Ezra Levant has a detailed explanation on his Twitter feed of the process by which the Ontario government is attempting to block the use of the donated convoy funds. He notes that the protest organizers will have an opportunity to respond in court in a day or two.
It’s clearly an attempt at asset forfeiture; it’s similar to the cops’ theft of the convoy’s fuel a few days ago. This is a tactic that would normally be used to seize a boat or a car belonging to a drug dealer. They are likely to have a hard time proving that Tamara Lich is some sort of dangerous felon.
But you can’t rule out the simplest answer — that the government was under such political pressure to shut down the truckers, by any means or method necessary, that they simply decided to deceive the court — anything to make these truckers go away, to hell with the law.

The simplest answer is very often the correct answer.
If a judge issues such an order on such flimsy evidence, can said judge be disciplined or even disbarred?
Is there a punishment to the crown if the action is proven without merit, frivolous and vexatious?
I would like to know. If there is no down side to the crown, it is a mechanism that will be abused a lot in the future.
There are no effective disincentives under Canadian law to police, prosecutorial, or judicial abuse of power. At all. I have watched judges sign warrants without reading them, Crown prosecutors knowingly lie under oath directly in front of people who know they are lying, and entire police departments fabricate crimes to prosecute innocent citizens for the glory and prestige of the department. All were “caught”, none received any punishment at all.
Most Canadians would, I think, be appalled and demanding reforms if they had any idea of the level of personal and petty abuse of power that goes on in the court system. Forget criminal courts, we’ve seen right here what civil courts are willing to do to P.S. Knight and Co.
Exactly. The only time the courts risk a rebuke is if they were to ever rule against the governments interest. If that were to happen, then the governments bought and paid for media companies would publicly flog them. The whole corrupt system knows that so long as all the bureaucrats row together, nobody gets thrown overboard.

Ezra’s point about the necessity of showing an indictable offence is taken, but… The Criminal Code is a long document and it’s quite possible that there’s some obscure section of it that has been violated.
So the question is, if the organization collecting the money is not in Canada, how can it be taken by a Canadian court?
It hasn’t been seized. They have merely ordered all financial institutions in Ontario not to distribute it.
