  1. The Mem Sahib is currently in England (flew out last week just after they lifted restrictions). All went very smoothly. We’ll have to see if she encounters problems when she comes back in a couple of weeks.

Luckily our #2 daughter is a lawyer (on Bay St, no less!) if things get bad.

    1. Yes, this is what happens when you elect an admirer of dictatorships…you get “dic-tater-ship”! 🙂

  2. Kenji The wife and I just had to fill out a detailed COVID questionnaire ahead of our trip to Hawaii later this month. Had to send them a jpg of our vaccination cards so we could avoid a quarantine and/or provide a negative COVID test within 72 hours of flying (by an approved testing agency).

Funny thing … I didn’t need to provide any of that nonsense when crossing into Nevada from CA. Oh well … Nevada doesn’t have anyone quite as “vigilant” as Maisey Hirono … who will probably STILL throw me into quarantine … because I’m a … man … and a likely “rapist” like Brett Kavanaugh

    1. Kenji. are you nuts. I would say fuck off I am not going. You have become an enabler.

    2. Enjoy your trip to Hawaii, Kenji, whichever island or islands you’re going to. My wife and I went to Oahu in 1989 and enjoyed it immensely. I hear Honolulu is pretty crowded now so I’m glad we went when we did.

  3. “We defeated fascism during World War 2, but Canada seems to be embracing it now.”
Oh please! Canada embraced fascism from the get go, it’s just we kid ourselves that it’s an honorable fascism. We even sent Jews to the camps.
Canadians voted Hitler lover a.nd chief eugenicist, Tommy Douglas, the greatest Canadian.
When didn’t Canadians worship at the altar of fascism? It’s in their character or I should say, lack of it either through ignorance or stupidity. I can forgive stupidity, but ignorance is a self inflicted wound, and worthy of derision.

“Beginning in 1942, the internment of Japanese Canadians occurred when over 22,000 Japanese Canadians—comprising over 90% of the total Japanese Canadian population—from British Columbia were forcibly relocated in the name of national security. The majority were born in Canada

I know, right. When your parents told you to be home by midnight they were fascists too.

If Canada was fascist from its beginning, as well as during WWII, then so is every country in the world. Supposedly Nixon, Reagan, Bush, Harper and Trump were all fascists. Fascism is a word that’s been used by so many shallow thinkers it’s become meaningless, but you are attempting a new depth of absurdity.

      1. @Greg Grandy The handling of the epidemic by Trudeau, and countless others all over the world, whether elected or unelected, has been authoritarian and senseless. Having power others seems to be a motivator for many political leaders. But to take from this dictatorial and fascistic behaviour, the idea that Canada has been a fascist country from the beginning is nonsense. Which countries do you think are non-fascist then? Name them.

        1. It isn’t about other countries.
It’s about this one. The one that put Ukrainian Canadians in concentration camps as well as Japanese.. At what point do people
like you stop patting yourself on the back and take a good hard look at the world around you.
That’s a hundred years of putting people in camps.

          1. @Greg Gandy “Canada embraced fascism from the get go…When didn’t Canadians worship at the altar of fascism? It’s in their character…”

            “It isn’t about other countries.”

Those weasel words are the best you can do? Goodbye.

      2. What’s absurd is people defending a country that put is citizens in concentration camps (during both world wars, sent jews back to die in the camps, and currently runs an apartheid system for a sizable portion of it’s population.
But wear that “I’m Canadian” label with pride, looks good on you.

    2. Canada has been on that march for decades now, yet people are unable to see it as they embrace it.

      1. Greg Gandy’s a shithead. Every combatant in the First World War interned any citizens of enemy powers that they found on their territory on the outbreak of war. They were held in internment, not in concentration camps. No Ukrainian was interned in Canada unless he was an Austrian or German immigrant; immigrants from Russia went untouched. The concern was divided or misplaced loyalty.

In the second war, the Japanese in British Columbia gave every reason to believe they were loyal to Japan before Canada. Yes, it went badly for them, probably worse than they deserved. But it was a time when most powers in the world dealt with people they didn’t like by literally burning them alive. So maybe the Japanese in Canada got off lightly.

        1. @ebt I made the mistake of replying to him today but never again. For some warped reason he hates Canada and Canadians — fascist monsters all of them from Confederation day onward — and he can wallow in it for all I care.

Are you the the ebt who used to contribute and comment here 10 or so years ago or have I gotten someone else’s pseudonym mixed up with yours?.

          1. Possibly both. I’ve followed this site for donkey’s years, and occasionally comment, but I’ve also been frequently confused with at least two other long-timers with similar names.

    1. Liz, you don’t beat them they will beat you, physically. I have no idea why people are unable to see this.

      1. Trouble is we vote for it at a time when we never had more sources of information in our history.
We seem to be unable to see beyond the bullshit, just accept it and complain but do nothing.
Don’t believe for a second manipulation by media is not a very big threat to our democracy too.

        1. Liz, get a gun.
A shotgun for hunting is great for close quarter encounters.
Learn how to use it and practice, practice, practice.
          It is the great Equalizer.
Failing that get in on some self defense classes.
You will slept better at night.

  4. I worry the election is already fixed. People keep saying we have a good election system and it can’t happen here but I keep thinking about how no one seemed to like Biden and yet he was elected anyway. I can’t recall Canadians being so upset since we brought the Conservative party down to two seats after Mulroney. Yet, I am really afraid the election fix will happen here and the dictator will remain in charge.

  5. We do have a weapon. Talk to people and do not be afraid to. It is surprising (perhaps not) how many people believe what they see on TV. I guess it is all they see. I find that when I talk to people about what is happening with CoVid. the direction of our country, the silly men running our country and economic issues facing those of us who still create wealth (feed the tax revenues with real dollars) they begin to listen. Do not be afraid of your beliefs. Speak them. They do and right now they are winning. It is time to speak out.
