  1. Eggs were $1.99 for large white a year ago.

    Just paid $5.29 for a dozen medium brown.
    I hate brown eggs.
    half have red spots in them

    Not a single white egg in stock that’s not free range organic for $7.50 a dozen.

      Here eggs haven’t gone up by as much, but they’re still up around 50% from this time last year at various local grocers here in Edmonton.

        This is the worst time of year for eggs. Chickens just don’t lay when it’s dark 16 hrs a day. Cage free/free range are harder to trick with artificial lighting,
        Should be a flood of eggs by Easter.

        The conspiracy theorist in me thinks this is a plot to eliminate the last affordable source of animal protein.

    2. Not eggs, but cream can be ridiculously high. I used to get it at Walmart for under $2 a litre, it was $3.58 the other day. I now get it at Costco for around $2.60. Still too much.

    3. Red spots? I’ve never seen that. Ever. Where are you buying eggs? I buy only brown eggs. Have for years. Hate that I can’t get them sometimes lately. They have darker yokes; more flavor.

  3. In Canada, the infamous supply management system controls the production of eggs. To legally produce chicken or eggs you have to purchase the quota to do so, which is excessively expensive. The quota is carefully controlled to keep supply limited and prices high. Prices are set to ensure that all of the egg producers make a good living. When their costs go up, prices are quickly raised to offset the increases and then some.

    The egg producers employ inspectors to track down anyone who tries to sell eggs without the quotas and stop them from doing so.

    All federal political parties support supply management for eggs, chickens, turkeys and milk.

    Despite federal and provincial charters of rights and freedoms, the courts have always denied any challenges to supply management.

    One more aspect of life where governments and the courts collectively screw Canadians.

        They are smart. They don’t waste a lot of money donating to politicians during election campaigns…they spend most of their money during the *leadership* campaigns. Ask Scheer, O’Toole and Poilievre.

        Bernier is the only party leader with the balls to stand against them (and he’s from Quebec).

    3. I was just discussing this with my GF. My family cottage is on Lake Champlain, where the northern tip juts into Quebec. As a boy in the 1960’s, we would ride down there, and I would look at all the ramshackle farms, with barns falling over and tractors that seemed to be from the 1930’s, and I wondered how they made it.

      The little towns were all poor, with just a few pricey grocery stores. My mom used to wait for dad to come on the weekends, and we’d all bundle into the car to go to the butcher’s for meat, the baker’s for bread, and the market for vegetables. (We actually had a milkman bring us milk back then!) Today, there are big modern groceries – the cheese section at the IGA in Lacolle puts some of the Toronto groceries to shame – and big modern highways, so people can drive up to Montreal (or the Dix-Trante) in less than hour. The homes look nice now, and the barns are all big and new and gleaming.

      Meanwhile, I paid $1.99 at Shoppers for Toronto for a dozen eggs (weekend ‘sale’ that happened every weekend). Today, I would pay $3.29. Yes, it’s higher, but not the crazy jump we see in the USA. And the farms in Quebec now are all prosperous and healthy; I just have to cross the border into northern Vermont to see the same ramshackle farms I used to see in Quebec fifty years ago.

      Is it worth paying a bit more all the time to avoid having to pay a whole lot part of the time, and to have healthy, vibrant farming communities? I used to be dead against; now I’m not so sure.

    And the cans are smaller.

    Not as cheap quick lunch anymore.

  11. I’ve been away a few months. Been hanging out at Twitter since Elon took over. I came back just to rattle the cage of the Davos parrot. But I don’t see any sign of him. Has he been finally banned?

  12. Still $6/doz…lge brown…direct from my local farm.
    There’s a ‘thing’ happening at some of the retail outlets. They buy wholesale flats of 30 eggs, cut them into packages of 10 ea and sell them for the same price as the local farmers charge for a full doz. If you’re not paying attention it’s easy enough to pick up one of these 10pks and not realize till you’re home that you just paid an extra $1.20/doz.
