Back in the 1890’s, a combination of railroad building and prospectors set off a lot of fires in the East Kootenay region of British Columbia. Prospectors were known to set fires judiciously as the blazes would better expose the rocks they wished to examine. Anyway, the area became known for its wildlife as the pastures produced by the burns proved very hospitable to elk, etc.
Fast forward about 60 years, when it is realized that the large ungulate population in that area is declining. Seems that the fire suppression efforts over the previous years have prevented any seriously large burns, and trees have overgrown the pastures produced by he prior burns. Oh, horror, trees vs animals.
Last I heard, it was still a toss-up as to which would be preferred.
