  6. Just got done watching reporter Annmarie Bordern on BNN news TV, covering the NATO meetings. She makes the point that from now on, ALL countries have to meet the 2%-of-GDP target as a minimum. One wonders what the Liberal-NDP government is going to do.

    1. They intend to use creative accounting and attach non defence spending to the defence ministry to make the numbers work out. They’ve been talking about it publicly already.

    “They’re saying that after Russia leaves Crimea, which is where their head is at, they’re going to potentially privatize and create a mercenary army similar to the Wagner Group.”
    Zelensky has said outright that the only way he could see the war coming to a successful close is if Crimea is back under Ukraine’s control. This is likely a non-starter for Russia, which overtook the region and has continued to gain terroritory in Ukraine.

    2. Plenty of better places to cut spending. Foreign policy is one of few legitimate reasons for the existence of federal government. And an orc betterment program is possibly the best Western policy since Ronald Reagan (also of course the “analysis” and numbers linked are a purposefully distorted ridiculous interpretation).

  9. It is true that Canada spends only 1.3% of GDP on military defence. But CTV news breathlessly reports that Trudeau and DND are making “great progress” on following up on Trudeau’s apology to the descendants of a black, WW1 regiment:

    Turns out, well, evil Canada didn’t treat black soldiers all that well between 1914 and 1918. But it’s good that, these days, the money spent on “equity and inclusion” is part of the 1.3 percentage calculation.

    1. In addition to not meeting the general spending requirement with NATO of 2% of GDP for military, NATO had stipulated 20% of that budget amount needs be spent on equipment. For many years Canada was spending closer to 10% on equipment and I believe Ottawa’s military office expenses and pensions were rolled into that 1.3% that Canada was spending.

      Without creative accounting / lying about everything the federal #Libranos touch, tier 2 Canada shorts the military budget by at least $16 Billion each year in overall spending, and billions spent on actual equipment and not cushy offices in Ottawa.

      I’d link to the NATO expenditure page, but my faith in those numbers is suspect as they originate from Ottawa.

    1. If you’ve not seen Once Upon a Time in Hollywood then you really must. I admit to being a Tarantino fan, and IMHO this is his best film ever. I suspect we’d live in an entirely different world today had we not all had our 1960’s youth and innocence stripped away by the likes of Leslie Van Houten and her psychotic murderous rampage … if Tarantino’s film of revisionist history taken place.

      1. Kenji, we enjoyed it so much at the cinema that we bought the Blu-ray. We are also Tarantino fans and agree this is his best.

        (As an aside, remember the scene with Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski driving from Cielo Drive to the Playboy Mansion? I swear Tarantino used CGI to put Polanski’s real visage in that scene. Blink and you’ll miss it but I swear it’s him.)
