They could use a simpler approach: nuclear batteries powering a Seebeck effect thermopile, just like what are used for spacecraft such as New Horizons and the Voyagers.
BAD – This list in Wikipedia clearly indicates that Russia and China are a way ahead of the pack in terms of constructing and operating SMRs globally. I think there are a number that are not on the list but the West is clearly playing catch up.

The small modular fusion reactor being ready for a pilot at MIT (with Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) company), now that the 20 Tesla magnet they needed has been tested and proven, is the antidote to that poison pill.

I don’t think the ‘batteries’ used on the voyagers and so on scale well – really low wattage per unit. Also these are based on Plutonium in their current iterations, and one of the basic criteria is to avoid putting isotopes out there that could be leveraged by bad actors or could be a significant concern in a terror attack on the reactor.

I can’t imagine how further along nuclear power would be if it developed at the same pace that we’ve seen with the advances of the internal combustion engine over the last 50 years. I remember an elementary school science teacher telling our class how in the near future every home would have a nuclear reactor in the basement. It would provide electric heat, hot water, electrical power and a mini version of this reactor would be in every car. Safety would be provided by encasing the reactor in plain tap water. This was almost 50 years ago. Sadly most of the eco-kooks still think nuclear will make everything glow green.

Quite right, Eskimo. That was the intent behind the Canadian development of the small fission pile Slowpoke developed by AECL starting in the late 1960s. It was to be a small reactor of a few hundred watt-hours capable of providing heat and electricity to a small city block. Naturally it was crushed by regulatory requirements. The reactors were only ever deployed as research reactors as neutron sources at half a dozen Canadian universities. The antinukes, fueled by the oil and gas industry, went ballistic after TMI in 1979. Never forget that the antinuclear industry was a deliberate creation of the oil and gas industry.

Communists? No, the antinuclear industry got its big start by millions of dollars in grants from Atlantic Richfield in the 1960s. It continues to get huge annual supports from a host of oil company trust funds such as the Rockefeller Foundation. The principal antinuclear organization in Ontario is the Ontario Clean Air Alliance, an organization supported financially by gas companies such as Enbridge.
The position of the oil and gas companies has been for the last half-century that nuclear constitutes an existential threat to their business. And they are right; nuclear power eliminated bunker oil as an electricity source by about 1990 on a global basis.

Same BS that the windmill folks use: 1MW divided by 1,000 homes gives you 1kW per home. That’s not even enough to boil a kettle, let alone run your washing, dishwasher, aircon, electric shower, etc. Maybe 1kW is the average load, but the lights go out when things aren’t average.
Not saying that mini-nukes are necessarily bad – just this claim is rubbish.
