It’s a bit late in the game for the left-wing corporate media to start noticing items like this, but perhaps it’s an indication that support for such measures is thankfully dwindling.
Since day one of the pandemic, anyone who questioned the usefulness or cost of ArriveCan was met with a blizzard of condemnation along the lines of “How dare you put a price on saving lives!”.
Canadian tech leaders who have built apps for large corporate clients have described Ottawa’s $54-million price tag for ArriveCan as outrageous, explaining that in their experience, most apps are built for less than $1-million.
They also question why the government did not turn directly to a Canadian app developer rather than 23 separate contractors and an unknown number of additional subcontractors.

So my guess is that they spent about 1 million on the app and siphoned off the other 53 million for themselves.
That’s generous.
With the way the app works maybe they spend even less on actual app development.
I agree.
Jagmeet Singh calls it “beyond outrageous”, but he and the rest of the NDP supported El Turd, knowing full well the Liberal record of corruption.
It’s not their money and now they have something better to control the masses.
It’s money well wasted.
Business AS Usual! THIS is how LIEBERALS ROLL!
My how fast the voters forget ADSCAM. This is a feature, not a bug with the LPC. CORRUPTION is a requirement for LPC membership
Well … how the hell do you think will the so called “Liberals” get any donations?
The current government of Canada is so corrupt, the banana republics are positively virtuous in comparison.
“They also question why the government did not turn directly to a Canadian app developer…”
Insufficient opportunities for graft
/Captain obvious to the white courtesy phone please
A nice quote from Patriot Post (Walter Williams):
“What our nation needs is a separation of ‘business and state’…That would mean crony capitalism and crony socialism could not survive.”
This is 100% true for all ‘advanced’ nations: all of Europe, N America, Australia/NZ.
ArriveCan is almost as complex as the Firearms Registry, so there’s probably another $946,000,000 of urgent spending planned by the Liberals before ArriveCan is scrapped.
ArriveCAN was wildly successful, because it accomplished nothing, for just $54 million. To be only modestly successful, it would have had to accomplish nothing for lot more money.
If the government is so profligate with our money why are we giving them our money?
To be fair arrivecan involved integration with the CBSA systems so it wasn’t just a simple app. It’s still pretty outrageous though. A good sized government it project that lasts years doesn’t cost that.
Don’t worry, the bureaucrats who awarded the contract will also get bonuses.
When it’s an ‘existential’ threat (covid, climate change, etc.) ….. caps the profits
and demand net worth statements from any and all government officials and their friends.
Just back from Europe. At the departure airport, I was asked by the airline if I had completed the Arrivecan app. When I informed them it was no longer required, I just got a quick “OK” . Back in Toronto at the Customs check in, the overhead sign still advised to have the Arrivecan document ready. Obviously, it has been too challenging to get it corrected.
Stupid is always expensive.
Development of any electronic system becomes the Mother Lode anytime a government gets involved. In Ontario the provincial Lieberal government pissed away over a billion dollars trying to have a comprehensive electronic medical records system developed. They failed. Interestingly the contractor went on to develop the Obama unaffordable health care registration system which bombed as well. There is nothing like a fat sow feeding at the government through to run up costs through the roof. The result of failure is usually rewarded by subsequent fat contracts after political donations and palm greasing.
I wonder if they ever ‘fixed’ the Phoenix payroll system.
And how much has been sunk into that fiasco.
Someone in the comments section named ntang4
“There are 33 millions Canadians living in Canada – the government should have direct deposited $1m into our accounts. With instructions to create an ArriveCan app (yes, 99.9% of the people will keep the money. The other 0.01%? Would create an app). A lot better than spending $54m on this fiasco. P.S. Yes, this is sarcasm.”
Math much? or They said there would not be any math!!!
You won’t get much work done for $1.63.
This is how junior keeps getting elected.
“They also question why the government did not turn directly to a Canadian app developer rather than 23 separate contractors and an unknown number of additional subcontractors.”
Because, just like the two BILLION dollar gun registry, the ArriveCan app is a -payoff- to friends of the Liebrals. They never cared if it worked, they just used it as an excuse to send money to their bros.
The truly terrifying thing is that most of the people involved in this believed the WuFlu was a killer back when this was all getting set up, and they still put the money laundering first.
As always:
“Follow the Money”.
ESPECIALLY the “spillage”.
