Week by week, I watched Glenn shrink and fade. It was, in part, the cancer but, even more, it was the enforced isolation that took its toll on him. He did, however, remain safe from COVID-19; the disease did not spread in his nursing home during his residence, and he was never infected.
During our visits, he told me that he spent his days alone in his room, with no sense of time passing. Except for the occasional visitor – like his kids or me – his experience was essentially solitary confinement. Nursing home staff would set his meals outside of his room and leave before he retrieved them. No contact. Once, he fell while taking a shower, and it took a long time before a staff member found him unconscious. Far too long.

It has to be asked here, what are we trying to achieve.
One assumes that the entire point of the Flatten the Curve had the primary of ‘preventing collapse of hospital system’ and secondary of ‘continuing to provide hospitals to so that our standard of living can be maintained’.
One would assume that. If the function is to protect our standard of living and, by extension, our culture and society, then yeah, fair enough. Remember this was first offered up in March 2020 so it seemed like a good idea. Take 2 weeks for the team, flatten the curve, society is saved. Ya.
Except we seem to have drifted somewhat. There was a massive push in the UK to protect their NHS at all costs. They were – oddly enough – proud of the NHS and proud of how they protected it.
Sorry, but WTF? The ‘amazing’ NHS exists to provide for the people, and not the other way around. The role of hospitals are to focus health care for the PEOPLE into one place because central locations are – one assumes at least – the most cost effective way of getting health assistance to the most people.
So when you get to the Apocalypse (or whatever) the hospitals need to be hospitalling. You run the health systems into the ground if you need to in order to PROTECT THE PEOPLE. If it falls over you build more hospitals. You do not protect the hospitals at the expense of the people. There is no point in having a preserved hospital standing alone over a sea of bodies. Better to have a ruined hospital sheltering survivors cause once they get back on their feet they can always build a new one.
People. First.
I digressed. Back to the nursing home.
What are we trying to do?
The simple answer is protect lives.
The follow up question is what is life? Two feet, heartbeat, brain function. That person is alive. Job done. Right?
What is life? Big open question, but I put it to you that the medically correct answer is only part of the answer. People have since the dawn of people shown a massive almost counter productive desire to be free. They will die for freedom. People are willing to risk ALL for the dream of something better even if that ‘something’ is only as basic as ‘freedom’.
Generations of people would give up everything just to die free. This is the entire base concept of the enslaved wanting to leave.
So what is life? I put to you that life without function is meaningless. Waking up, staring at wall, eat, wash, sleep, repeat is NOT LIFE. Yes, you have brain function, but what else?
Protecting lives is much much more than medical definitions.

That question must be put to all our fine helpers,just before we trot them off to “protective custody” in those lovely camps they have been building.
