  9. The slightly curious might wonder why just one pipeline has been shut off, I mean – no Rubles = no gas, right?

    So a little research indicates the pipeline isn’t so critical after all, with further development of it halted fifteen years ago in favour of Nord Stream. Plus, the 1996 supply contract was due to end in, ta da, 2022. Gazprom has wanted to walk away at least since 2020 when the Stockholm Arbitration Tribunal ruled the contract should be changed in Poland’s favour, having to refund $1.5 billion. They already shut the supply off once last year.

    There are still a lot of contracts (some running until the end of May) priced in Dollars and Euros that will be fulfilled, so the other routes are unlikely to shut down immediately.

    1. Russians bought a lot of German politicians. Former chancellor Gerhard Schröder now at the helm of Gazprom is the most glaring example. And it wasn’t just Germans, Polish crypto communists who briefly lead the country in late 90s and early 2000s like Aleksander Kwaśniewski got bought off for a lot less. Same was happening in Ukraine btw (Clinton’s Podesta Group was actively helping those efforts).
