Excellent podcast here. Glavin does a terrific job of putting everything in both the historical and current context.
Quillette- Canada’s Unmarked Graves, How the Media Got It Wrong
Quillette podcast host Jonathan Kay talks to National Post reporter Terry Glavin about the blockbuster 2021 claim that hundreds of murdered Indigenous children had been found in unmarked graves, the process by which that story began to unravel in the year that followed, and what the whole spectacle tells us about Canada’s intellectual class.

Glavin has this right. In spite of his reporting the narrative remains the same.
Nobody is moving on this issue. Not the MSM, the catholic church, the aboriginal industry or the librano government. Who cares what the facts are or where the truth is? Not one ‘grave’ has proven to be an actual grave.
In fairness at the outset the natives in Kamloops never claimed there were mass graves. Nobody listened, the story took off and the NYT put it over the moon. All bullshit.
Good on Terry Glavin and Jon Kay.
Yes, they did. They’re the ones that stoked this whole bull**** bonfire in the first place.
They’ve been lying from the start and they knew they were lying.
For twenty years, it has continued to amaze me how stupid the right has become.
This wasn’t about the graves of long-dead children – if there are any actual graves. It was about giving an excuse to raze churches across the land and impugn the history of Christianity in Canada so as to better motivate people to dismiss our history rather than study it.
Just like tearing down statues or renaming buildings has nothing to do with what someone like John A. MacDonald thought of people of a different race. It is never the reason – it is always only the excuse.
They’re are all just excuses. The objective is to destroy any common sense of culture and history. If a rumor came out that Wilfred Laurier might have had a sexual fetish for baby seals, then that would be the excuse for more destruction. They’d tear down some more statues, rename some more buildings, and remove him from the $5 bill. By the time the stories come out showing that it was a hoax, the destruction of that part of our history would already be complete. Twenty years hence, very few people would know who he was or what he contributed because he had been retro-actively canceled.
“Whoops. Sorry about that.” It’s cheap and easy to express regret after you’ve accomplished your destructive mission.
Yet “conservatives” keep arguing the facts – thinking that, if they can prove their point, they can get that slam-dunk feeling of having won the argument. You’re wasting your time and energy. And this is just what the left wants. You can feel all smug about the residential-school-grave thing being, at the very least, overblown and how you knew it all along. What does that accomplish? The churches are still gone. And no young person will ever look objectively at the issue again.
Meanwhile, the left has scored another victory and your values are that much closer to extinction.
Paraphrasing Mark Steyn: The right is obsessed with winning the argument. The left just wants to win.
Good comment. However, today’s right is changing and I have a little hope.
Are you kidding? Outing Laurier as a furry, with a predilection for young seals in particular, would make him a national hero these days. They’d have to invent a new colour on the pride flag just for him.
It is common for “Christianity” to be slurred for the never-ending evils of Roman Catholicism. This is no different.
The media didn’t get anything wrong. They were complicit.
Big difference.
Further – It’s a fng day late and a dollar short for Kay and other bought and paid for “independent” media types to have their faux road to Damascus moment while cleverly couching their language to suggest that the media were only …”wrong”. Which kind of gets me thinking how this editor in chief for the very Liberal Walrus magazine and who collaborated with Gerald Butts for Trudeau’s memoir Common Ground gets to play some kind of neutral observer/journalist while looking like Edward Murrow in the process.
Such Bullshit. Where were you last year Kay? I have more respect for Tristin Hoper who wrote early and wrote often about this scam.
Still doing Scotch and cigars at the Rosedale Club with your pal Coyne and Paikin, Kay???
Yeah no quarter for Kay who only recently jumped off the Trudeau train. He’s still a libtard.
You are so bang on on this thread Burton absolutely bang on
I pointed out on day one of this issue that GPR cannot detect what they were claiming. Anyone who has used GPR knows this. The T’Kemlups band needs to be criminally charged with fraud (or whatever will stick) along with every other Indian band council that jumped on this bandwagon. The media needs to have their complicity rubbed in their faces constantly. It ought to be an election issue, but Canadians are so completely pusillanimous it won’t matter.
Yep. Just from watching Time Team I knew the “mass grave with 215 individuals, some as young as 2.5-years-old” was clearly a lie. And even assuming 215 separate burials [that’s called a “graveyard” and never a “mass grave”, media wh0res] was doubtful, including giving ages.

Plus, the graveyard PRE-dated the residential school. Everyone knew it was there.
In their defense, the local native elders who came forth to speak the truth were either ignored or silenced, but they *did* come forward with the truth. The activists who exploited this wasted no time in getting their own narrative out to the news media.
I changed channels during the last federal election when they placed a reporter there in Kamloops and somehow managed to work the residential school and unmarked (actually unmaintained) graves into their election coverage. Shameful exploitation on the part of CTV.
Little Justin’s father was prime minister for 15 years, during which the residential schools were still operating.
Why isn’t #HowManyKidsDidPierreKill not trending?
Probably for the same reason #HowYoungWasShe isn’t trending for the current Trudeau.
A bought media stays bought.
There are precisely two Prime Ministers who were not PM or in the cabinet of a government operating residential schools. These are Harper and Turdeau II. The rest were clearly racist bastards. The biggest racist bastard of all was Liberal PM Alexander Mackenzie who passed the Indian Act starting it all.
Kay and Glavin are pretending to be slightly less corrupt and dishonest.
If they were stupid enough to believe any of this and it took them a year to figure it out they are complete morons.
If they figured it out early and said nothing they are corrupt liars.
And a slightly less stupid and corrupt media liberal is still a dishonest piece of shit.
That turd won’t polish up very well.
Every time I drive by the native casino I see that the flags are still at half mast supporting this lie.
Trudeau, activists, media.. They got their narrative and they are going to run with it.. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t.. The Church and the CDN government could have done nothing and been monsters all the same.. We won the war is just not an argument you are going to win when you take the losers under your wing..
Got it wrong?
Mistakes require one to be confident about what they first said, being disingenuous from the start means it’s intentional.
It was never about informing it was about influencing by using a liberal preferred narrative that only white men are sinners.
They both talk about reporters and journalists as if 95% of them aren’t hopelessly incompetent liars.
They talk as if there haven’t been hundreds of examples of the media getting stories completely wrong and telling massive lies to the public.
