  1. The baby boomers are retiring. (add a touch of COVID craziness).
    Things are gonna get interesting for the managerial class.

    Could be boom times if you actually can build stuff.

  2. As mentioned before a local farm equipment dealership have lost all their mechanics and spray techs to govt jobs. Can’t hire any trained techs for any price. Similar in most if not all farm equipment dealerships. Just pay more you say. Hey buy your own dealership and see how easy it is.

    1. And it’s not necessarily about money – happening everywhere. We are going recruiting on campuses and wondering where all the great resumes are and students are telling us they don’t want these jobs for lifestyle reasons. We keep upping salaries, etc. and it isn’t moving the needle. When I was coming up 75% of the class wanted a job in firms like mine, now it’s maybe 25% and that doesn’t mean the top 25%.
      Honestly, I have no idea where all the people are.

        1. It used to be that government work paid less but compensated with job security. Now it has both. In spades.

          A niece retired after 20+ years working in a bank.

          She’s in her 50’s and got a bit bored. She took a temporary government job and that evolved into an annual contract. She wonders why she wasted those years at the bank. For a job with much less responsibility she gets better benefits and twice the pay.

          Most of the job growth since Covid has been government work.

          This is unsustainable.

  3. A friend with a 2 bay car repair shop in Winnipeg is working by himself. He has one part-time clerical assistant. He used to have 4 full time employees.

    1. Another story is a fellow going to work for a high end auto restoration company. Late baby boomer era fellow. Former big 3 auto dealership wanted him to go for retraining at age 60, buy new tools for the electronic automobiles. Older workers are bailing out to avoid the learning for computerization

  5. It makes no difference. I’ve been applying for job with my ticket for several years. I’m one month away from completing the upgrade to my ticket. I’ve gone as far as offering to work for free and relocate. In exchange for having my last month of time signed off on. No one wants to hire for industrial jobs as long as the liberals keep changing the rules.

    1. A lot of companies would be happy to hire a guy who’ll work for free. You’re not looking hard enough.

  6. Despite there being a shortage of workers, just about every worker’s wage increase is below inflation.
    Winning is still losing.
    You find me a person who says they think Frozenturdistanians are better off than when Harper was in power – despite all his faults, I know – and you’ll have really only found a Liberal retard.

  7. I’m having the same problem hiring someone, but from the other end. My workplace has a sort of ‘anything goes’ attitude: I go in when I want, I take my dog, I drink at my desk, etc. Awesome. But I also work 60-80ish hours a week, and on “days off” I’m working. Everyone I speak to wants the perks of a high-status job, but few want to actually do the work. For those of us who just want to get ‘er done, regardless of occupation, the next decade or so is going to be a good one as our value becomes an ever more rare commodity in the marketplace.

        1. Keep paying your cable bill, and your taxes, contributor, er, I mean comrade!
          Don’t forget to contribute Netflix and Hollywood, and keep going to your work station, especially when its filled with slogans of loyalty to the current thing, otherwise you will be composted, just like undesirable babies in Europe!

  9. First they shut down your job for two years then they complain when nobody wants to work. The government only has itself to blame for the stunted economy. It must be time to meddle in the farming sector.

  10. Gen-x/ cusp of boomer here. Having one’s company and industry get destroyed on account of the Covid-19 response does not help. I have worked in wine sales for over a decade. I have applied to other wine agencies, but interviews have been hard to come by. Age is a factor, which no one wants to acknowledge.

  11. I live in a rural area, the town nearest to me is screaming for workers. A local cafe needs twenty workers could only find five to apply. I’m retired, however my investment portfolio has tanked and is losing money faster than Trudy can spend taxpayer’s dollars thus I fear it’s back to work for me. The liberals living large on our dime, all the time and the retired are suffering because of it. I think the under ground economy is flourishing, that’s what happened in the 80s-I made more working after work than I did after 12 hours working.

  12. I’d wager a lot of these jobs, even for those of us who are willing to work, have so much BS and hoops to jump through to get past HR nobody wants to bother. As an example, heard of a parts job at a dealership where they were putting applicants through FIVE interviews with multiple managers. To hell with that, can you imagine the level of micromanagement that’s coming with that?

    When you have a labour shortage wages rise faster than inflation. That`s what happened under Trump.

    Employers aren`t offering to pay more.

  15. I’m a small percentage owner of a company I’ve spent the last 45 years at.We try to hire people with half a brain in their head.Have you any idea how hard that is.

    1. Its hard to compete with other companies that also want the top percentile. Perhaps if you offered your recruits more money, better conditions, better benefits than your competition?
      Also, do you fire people for telling racial jokes, wearing a confederate flag ball cap, or swearing?

      1. 1) Money does not grow on trees and neither do good people. If there aren’t good people available higher offers won’t make them apparate out of thin air. Further even if it did they can’t afford it.

        2) Normal people do not want to work in an environment of racial jokes, traitor flags, or cussing. At least civilized normal people.

    3 Generations brought up with digital tech, Zero skills, Zero drive and far far too fking woke and LAZY.

    The REAL MONEY is IN the trades…
    My future son in law is a 3rd Year Plumber/Pipefitter…he is the Forman on a fairly lrg jobsite…. What he is given as 1st years…??

    21 year old losers with zero ambition and piss poor attitude…grabbing their 1300 dollar iPhone at every opportunity – more concerned about pronouns and supposed systemic racism.

    I’m near done on boarding for the TME project…at Flipping 70..!! Stupid coin on a 6-1 rotation. (Contractor) Could not resist & Can’t wait..!! & Lookin truly forward to some honest very well paying work.

    That’s the kind of job that’s out there…for those with CLEAR eyes and determination. The rest..?? Welfare recipients for life as long as they can buy their bag of weed and pay their cell bills. Que the tent cities in YVR..

    And Pray tell, who the hell is gonna fix your sink or your car in 10 years..??

  18. It’s a lot easier working for yourself. After all my years of employment I have never found a place that had any loyalty towards me. Did employers always think things were going to go their way? Guess what? People from overseas are starting to get the memo too. Canada is not seen the way it once was. If you treat people like crap people will remember.

  19. I retired in 2018, but due to extreme boredom when the fish aren’t biting, I have checked out some of the companies looking for new workers.
    Apparently, many of the places I have checked out still require you to be fully vaccinated.

    Looks like I’ll keep fishing.
