    1. Agreed! I am almost 71 years old and used to be glad to be a Canadian. Sadly, in the last 20 years, I have come to support Western Canada separation. As the old saying goes “the stupid is strong in the federal government”.

        Look at this “minister.” (The etymological root of “minister” is to serve or to be a servant. In Canada, the word in political circles has morphed to a point where it makes me puke. Kind of like “activist” or “expert” But I digress…)
        Not only is he not trying. He is not even pretending to try. This is a mockery of parliament. And by extension, it is a mockery of every Canadian who once put their faith in parliament. It is certainly a mockery of every Canadian who voted Conservative in the past 2 elections. I believe the # of conservative votes was equal to or perhaps even greater than the # of liberal votes. But regardless of exact numbers, this is a deliberate mocking and dismissing of parliament, the opposition, and any Canadian who voted for anything other than the Prince. And even the liberal voters who may care about something as plebian as say, some day owning a home,
        As I said, he is not even pretending to try anymore. Why bother? The media gatekeepers will keep this shameful exchange out of the public eye.
        This, along with the two tragedies listed above to young children, should be on every news channel every moment of every day.
        If we had a media, we might still have a country.

And to answer an earlier comment, no, there is no way to compel an answer from the liberal slime because the answer is based upon respect for your opposite members and the liberals have none for anyone, save themselves (and in reality, they have no respect for that either). It is the adult equivalent of “la, la, la, I can’t hear you and you can’t make me” while placing one’s hands over one’s ears as a child might. We are being governed by “adults” with all of the maturity of a 3 year old, and an intellect to match. It all stems from l’enfant at the top – Justine the Self Loving.

I wrote the speaker to complain about just this issue: the fact that the PM is hardly ever there for question period and that Liberal members refuse to answer the most basic and clearly defined questions. He, or should I say they, wrote me back with the most “hand wringing” response ever. Basically, my hands are tied he / they wrote.

    Question period is a joke as is our system of government. Liberal arrogance shows the utmost disregard for our democratic institutions. Sadly, the liberal arrogance will continue for years to come as conservatism is a four letter word in Canada.

      1. It wasn’t that long ago that a Con MP rose to ask a question about the influence of the WEF in Canada. The MP gave himself cover by saying he was asking the question on behalf of a constituent. The speaker was blithely carrying on, (probably not really listening anyway), until an NDP MP off camera shouted out “CONSPIRACY THEORY!” and only then did the speaker rise to dutifully shut the Con down.

        I don’t follow anything to do with the HoC, of course, but this incident was reported on a number of non-Canadian podcasts I watch.

    This doesn’t make sense to me. Not at all.

    I recall seeing videos of people flipping houses in the USA who, towards the end of the show, would disclose that they really didn’t do anything worth $20k a year, and this guy is an Uber driver.

    Does being an Uber driver pay enough to qualify for a $5k / month mortgage in Canada? or is he selling crack in his Uber?

    1. Depends on how the houseflippers were structuring it:

      If they were just starting out, they were probably using a NINJ loan, which the loan company would then bundle and sell into the derivatives market.
      If they were doing it for a while, they were probably doing it under a commercial LoC secured by another property their LLC owned.

      There are also investors out there that will give you up to 75% on their appraised value of the property, at a higher interest rate, with no interest or payments until the loan is due, usually either at 3 months, 6 months, or 1 year. Which is why you often see them rushing to get the work done in 90 days.

    $1,959,000 – $1,700,000 = $259,000, so that leave $1000 as a down payment… No one is going to finance a house for 99.94% of it’s value, even in the easy money days, and especially not when the resale market is broken. (the $1.7 million figure is likely optimistic, given no one is buying at that price)

    1. He made a down payment of $260,000. He had a pre-approved mortgage of $5,000/mn. $2.1 M – $0.26 M = $1.75 M.

      $1.75 M @ 2.00% is $7,420
      $1.75 M @ 3.00% is $8,300
      $1.75 M @ 4.00% is $9,240
      $1.75 M @ 5.00% is $10,230

      Those are monthly payments at a 25 year amortization rate. Unlikely he was pre-approved at $5,000/mn as that would imply a 0.1% interest rate. So that is a red flag.

      Also, who approved a $1.75 M mortgage for an Uber driver. Flag # 2.

      And finally, who convinced him he could afford a $2 M home? Strike 3.

      I feel sorry for the family because they are likely to be very unsophisticated. Likely preyed upon by a mortgage broker. Also, how can you buy a home without proof of payment? I bought a place in Toronto and had to put down 5%. That would be $100,000. When it came time to purchase it was either pay cash, provide a mortgage or forfeit my down payment.

      I wonder if this guy was a reluctant property flipper and got caught with falling prices?

He did make a $260k down payment, but with the new value of the home it doesn’t matter, for all practical intents, it’s gone, because as you stated at closing it’s either pay cash, provide a mortgage or forfeit the down payment… He can’t get a mortgage for 99% of the value, he doesn’t have the cash, so that leaves option 3.

        And it was probably the developer that got him to sign on the dotted line (or their sales people) with a 5% down when you sign, 5% in 90 days, and balance on closing, if you are a qualified (i.e you can get a CHMC mortgage)…

        The CBC didn’t bother to ask how an “uber driver” managed to come up with 260k, maybe he had a different job when he bought the place, who knows.

I know the CPC candidate (Cumming) ran to the left of the Marxist Leninist candidate. No one could vote for Cumming and O’Toole with their near marxist ideas so I wonder who paid whom to get O’Toole in as CPC leader and why Cumming would be so foolish as to go along with that nonsense. As it was it was a very close race and I am certain that had Cumming been a bit more to the right Randy would still be living in shame after the way he treated JWR.

      1. Landslide Annie was shown to have cheated twice to get elected. The first time a box of ballots were found in the trunk of someone’s car. No chain of custody could be provided but the ballots were counted and surprise surprise there were just enough liberal ballots to put her into office. The second time she had liberals voting from their homes and their offices. Her third election was more closely guarded and she lost. I honestly don’t know why anyone would run for office. You toil in oblivion and get no reward other than a paycheque and a pension. The party leader tells you how to vote and you do or your paycheque is gone after the next election.

          Well, the paycheque and the pension is exactly why they do it. Most of them wouldn’t be qualified to do anything more lucrative, and it is a golden pension plan. There are always hopes of some other government appointments after it’s all over in elected politics. As Mulroney said, there’s no whore like an old whore. And quoting the divine Trudeau, he rightly called them nobodies outside of Parliament Hill.

          More importantly, I think you nailed the whole problem with our government. It’s all based on a fraud that we have parliamentary or representative democracy. As you observed, we do not. We don’t even have cabinet government. We probably don’t even have prime ministerial government. We have rule by non-elected, non-appointed political apparatchiks in the PMO. They aren’t even “permanent civil servants” of the official bureaucracy.

          Mackenzie King started expanding the technocrats in the Privy Council Office, and Pearson started running things out of his PMO.

          If we had an honest system of government, we’d just do away with Parliament and Cabinet and acknowledge that the country is run out of the back rooms of the PMO. Even the politburo of the CCP has more public accountability.

  22. Firstly… what part of answering a question do the liberals not understand and why are we paying any off these government officials to have a parliamentary pissing matches?
    Second… an uber driver didn’t get a legit mortgage on one income without some form of fraud.
    Thrid… GTA has low property taxes but an additional Land Transfer tax that is equal to the provincial LTT. They bank on people “flipping” properties. Every single time a property changes hands the pot gets filled. So the GTA isn’t looking for you to be able to live in your property long term… same goes for the Real Estate agents and the Mortgage Brokers. They make the money off the flip/change in ownership and not by you finding a place you can afford and live in for years to come. Basically the housing market went from a long term investment to a quick consumable.
    I witnessed agents prey on buyers during the pre-construction wave several years ago in the GTA… good old “Sure in 3 years when it closes you will be able to afford to spend a little more, trust me”. Then when people couldn’t afford it they not only got the commission from the builder for the original pre-construction contract but an additional off of the assignment sale. I overheard a conversation where a Realtor was saying that if a client couldn’t close it didn’t matter because the commission off the flip would be substantially more. Agents who got pre-approvals for clients without the client knowing in order to collect their 5% because the agent can submit the forms to the builder and when the “pre-approval” is accepted is when the agent gets his cut NOT when the unit closes. The agent is already long gone by the time the purchaser is trying to figure out what they are going to do months or years later at closing. Or the agent comes in to “save the day” by helping the purchaser sell the assignment which is taxable on any gain so the government doesn’t mind and still requires extra fancy papers by lawyers and agents that charge even more extra fees for all of this. At the end of the day a lot of hopeful people who did just hardly successfully close on their homes, thanks to agents who assured them these professionals knew what they are doing because they do it everyday, are now looking at their 5 year mortgages coming up for renewal with no possible way of approval at the new rates. Welcome to 1982 my friends…
