Buyer’s remorse

If the federal government has its way, these folks won’t be the only disappointed car buyers in Canada, especially after 2035. Undoubtedly we’ll be told not to worry since “technology always improves”. As demand is forced to rise by virtue of legislation, $72,000 won’t come close to a standard purchase price in 2035.

Fleming said before buying an all-electric Volvo C40 Recharge, he checked the vehicle’s range, which was advertised as 364 km on a full charge.

Fleming says he made the $72,000 purchase in November and that it wasn’t long after that he and his wife became concerned about the distance the car was travelling on each charge.

“We are only getting about 225 km per charge – nowhere near what they’re advertising,”

  1. This should not be surprising. All auto manufacturers will advertise the performance of their vehicles under optimal conditions. With batteries providing the motive power, the energy stored will vary heavily dependent upon ambient temperature (batteries lose a lot of capacity for temperatures close to or below freezing), road conditions and tire quality. All of these will reduce the anticipated range.

As for this, “On April 5, Volvo announced plans to give its electric vehicles an upgrade to improve range and efficiency.” It’s pure BS. They can improve range by providing a bigger battery which will cost much, much more. You cannot decrease the charge time very much or the LI battery can ignite. Once an LI battery catches on fire, there’s no practical way to put the fire out, because both fuel and oxidizer are in close proximity within the battery.

And this is VW. Remember, the car company which lied its ass off about its diesel tailpipe emissions?

    1. The EPA knows their mileage ratings are utter rubbish and have NOTHING whatsoever to do with the REAL WORLD driving conditions of EV vehicles/drivers. Why? Why would a “science” branch of the U.S. government publish such political propaganda in lieu of useful FACTS?

      You know the reason why.

    2. Didn’t the Chin-kyes Buy Vulva years ago.. Their own home version are BBQ-ing at a great rate.

  2. The Liberal-NDP plan is you take public transit.

Have you noticed the 15 minute city discussions which are slowly taking place?

And once 2035 comes, they’ll introduce an electricity tax. They’ll need to replace the taxes they currently get from hydrocarbons.

  3. I see EV commercials, just watched one for Mazda and another for BMW, and the cars are always sounding like … well, like cars. Stupid question maybe but do they all have computerized IC car sounds programmed in or is it more of the big lie?

  4. Technology always improves, but not always in the direction we hope or expect. Electric vehicles are battling an implacable foe — thermodynamics — and there is no guarantee that engineers can overcome its constraints enough to produce a truly practical EV that everyone will want even in the absence of government threats and bribes.

    1. You cannot “overcome” the laws of thermodynamics. They are an implacable foe. The bigger challenge is energy storage density. Batteries have a maximum energy density about 5% that of diesel fuel (MJ/kg and MJ/m³), making the range problem the fundamental issue.

  5. The electric car fad is the biggest scam since … We’ll see how it works once electricity costs are unaffordable to the majority. But, isn’t that the whole point?

  6. Ignorance is its own reward.

Ford loses ~$66,000 per electric vehicle sold in the last quarter, and we’re supposed to sing their praises because all that money lost is in a good cause. Can’t wait to watch them go down in flames.

    1. Remember that auto manufacturers are FORCED to build EV’s because of the CAFE fuel efficiency standards. The entire EV charade is pre-fabricated by the US government. And CA

  7. Don’t ever believe rated distance on a full charge on any electric vehicles.

WE all recall the EPA gas mileage ratings of the past. I’ve only seen one or two vehicles that ever came close, and that was the Hyundai Elantra (2017+) and the Chevrolet Cruz (2018+) that has now been discontinued in North America. The Elantra still goes the farthest on a gallon of gas.

    1. Well there was the VW Rabbit Diesels and they did get very close to their rated EPA mileage but were slugs on the road.
The next closest were the Geo Metros and its brother the Suzuki Swift.

  8. Gov’t everywhere lied about all aspects of the global scamdemic, have lied about fudging the numbers related to global warming for a few decades now, lied about “caring for the people” and how we all need to change our behavior to save the planet while the sea level hasn’t changed an iota, and media went along with this completely.

But now they’re not lying. Even though for decades all I’ve seen from gov’t is lies upon lies upon lies.

It was VW’s turn a few years ago, now it’s Volvo’s turn, soon Chrysler will be 100% EV’s and they’ll take their turn too.
Instead of being “surprised” we’d be better off turning on gov’t and big business, telling them all to go F themselves while we’re not playing the game anymore.

  9. The biggest joke played on the Eloi will occur in a few years when the charging demand will exceed the grid capacities required and the required doubling of grid capacity which hasn’t yet or ever will be initiated. Night time when the wind blows or daytime when sunny during off-peak hours – for those with high social credit scores only.

  10. If all we had ever known were electric vehicles and someone came along with a brand new invention called the internal combustion engine, it would be hailed as a miracle of engineering that would finally free mankind from the constraints of battery powered cars.

    1. “Imagine everybody owning a small, efficient, inexpensive power generator inside each one of THEIR OWN PERSONAL VEHICLES! It’s a miracle!”

    2. I believe that’s what actually happened as the first electric vehicle was in 1832 while the first internal combustion powered vehicle was in 1885. Those who have forgotten or never learned history are compelled to repeat it…..
