Or, since I have a pair of old Motorola bag phones, which are analog cellular units, I could try one of those, though I don’t know if I can get those to receive battery power.

Sorry but your history lesson needs work. The Canadian/American First Special Service Force fought in Italy and Southern France before being disbanded. The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion did drops in Normandy on D-Day and over the Rhine plus other battles before doing a mad dash to Wismar on the Baltic to cut the Russians off from Denmark as the war ended.
