Because the reality is that the “Ukrainians” were convinced communism was a Jewish plot (which it certainly was not, but that didn’t matter) and couldn’t kill their Jews fast enough. They had earned their own deportation to the East, just like the ethnic Germans of Czechoslovakia.

Regardless of the answer, I would agree with you that the Ukrainians did suffer at the hands of Communist Russia, by a boatload.
Of course there were Ukrainians who collaborated with Germans. It is absurd to demand that they were all clean. They collaborated with Germans primarily because given the insane level of brutality they were subjected to many times over, including the greatest episode just few years earlier, they have seen Germans as means of regaining their independence and secure some payback.* Expecting that those who survived the insane trauma of Holodomor would not take every chance to not let it happen again, and not to ally themselves with anyone and everyone who could help, and not cut those alliances when necessary (as they did) is absurd. There was none else who even made a slightest gesture towards Ukrainians, only Germans did, and a very slight at that, and betrayed them first chance they got.
And yes, of course there were some Ukrainian fascists. And yes, they often enthusiastically participated in deportations of Jews to concentration camps.** But those fascist ideologues were fringe and rejected by Ukrainians as they did not serve the cause of Ukrainian freedom. For example, Bandera an UPA opposed the formation of SS Galitzen as it drew troops from UPA (not that Galitzen were ideologues, for the most part they seen their service as means to regain freedom, just different way than UPA). None of this is a simple story. It is an Eastern European story and sad and desperate one.
There were also many Ukrainians who had no clue about fascist ideology and just hated Jews because Anti-Semitism was very old in these parts of the world. And not just these parts of the world, but all over Europe. But let’s get back to this corner of the world. Remember Protocols of Elders of Zion was a 19th century tsarist forgery that triggered multiple enthusiastic pogroms long before Hitler or Stalin were born. That does not mean that 19th century russians were fascists. No, they just hated Jews and given an opportunity lashed out, there was no ideology to it.
Odessa pogrom was pretty much that but half a century later with local Ukrainian population being the culprit. It was a despicable atrocity but not motivated by ideology just rabid hatred and the perception that Jews were communists.***
*Payback that was typically blind and misdirected at Poles, at Jews etc.
**Coincidently SS Galitzen as a unit did not take part in that. It does not make them good or bad, just a fact. They of course committed other atrocities in Slovakia and Balkans but not on Ukrainian Jews.
*** Many of whom of course were. Jews were overrepresented among high-ranking communists in Soviet Union at the time, but in no way majority of Jews embraced communism for ideological reasons or some similar nonsense.
As an aside: Stalin, loved using Jewish communists in leadership positions in the Warsaw Pact, because they had no support within the local populations and thus were fiercely loyal to Kremlin, see for example “Rosa Luxemburg’s Contraceptive Cooperative” by Leopold Tyrmand (a Polish anti communist Jew).

People should understand that we learn by listening to others’ views, whether we agree with them or not, and we better ourselves by listening and understanding.
Thanks, one thing that often gets missed in discussion of WWII and the world that participated in it: anti Semitism was a norm then. It wasn’t just Anti Semitic Germany and maybe Austria. Everywhere Germans conquered there would always count on finding collaborators who could not give a damn about Nazi ideology or being Aryan and all that bullshit but really hated Jews. Such was Europe and North America in the 19th and early 20th century. So you had Dutch and French and Polish and Slovak and other collaborators who were not Nazis, who probably resented Germany conquering their country but they just hated Jews. So in the most revolting, but purely opportunistic, and not ideological fashion they collaborated and often enriched themselves in the process. And there also was a lot of Jewish collaborators who seen collaboration as an only chance of survival.
No allied country ever went to war because they were outraged about Holocaust. They did not know and did not care to know. Witold Pilecki (later murdered by communists) infiltrated Auschwitz (labour part of the camp not the extermination part) and gathered evidence on German atrocities, he escaped Auschwitz evidence was passed to allies who did not want to listen and refused to act on it (both Western and Soviet). It was only when the concentration camps were getting liberated that the outrage finally erupted.

Let us not forget that there were many other ‘foreign’ SS units within the German military. Those from Eastern Europe fought mainly against the Soviets, western European units tended to have some members who were part of pre-war local independence movements, such as the Brittany unit from France. Though there were some that sympathized with the Nazi movement, I doubt that most were actual hard-core Nazis, but saw that a relationship with the Nazis would help them achieve their goals of independence from oppressive regimes and political systems.

That movie, Argo, was quite good, if my memory serves me correctly. How historically accurate is it?
When I was in the armed forces I worked with one of the individuals involved in the operation who described it to me in detail. It’s been ages since I saw the movie, but from what I can remember, as expected, the movie was heavily slanted to show the American involvement as considerably more active than it was in fact. First, the idea for how to run the cover — making a movie etc. was entirely a Canadian idea. Second, the Canadian security personnel were the ones who smuggled in the civilian clothing, documents etc. under the uniforms. And it was a Canadian MP who stared down (more like glared down) a mob of Iranian fanatics who wanted to take over the Canadian embassy at the outside of the revolution and put the run on them — a scene which is never shown in the movie. The Americans were very passive participants more or less just doing what the Canadian security personnel told them to do — quite understandable under the circumstances.

Regardless of the answer, I would agree with you that the Ukrainians did suffer at the hands of Communist Russia, by a boatload.
Of course there were Ukrainians who collaborated with Germans. It is absurd to demand that they were all clean. They collaborated with Germans primarily because given the insane level of brutality they were subjected to many times over, including the greatest episode just few years earlier, they have seen Germans as means of regaining their independence and secure some payback.* Expecting that those who survived the insane trauma of Holodomor would not take every chance to not let it happen again, and not to ally themselves with anyone and everyone who could help, and not cut those alliances when necessary (as they did) is absurd. There was none else who even made a slightest gesture towards Ukrainians, only Germans did, and a very slight at that, and betrayed them first chance they got.
And yes, of course there were some Ukrainian fascists. And yes, they often enthusiastically participated in deportations of Jews to concentration camps.** But those fascist ideologues were fringe and rejected by Ukrainians as they did not serve the cause of Ukrainian freedom. For example, Bandera an UPA opposed the formation of SS Galitzen as it drew troops from UPA (not that Galitzen were ideologues, for the most part they seen their service as means to regain freedom, just different way than UPA). None of this is a simple story. It is an Eastern European story and sad and desperate one.
There were also many Ukrainians who had no clue about fascist ideology and just hated Jews because Anti-Semitism was very old in these parts of the world. And not just these parts of the world, but all over Europe. But let’s get back to this corner of the world. Remember Protocols of Elders of Zion was a 19th century tsarist forgery that triggered multiple enthusiastic pogroms long before Hitler or Stalin were born. That does not mean that 19th century russians were fascists. No, they just hated Jews and given an opportunity lashed out, there was no ideology to it.
Odessa pogrom was pretty much that but half a century later with local Ukrainian population being the culprit. It was a despicable atrocity but not motivated by ideology just rabid hatred and the perception that Jews were communists.***

Thanks, one thing that often gets missed in discussion of WWII and the world that participated in it: anti Semitism was a norm then. It wasn’t just Anti Semitic Germany and maybe Austria. Everywhere Germans conquered there would always count on finding collaborators who could not give a damn about Nazi ideology or being Aryan and all that bullshit but really hated Jews. Such was Europe and North America in the 19th and early 20th century. So you had Dutch and French and Polish and Slovak and other collaborators who were not Nazis, who probably resented Germany conquering their country but they just hated Jews. So in the most revolting, but purely opportunistic, and not ideological fashion they collaborated and often enriched themselves in the process. And there also was a lot of Jewish collaborators who seen collaboration as an only chance of survival.
No allied country ever went to war because they were outraged about Holocaust. They did not know and did not care to know. Witold Pilecki (later murdered by communists) infiltrated Auschwitz (labour part of the camp not the extermination part) and gathered evidence on German atrocities, he escaped Auschwitz evidence was passed to allies who did not want to listen and refused to act on it (both Western and Soviet). It was only when the concentration camps were getting liberated that the outrage finally erupted.

When I was in the armed forces I worked with one of the individuals involved in the operation who described it to me in detail. It’s been ages since I saw the movie, but from what I can remember, as expected, the movie was heavily slanted to show the American involvement as considerably more active than it was in fact. First, the idea for how to run the cover — making a movie etc. was entirely a Canadian idea. Second, the Canadian security personnel were the ones who smuggled in the civilian clothing, documents etc. under the uniforms. And it was a Canadian MP who stared down (more like glared down) a mob of Iranian fanatics who wanted to take over the Canadian embassy at the outside of the revolution and put the run on them — a scene which is never shown in the movie. The Americans were very passive participants more or less just doing what the Canadian security personnel told them to do — quite understandable under the circumstances.
