A few years ago I attended a community sponsored conference for local volunteers . . . really the salt of the earth types who put in many hours to help in their communities. It included a modest boxed lunch ( stale sandwiches, actually), and participants were very pleased. I have also attended many government shindigs, where no expense was spared in making sure the bureaucrats were properly wined and dined. The contrast with the “honoring our local volunteers” event was shocking, and it told me something about our priorities as a society.
