On top of all the deaths, Ukraine has seen a massive exodus of refugees, along with catastrophic damage to homes, industry and physical infrastructure. The cost of rebuilding the country has been estimated at several hundred billion dollars – similar to Ukraine’s entire GDP before the war (which may fall by more than a third this year).

Faced with such hardship, do ordinary Ukrainians want to continue fighting? Or do they want to sue for peace? Overwhelmingly, it seems, they want to continue fighting. Though there are a few caveats.

  1. It’s always hard to know what to believe about what’s happening. Especially when there are forces that benefit from any given storyline.

    Even history is suspect. It depends who writes/rights it. Eventually, given enough time, there might be the odd accurate account of a situation. If it affects the narrative du jour that account will not be widely known.

    Recently finished reading Savage Continent: Europe in the aftermath of WWII. Eye opening if true and probably is at least directionally true. Certainly adds shading to the popular current “history” out there.

    All I’m certain about is it is not wise to be certain and dogmatic about most things you read especially on the interweb.

Once the population has been reduced sufficiently, Ukraine will become a dumping ground for the Middle Eastern and African migrants now in Europe. Watch for the migration routes to be tweaked to funnel the migrants directly into Ukraine.

  6. Judging by the huge number of refugees from the Ukraine who have been shipped into our region of Parkland Manitoba I would say those who want to flee not fight have already left the Ukraine.

    1. The ones that I have come across here in Winnipeg at least want to work and got jobs as soon as they can. Kudos to them for that, they are the kind of refugees we need.

      2. Agree! I recently met a young woman from Ukraine who spoke halting English but she had two little ones in tow, a toddler on her hip and she was obviously pregnant with a fourth. I smiled about that thinking these kids will be the future of Canada. She was also wearing a cross on a gold chain meaning she’ll fit right in here into the existing culture without changing it. Even though I am not myself a Christian I happen to like the existing culture just as it and I feel no need to be enriched by more hijabis and clitorectomies.

  7. The cost of rebuilding the Ukraine is less than that of the UN’s plan to pay “reparations” for imagined climate damages. The results would be more obvious and be supported by people who believe in national survival. Giving the Elites of Third World failures cash infusions is just extortion. If the Maldives want to stay above the waves they could cut emissions from tourists flying in to keep their economy afloat.

    Let’s not forget that this is the SECOND TIME the Russians have done this to them in living memory. So it really is no wonder that people say this.

    However, I see no reason for Canada to be spending money sending arms there. It doesn’t support the -people-, it merely props up the corrupt government. Maybe try doing something useful for the people themselves, like find out what they have shortages of and send a bunch over.

Then it’s Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan. We can support one country now or 19 later. Russians are a dying people. Let’s educate them sooner than later before they spread their brand of grief.

          The Ukraine region of 1937 is a foreign country from a bygone era to the Ukraine of today. I notice that many of the most vociferous and vicious defenders of Ukraine, among modern ‘Ukrainians’ living in the West, have never been there, lived there, worked there. But in true tribalist fashion, they cling to a dream of what they imagine Ukraine is today.

          The modern Ukraine (a region barely 32 years old as a ‘country’) has had to literally force people to speak its language, renounce ties to ‘Mother Russia’, and embrace this new reincarnation of ‘blood and soil’ nationalism, of the brand that if tried in Canada, the UK, Australia, etc. would get you arrested for hate crimes.

          Most of the ‘Ukrainians’ I meet in the West, have not lived there ever, or left in the early 2000’s.

          It is very strange that we in the West decided that the Russian campaign in Donbass is the equivalent of a Russian invasion of Sweden or Finland.

          Heck, Zelensky himself is a native Russian speaker.

          Very sad, and very strange, and like everything the Western MIC establishment touches, it has turned to shite.

          2. The Soviet Russians only had to kill 12 million Ukrainians to get such a high proportion of Russian speakers. The Ukraine was historically part of the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth and are not Russians. Most of the Russian speaking Ukrainians despise the Russians. It’s not all about language. A friend of a friend in Zaporizhzhia was pissed off a few years ago because her kids had to take school in Ukrainian. Now she wishes nasty things to happen to Russians. In no way does she consider herself Russian.

            As for vaccines reducing birth rates. Perhaps. I submit it’s too early to tell.

            Have birth rates gone down recently? We’re certainly hearing lots of stories and also speculation that they have. Cause? Whatever the reports’ authors want them to be.

            Key question; during the pandemic did couples deliberately have fewer babies? Have abortions gone up? These two questions should be addressed alongside the claim that vaccines were the primary cause of a decline in birth rates.

It’s worth noting that only a select few media outlets are permitted to operate in Ukraine anymore, and those still there risk losing their license if they publish anything the govt deems inappropriate. This leaves the people with an exceptionally one sided view, one that quite likely is at odds with what they see on the ground. I suspect that the media is proficient in scaring the hell out of them, convincing more than a few that a Russian victory, whatever that may look like, is a fate worse than death.

  17. Polls are cheap. What’s the big deal with war when others are doing the dying?
    Many Ukrainians who didn’t want to fight in the war and who didn’t have connections or weren’t able pay the bribes were turned back at the border and subsequently sent to the trenches. The poll should have asked the question: Should your husbands, sons, brothers, fathers, uncles & grandfathers (they are up to conscripting 60 year olds) be forced into the front line trenches backed up by AZOv fighters?

    Despite a rough, kneejerk start at the beginning of this whole thing, the SDA criwd has largely begun to engage in citizen journalism, and is starting to uncover the truth.

    The real reason the war drags on, is the high percentage of NATO ‘volunteers’ now fighting in the front lines, and the massive supply of NATO money and weaponry. The Ukrainian state is now a NATO welfare dependency. 100%.

    NATO now must fight Russia to the last Euro and last Dollar.

    Russia began seeking to disarm and disband the VSU. They may just end up having disarmed NATO as well!

The first interview is exceptional in that he describes the historical reasons for Putin’s actions as well as US attempts to transform NATO into an offensive rather than a defensive organization.     2. Include Scott Ritter with McGregor, for accurate reporting and assessments of reality.

      McGregor is no BSer, and has the gravitas to support his assessments. Ditto Ritter, both have their contacts to support what is really going on.

        Then I read an account else were, also by an X USA military analyst, who’s report concurred with L Johnson’s take on the war.
        Those 2, plus McGregor all say the same thing about MSM reports, they are propagandists, nothing more.

  24. This is a poll from a country which outlawed opposition and whose military arrests anyone who is suspected of being a “collaborator”, a definition which includes posting on social media.

    They are using Cruise missiles to shoot down drones. How do you think things are going?

      That makes no sense. A cruise missile cannot shoot down anything. They are GPS guided. On the other hand Russia is using anti-aircraft missiles as ballistic missiles. They have to disable the safety that prevents detonation on impacting the ground by self destructing prior to impact. That’s why it is questionable that a Ukrainian anti-aircraft missile hit Poland. The ground impact safety would not have been disabled on a Ukrainian missile. Also accuracy of a Russian anti-aircraft missile used as a ballitistic missile would be terrible.

        Your technical understanding of cruise missiles is lacking, yes they can be used to shot down drones. That does not mean they are actually doing that.

            Ever hear of painting the target, like the USA did to that Russian war ship, and yes, you can lazier paint a drone and the cruise missile will home in on it, has it ever been done, I don’t know, but it can be done .

      2. A C-300 is not a cruise missile. It is a radar guided anti-aircraft missile. It can also be fired as a ballistic missile at ground targets. These missiles are the ones the Russians are too afraid to turn on anywhere near the Israeli Air Force.

        The Guardian screwed up here (gee, what a surprise). Scar is correct: the C-330 is *not* a ‘cruise missile’. You would have a hell of a time shooting down any airborne targets with a ground attack missile unless you were using nukes.
