Blog Notes

We’re back – for now.

The move to the new server isn’t yet complete, as the techs continue to wrestle with an ornery database. Thus, don’t be surprised if we go offline again as they work their way through the mess.

      1. Me Three. Hey, there should be a backup page we can go to in emergencies, that would say something like “As of 9/15/2022 Kate was mark safe from Jeff Bezos/Sundar Pichai/Mark Zuckerberg et al” or if necessary “Your favorite Canadian Blog is undergoing a DOS attack”

          1. At 3 a.m. I was crying at the bottom of my shower, with my clothes on and cold water running. This after a day and a half without SDA. I confess my addiction.

  1. Suggest to them that putting up a simple page with a short explanation is a LOT more friendly than an error message.
Not that hard to do …

  2. I’d posted a notice about the move, but the site went down before many readers had a chance to see it.

    1. Right. But when the site is down, it’s relatively easy to re-direct requests away from the broken site to another, much simpler site, just serving up a single page.

Hackers and pirates do it all the time – you could always ask them for advice 🙂

      (Hint: DNS change)

  3. Nice to see again.
Thought I may have to lock and load and go on a mission.
    (Just kidding…sort of.)

    1. It is important to know that turdeau has not been successful in censoring any commentary he does not approve hence-You can get updates at katewerk on twatter, yeah I know twatter, I refuse to use it ever, getting updates on SDA is the only exception.

  4. I’m off grid often in the warmer months. So catching the notice did not happen. Was worried TurdHole was coming n the move. Anyway, Blur “Song Two” is in order.

  5. Databases are insanely complex, and hard to manage. Places that use them need specialists called Database Administrators, and that’s just to run and maintain one, much less migrate one.
Tables, fields, Data Description Language, Data Manipulation Language, both parts of Structured Query Language. I wonder what SDA uses, MySQL, Oracle, or the MS one whose name eludes me. I was always a big fan of “Linux Apache MySQL PHP” aka LAMP.

      1. Keepin’ it classy here at SDA.
        I suggest a contest:
Guess the structure of the DB, closest guess gets a free book, and heck, maybe someone will come up with a better one than the one currently used, then another contest, how to migrate from old to new, I’m sure your contributions would be without peer.

    1. I could put that on a business card. Could I quote your definitive job description? I could tell customers on the phone, “Databases are insanely complex, and hard to manage.” and leave out that the team sent to them are Manson spawn (insane!) and are also hard to manage.

  6. Missed you Kate and crew. Am hoping for great news this fall with the removal of Dear Leader and his government with freedom, peace, and justice restored for all. Perhaps we’ll get Christmas early.

  7. Yay! Skynet is up again.

The absence of SDA was disturbing to me and several of my friends. Very glad to see it all working again. This site gives me a rock of sanity to grasp in this stormy world in which we live. Thank you Kate et al.

  8. I knew but still felt a hole inside.

Keep going, Kate, we will be waiting for the new server to work for you if SDA goes offline again.

  9. Late to the comment party as always, At least partly due to living on the wet coast, so being the last to rise in Canada each day. That said, I must have checked back seventeen times hoping for a familiar SDA site and not an error message. I even…..EVEN, went to Google and wiki to try and connect. Yep I was concerned that SDA had been got at, like REALLY got at, and maybe permanently taken down. I was beginning to think I must either commit suicide or hunt down the perps and make em pay.

Kate PLEEEESZE Give us a little more warning before doing this again. The ripple through the SDA blogoverse had many of us panicking. Honestly, I did not know that this would be such a torture for me, as it turned out to be. I am now a frazzled specimen of my former self, even my tin foil hat melted at 2.45 pm yesterday, and I’m still peeling the layers of aluminum off my shoulders and the related burn marks are excruciating. I became within 24 hours a quivering blob of human excrement forced to stream reruns of Hickock and the twilight zone simultaneously just to maintain some semblance of reality!!!!!!!

    GLAD YOU’RE BACK!!!!
