    1. The biggest tokamak fusion project right now is the ITER. Work on it has been in progress for 10 or 15 years and it likely won’t be running until the end of this decade. It’s still uncertain whether it will properly demonstrate the feasibility of nuclear fusion as a means of generating electrical power.

      I tend to agree with one comment that I heard about it, namely that it will fall short of its projected goals but it will result in some interesting physics. In other words, it’s a rather elaborate and expensive scientific experiment.

      One of the problems with this approach is the neutron flux resulting from the nuclear reactions. The neutrons will be adsorbed (note the spelling) by the reactor vessel, which will eventually have to be replaced or risk failing by spalling. Until that problem is properly addressed, that method of fusion will not be commercially feasible.

      Tokamaks aren’t the only geometry that are under consideration, though, being a torus, is one of the simpler ones. The stellerator, which looks like a warped doughnut, is one of the other ones being investigated.

      Personally, I think an aneutronic reaction process would be far cheaper and simpler.

      1. BAD – as I alluded to earlier, MIT has a research agreement with startup company Commonwealth Fusion Systems to develop a next-generation fusion research experiment, called SPARC. It’s a Tokamak reactor but since it is partially free-enterprise funded I expect that it’s 2025 construction deadline is more likely than ITER France’s 2035 date. Commonwealth is using a of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) tape, a newly available class of superconducting material that supported creating higher magnetic fields for effectively confining the plasma. It had the potential to surpass the performance of the previous generation of superconductors, like niobium-tin, which was being used in ITER, the burning plasma fusion experiment being built in France.

        I think MIT and Commonwealth may be on the way to a game changer result.

          We’ve been hearing all sorts of pie-in-the-sky claims about higher temperature semiconductors since the mid-1980s but few of them amounted to anything except as funding magnets.

        1. That’s one reason I find the fusor so intriguing. What Dr. Bussard’s group accomplished was done with a small fraction of what ITER will finally cost.

          As I recall, they received much of their funding from the U. S. Navy. That was cut due to the war in Iraq as fusion research wasn’t regarded as high-priority.

    1. Keep in mind that these weren’t intended for commecial and/or civilian use. Making them available to the public, depending on the conditions under which they were released, is often a way of recouping the development costs.
