  2. I don’t see the point of going after individual Russians except those with strong ties to Putin. As an example, should we ostracize Russian NHL hockey players? No, of course not.

  4. This action is bullying in the disguise of virtue signaling. It is, at its heart, cowardly. Targeting a Russian that is not directly involved in the conflict is a “Me, Too” gesture, a miniature “Might Makes Right” scenario – “I can punish you so that I look concerned (even though I don’t really give a damn) just because I can”. It would take more strength of character to not engage in weakness, to defend the rights of a expatriate Russian citizen as if they belong in your own family. Stop punishing the innocent.

    1. I had a flash of a large group of incensed Ukrainians and their Antifa supporters pulling a typical Montrealer move of attempting to destroy the venue of the OSM and injure (or worse) the young pianist. Security is the most likely reason for this sad decision.

    I look forward to the book burnings of Anna Karenina, Dr. Zhivago, the Gulag Archipelago volumes, and War and Peace. War and Peace in particular has some heft and will help end this cold dammed March.

    I also believe that all ballet companies practicing the nutcracker for its heroic return this fall should be forced to sit down and start eating. Skinny Tchaikovsky dancers must be canceled.

    Some Russians have invaded the Ukraine. Are all Russians responsible for this? Should they all bear consequences for it?

    Some people from the Ukraine have done some bad things somewhere at some time. Are all Ukranians responsible for this? Should they all bear the consequences?

  11. What’s next, anyone who has ever had sex with Russian prostitutes will have their Canadian bank accounts frozen (asking for a friend)? The Canadian establishment is the moral equivalent of fascists everywhere. Dehumanizing people based on citizenship, political affiliation, sex, or race (all whites are racists) is the stuff of mindless cowards hiding behind a state run by sociopaths. Canada can no longer be critical of humans rights abuse in other counties by nature of the authoritarian cesspool we have become under the Spawn-Fuhrer.

    1. I think I know what the pianist and soprano Anna Netrebko are feeling. I’ve got a few stories to tell about what I endured while I was growing up simply because my parents and I came from Berlin.

      1. I know what you mean. Kids can be cruel. Their prejudices came from home, from their parents. This too, is shameful.

        Back in the day, as a city kid growing up in Montreal I desperately wanted to play skip rope in warmer weather so I easily picked up street French before it was taught in school in an effort to fit in with other kids. Out of the blue, I was once told by a French Canadian kid to go back to England! Shocked, in broken French, I replied something that seemed likewise as much a command, “et toi, retourne en France”. Confused, I couldn’t figure out that kid since I had French kids in my class at school who were there to learn English. I later learned that their parents sent them there to have job advantage over other French kids who only spoke ‘joual’ and no ‘Engleeesh’.

        As an aside– and an odd coincidence as to how small this World really is:
        Scenario, from my grade 1 school days: one kid in class who didn’t want to be there, would cry, “je ne comprends pas!” I’d give her tissues, saying, “c’est correct” and other things like, “it’ll get easier”. One day, I later met her bilingual mother who told her daughter to listen to “Nancy,” since we became friends.

        Fast forward to last year when Viva Frei ventured out of Anglo Westmount onto the streets of Montreal during the covid curfew protests: I recognized my former classmate who spoke to him in perfect English about what the unfair curfews meant to her and her people in the deeply Franco-Ethnic neighborhood around the Olympic Stadium. How thrilled I was to see dearest Joanne again!

        1. Unfortunately, some prejudices refuse to dissipate with time. Even into my early 30s, there would be some jackass who insisted on making some senseless remark about Germans, even though the war had been over for more than 40 years.

          It’s an interesting twist that the German tradesmen who came to Fort St. John to earn their living 50 or 60 years ago are now spoken of with great respect in town.

  13. If that is the way it works in Canada, The Truckers in the Freedom Convoy that had their bank accounts frozen were Canadians. Justin Trudeau is a Canadian. I demand that his bank account be frozen because he is a Canadian. This makes about as much sense as the child prodigy piano player’s travesty judgement. Putin, Nuke Montreal!

  14. I grew up in a town in the interior of British Columbia where Slavic and Japanese people (some Canadian, some not) were interned during WW I and II for having committed the crime of coming from the wrong part of the world.

    This isn’t as bad, but its cut from the same cloth. We’re not judging people for who they are, but rather what group they come from.

  18. My local “European” (Polish-owned) grocery store still has cans of non-alcoholic Baltika beer on its shelves (made in St. Petersburg).

    I’m tempted to make the store an offer. Nobody will buy it any more, and it will get hard to re-stock in any case.

    I suspect a few enterprising Russians will keep some Pepsi cans as souvenirs of better times.
