    1. Had one and put a pontiac ram air 3 in it, drove it until the rear bumper rusted off. what a fool. If I had a magic ball I would be better off.

  1. I remember, not too many years ago, when you could get a used Porsche 928 or Ferrari 308 off ebay for around 5 grand.

    1. I remember when not too long ago , I could have bought a used Cessna 310d for about $12,000.
Granted it needed a shit ton of work, but the frame was undamaged and the motors were still running.
Although it needed a total overhaul, it would have made a decent profit just in parts alone.
      Oh well, decisions, decisions.

      1. John, old twins are generally not too popular due to the maintenance costs of two engines and propellers. Fuel consumption is also an issue: I am guessing it burns close to 20 USGPH, which is double what my Mooney uses. Granted the cruise speed is significantly higher, but it will still be relatively expensive to operate.

As you said, parting it out would have netted you a tidy profit – just for the engines and props.

All airplanes are appreciating in value. I have owned my Mooney for eight years and it has more than doubled in value. My ’65 T’Bird is also worth a lot more that I paid for it.

    2. YW, If I had kept all the cars I had that are now worth something I would need an aircraft hanger to store them.

  2. Any financial guys here have any idea what 30K invested in 1987 would get you?

Add cost of insurance and storage and maintenance.

Just not sure it’s a great deal.

Would be if at least he enjoyed the car with some miles on it.

    Still. Awesome car.

    1. “Would be if at least he enjoyed the car with some miles on it.”

Amen to that. Having a cool car and not driving it is like having a platonic relationship with a pr0n star.

      1. What? You don’t like just sitting with a girl and listening to most secret thoughts … for hours on end. Listening. Never speaking.

It’s like sitting in that car listening to the engine purr … but never slipping into first

    2. According to an online calculator that seems to check out correctly, $30K put into the S&P500 on Jan 1,1987 would, with dividends reinvested, be worth $1.1 million today.

      1. Amen. I’d happily settle for any ’64 to ’70 GTO. Maybe with a rag top in what they called Palmetto Green. Be still my heart.

    1. a 1970 Goat..??

      I’ll take a 67 400 RAM-AIR Tempest for 50k Alex….that and a replica Deep BLUE Shelby AC Cobra 327.
      My 2 Dream cars….

  3. I know it is a very special 87 Buick in a uniquely prefect condition and no aftermarket mods…
still I would greatly prefer an 87 E24 M6 over the GNX.

    1. Well F me.
I had about 5 of those crap boxes for parts cars.
Final one was a 2001 Suzuki Swift with the 1.3l 4 banger manny , last off the line, got for $ 200.
Still have the motor and tranny for that stuffed away.
They got very good gas mileage but their Achilles heel was rust to the front underpinnings that held the lower control arms in place.
If not attended to it would just collapse.
Bought them for peanuts, around $ 500 a pop and drove em into the ground and changed them like underwear.

        1. Mostly , when they fill with crap.
Much like the pResident Pantshitter In Chief.
What can I say, I’m getting old.

  4. I remember when everyone’s dad used to have a company car and my friend down the street had a Buick Grand National. My dad was so pissed because he could’ve got one under his company car deal but was stuck with a Crown Vic until the lease was up.

    1. Back in the 80’s, I lucked into a great gig with a major corp, including loaded company car, car phone and generous expense account, etc.. After I was there a few years, they upgraded the vehicle choices we had, and although a Chevy man, I would never be caught dead in a Lumina, so I went with the Ford Taurus for a couple years.(I was previously choosing the Tempo over the Corsica… another easy decision.)

Meanwhile, our western regional manager was not happy with the same vehicle that his “underlings” drove, so he tried to pull a fast one and ordered a loaded Caprice for his next vehicle. Well, top management got wind of this and contacted the dealer behind his back. When he picked up the car, it was indeed a Caprice, but virtually option-free. Crank windows, basic hubcaps, in the dark blue he ordered it, it looked almost exactly like an RCMP ghost car. It was hilarious. He was told later that they had phoned the dealer back to at least add air and cruise, after feeling a little guilty about their prank.

He normally drove his personal Olds to the office after that, reserving his cop car for highway business trips. This same manager told me that his first ever company car was a 70 Chevelle SS 396. Thanks for stirring those memories, james.

  5. I mean, who wouldn’t want a car the owner can maintain himself?

Fun fact: Trabants remained on east German roads for decades after unification because anybody with a basic toolkit could keep a Trabi running for a lifetime.

In the end, climate change was the excuse used to declare Trabis no longer road-worthy in Germany. The Trabis had to go, you see, because they no longer met emissions standards, and obviously not because they dented demand for newer “high-tech” lemons.

    1. “Fun fact: …”

Bullshit. Anyone who lived in Eastern Europe despised Trabant. They were the most hated communist cars. Only after the fall of communism they became cult symbols for idiots who romanticized them (tend to be the same idiots that romanticize Pootin thee days). East Germans made the worst passenger cars in a very bad lot. Skoda was the best or rather the least bad. Polish FIAT/FSO, Lada, Dacia, Yugo were all decades ahead of Trabant. Even East German Wartburg was better than Trabant (both had two stroke engines).

      1. Nobody said Trabis were the best cars on the market. I said they were easy for owners to service, which most modern cars are not.

I’d rather own a Trabi than a Tesla.

        1. They weren’t any easier to service than other com block cars, and were inferior to all the late 80s alternatives. As a matter of fact they were probably inferior to all late 70s com bloc alternatives (although they would be about as awful as Polish Syrena or the Zaporozhets). They didn’t disappear from the roads because some legislation, they disappeared from the roads because nobody wanted them except for hobbyists or collectors.
You know what disappeared upon unification? Every used car on every used car lot in the Western Germany.
I’d rather own Tesla than Trabant and I despise Tesla.

  6. That old high (1,100) miler GNX went cheap.
This ’87 GNX has only 759 miles on the odd and it’s already at US$200k :
    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1987-buick-grand-national-gnx-9/

The ideal car for those real men whose diminished-over-time testosterone levels preclude the ultimate enjoyment of 1987 Buick GNX’s, Bring-a-Trailer is offering up a geriatric friendly 560 SEC from MB:
    https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-mercedes-benz-560sec-23/
This is a real gentleman’s coupe, as the doors are so heavy that when parked uphill the fairer sex are unable to push open the door, and have to await the arrival of their stronger half.

Still dirt cheap as everyone fears the cost of ownership (yet $5000 down and $500 bi-weekly costs for a new LEDmobile is considered reasonable these days)

The biggest drawback circa 2021 is that the engine needs 91 octane fuel to feed all 8 cylinders, but YOLO.

    1. Hey, 560SECs were magnificent cars, although I would prefer an SL from the same era… or the legendary 500E

  7. Heh, came to this county on Friday Dec 13, 1968.
As a guy would do, went to check out the vehicles.
They had the most beautiful brand spanking new red mustang convertible for $4500 CAD, right down town Calgary.
Thought that kind of price I could work with, until I went to work for $2.00 an hour.
    Those were them days.

    1. Even in early 90s you could still get a full time minimum wage job for the summer and save enough for a beater to drive you to high school in style and panache only a teenager could appreciate, that also made your female friends eager to check out the backseat.

Kids have it rough these days, they don’t drive and they don’t have backseat fun. My ten year old 83 Accord was a love machine.

  8. Sold this week at $206,000. USD. Today’s USD gold price is $1845 / ounce … that’s 111.65x ounces gold

Sold originally at $29,290. USD. Then the USD gold price +/- was $475 / ounce … that’s 61.66x ounces gold

Blame the gov’t for debasing the currency, and continuing to grind it into lira…
It hasn’t been a bad investment as long as you don’t look at the opportunity cost of not buying Vancouver real estate, but far from other holdings with very low risk.
    Bitcoin, for example.

In the classified section of Road & Track magazine in 1970 there was a Ferrari GTO for sale at $8500.
A few years ago, one of these cars sold for just under $50 million. (I didn’t do the gold comparison here)

  9. Kind of like the flaky kid who won’t take his toys out of their packages.
I’d recommend a pallet of spare turbos if the buyer plans on driving it.

  10. Those GNs were more fearsome than the Corvettes of the day. I say that as the previous owner of an ’83 Capri RS (with T-tops) and an ’88 Mustang 5.0 Vert. On a good day, the ’88 could whip a Corvette, but never stood a chance against a GN. My present car is an ’06 Mustang GT, 170K on the clock with nothing but replacement of oil, filters, tires, brakes, bulbs, and a serpentine belt. [knocks wood]

    1. Rt

      06 Was a good year.
      I bought my 06 LBZ Duramax Feb 07…w/51k km’s.
Still driving it: 603,500 Kms later, New Turbo and Water pump only replacements…+ THE USUAL: Brakes, Filters & Fluids, shocks etc- cpl of (although I go 15-18 thou kms per oil change – have Large By pass Oil filter at 5mU).
Still on original Injectors, Fuel rails, CP3 injection pump…added a FASS bout 7 yrs ago among a shit ton of other mods over the years)

I expect it to outlast me….Best pce of Detroit Equip I have ever owned.

win a lottery…?? AC Shelby Cobra and RE-build the dirty max…then buy the wife some flowers….LOL (and a Porsche cheyanne)

      1. Of the dozens of cars I had, car poor as a young man, my 65 Mustang convertible was and remains my favorite car.

        1. awe, The PONYS were great VOWG….no question..!! I liked em too..!!
A chick Magnet on steroids….specially the convertible

    1. That was my first thought – no electronics whereby anybody can track you and/or remotely control your car “for your own safety”. Of course, if you carry your cellphone with you, half that protection goes right out the window,

  11. Got my 2011 Buick Regal CXL, as you all know an Opel Insignia made in Rüsselsheim am Main for the first year on the Canadian market, so a stealth Mercedes, for $8,700. In 33 years it should be worth. . .? Course, I’m 80, going on 81, so it doesn’t matter. Nice car though.

  12. If you read into the comments on the auction website, word is that Kourtney Kardashian bought the car for her boyfriend.
So any question as to whether the amount spent was reasonable goes out the window.

  13. my beat up 356 porsche convertable d would bring 90000 dol as is,,,over 200000 if properly restored.. my 66 fender jazz bass ..asking price on reverb ..over 10000 glad i held onto this stuff,,the bass is for sale bathtub is not

  14. I learned to drive on my dad’s 1965 Buick Wildcat 4-door sedan. It had a 455 V-8 and could leave rubber for half a block. I loved that car.
