergoing military training in the west. Plenty of reasons.

    3. American and Canadian truck drivers were seen walking around kicking their tires on the Rainbow Bridge at Niagara Falls. it’ll be just a matter of time before they blow something up.

      New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the incident happened at 11:27 a.m. when someone driving a car crashed into a median at the border crossing. She added that there’s “no sign” that the incident was a terrorist attack, adding that a “local individual” was involved.

      “There is no evidence at this time that this was a terrorist activity. And that’s what I want to make very clear to the public,” she Hochul said.

    1. Not true. The 7-11 is not all that near the border. It has nothing to do with amything. I lived near Niagara Falls (my husband is from there) for 30 years. I crossed that bridge (and the Lewiston-Queenston bridge downriver) hundreds of times. I’m still amazed that this guy got going that fast in that area. He finally apparently hit/was stopped by part of the U.S. Customs building. Had he tried to continue at high speed down the bridge toward Canada (had he not hit cement barriers first), he would have encountered the toll booths before getting on the open bridge.

    My husband and I crossed the border at Queenston-Lewiston yesterday for shopping and lunch in Buffalo. Very quiet at the border, entering and exiting the U.S. So glad we went when we did.

    1. They weren’t stopped by U.S. Customs. Well, literslly they were! They hit part of the U.S. Customs building/complex while heading towards Canada. Several videos showed the car steering towards U.S. Customs was deliberate. You don’t normally go towards those buildi gs if you’re heading to Canada.

      The few eyewitnesses seem to indicate the ‘explosion’ might simply have been a gasoline fireball due to the car crashing at 100mph.

      Should be security cam clips with a detonation if this was explosives.

      Still could be terrorists, they just suck at at.

  24. Very odd about the contradictions regarding the presence of explosives… From the few videos I have seen, it certainly doesn’t appear that a bomb exploded in that vehicle. It is quite consistent with a very high-speed crash that ripped open a very full gas tank. Reports seem to indicate that the car swerved over to the incoming lanes (from Canada), and lost control after hitting the dividing fence between incoming and outgoing traffic. The vehicle hit something that put it airborne, and then it crashed into something pretty substantial, with not much left of the vehicle or its occupants.

    So, why crash headlong into incoming border traffic? If a terrorist attack, it seems inconsistent with any attempt to cause mass casualties. Were there explosives present in the vehicle that didn’t explode? Merely burned up in the ensuing fire? Was the intent instead to bring an explosives-laden vehicle to the center of the bridge span and detonate it there? Considering the track records of the authorities involved in this, the true motive for this incident will NEVER be made public… for our own “protection”, you know.

From the latest video posted here, it appears that the car managed to launch itself at high speed by hitting a curb, and left a dark trail of what looks like atomized liquid behind it (likely a mix of engine oil, transmission fluid, antifreeze, and gasoline). When the car finally landed on pavement, there would have been lots and lots of sparks, creating a great source of ignition for that atomized liquid cloud that was following the car. Hence a big and sudden conflagration.

      But even without the fire, the two in that care were pretty much doomed; accidents like that are almost never survivable.

    3. Believe you are onto something. Car bombs go airborne after exploding. From the clip it appears to hit an angled barrier and fly up, catching on fire. Predict by tomorrow we will hear it was a freak accident – or something else but today we dont have enough information. Lets postpone WW3 for now.

    1. Perhaps it was yet another of those old “I was hitting the brake pedal as hard as I could, but the car kept accelerating” incidents. We used to have rather a lot of those, at least until nearly all cars had little black boxes that recorded every movement of throttle, brake, clutch, and steering wheel.

  39. I read elsewhere it was a case of car thieves trying to evade a police chase by crossing border bridge (from NY to ON) and losing control of vehicle, instead of getting onto bridge they went airborne and crashed into a customs support building.

  43. The absence of a shock wave from the explosion, IMHO, points to a ruptured fuel tank explosion. Car going fast enough to get that airborne was packing some steam. Enough to tear it violently apart, and that’ll get you a fireball. Just my $.25 worth.

  45. Didn’t look like explosives to me. Car flew up after hitting the divider and there was a fuel “explosion” (more precisely combustion) of the fuel when the wreck hit the ground. An actual explosion – of explosives – doesn’t look like the stuff you see in movies or airshows. It looks like what you see when they blast a quarry. Or the “crump” of artillery shells. Short flash and grayish/black smoke with a shockwave as hot gas expands outwards. Relatively boring, which is why you never a real one in movies. If people can’t tell? It wasn’t explosives.

    Not even a day later and the border crossing is open.

    They destroyed a Bentley instead of the usual MO of a van. Waste of resources and life, without much more than a few hours of giving the media something to speculate about.
    FYI I neither discount or surmise that this is, or is not a terrorist act, I’m just pointing out if it is, they had no clue what they were doing.
