Weiss, who quit in July of 2020, before the vaccines and the economic recovery, did everything we’re taught not to do when leaving a job.
In her open letter, Weiss slammed the Times for everything from ideological groupthink and pandering to Twitter to tolerating an internal culture of bullying.
The Times did not respond to emails seeking comment.But here’s the twist. In today’s upside-down media world, where corporate media bows to ‘social’ media and to be interesting is to be ‘canceled,’ Weiss ended up on top.
A year on, Weiss has a podcast and a newsletter on Substack, the growing independent media platform now hosting the likes of Matt Taibbi, Glenn Greenwald, Andrew Sullivan and Matt Yglesias. She has been making waves. A recent newsletter and podcast is taking another look at the case of the so-called Central Park Karen, the New York dogwalker caught up in a racism row last year.
As her own boss, Weiss is already making way more money than she did working for The Man.

Nobody would give a shit about Lindsey Shepherd if she weren’t young and cute. Worse things happen to male students in STEM fields every day.
Owens is a con-woman who produces nothing of value but panders to US conservatives and tells them what they want to hear. She does nothing of value.
I don’t know much of anything about Weiss but doesn’t she purport to do reporting and opinion writing? Not sure her audience is conservative or liberal. I wouldn’t pay for it but she has a customer base.
The bigger point is less about her and more that if you are a creative type you no longer need to work for big corporations and can make as much or more money on your own.
Greenwald, and Taibbi; they never changed. They are true believers, they haven’t changed. They believe in free speech, and a free press, and a a way that the press should behave. On these things, they will not compromise.
As humans, they make mistakes. They were against Trump. BUT, they are capable of admitting mistakes. This Barry Weiss character; I am pretty sure she is a true believer in communism. That is her deeply held belief, the thing she will not compromise on.
Politics follows culture. Every voice helps.
I’ve had my reservations about Weiss and other liberals who ‘saw the light’ but one way or another they are reaching people with a conservative message. Hell, Thomas Sowell was a Marxist initially.
And money talks.
I used to buy thousands of dollars of stuff per year from Amazon, now all I buy from them are conservative books.

I used to order the annual edition of a certain radio publication from a local bookseller in my end of the city. They were OK at first but, eventually, they did a lousy job in getting that book for me each year. Had I ordered something like Heather Has 2 Mommies, I might have had the next day. Yeah, it was one of those establishments.
I got better service from Amazon. I find the page for it, click on the link to order, and it’s done. No fuss, no aggravation. I’ve done that for several years and I’ve yet to have a problem.

This is the crux of the matter.
If you are not willing to crawl across broken glass to make your point; you lose.
Amazon killed Parler; an actual direct attack on free speech. When convenience matters more, you lose. That simple.
In a war, the winner is decided by who has the stronger will. Who will march farther, climb more walls, sleep less, eat less, whatever it takes TO WIN. You win a war, when you break the will of the other side to fight. When you convince them that you will never quit.
With respect to bookstores or, for that matter, any business, if one is serious about getting and keeping my custom, it has to offer me something that the competition doesn’t.
Start with faster, better, cheaper, along with the standard West Point cadet responses when given an order:

“I do not understand, sir.”
“No excuse, sir.”
Any outfit that does that will be of interest to me.

Weiss is kind of a mixed bag – I don’t know how any reasonable human being with critical thinking skills could actually believe Blasey Ford and her allegations against Supreme Court nominee Bret Kavanaugh but Bari sure did.
And her assertion on Rogan’s podcast that Tulsi Gabbard was an Assad “toady” without knowing what the word “toady” meant only illustrates that she was following the left wing narrative for that particular time which kind of makes her, well, a “toady”.
So she’s found fame and fortune on substack and podcasting…good for her. But she shouldn’t forget…it’s the message that sells, not her. I’d say judging from her topics she’s playing it down the middle with a slight right wing shade.
Start hitting the ball into left field she can watch her life crumble Air America style.
Great comment Burton – I really only became aware of her writings once she left the NYT (and became an immediate fan of her resignation letter). Although her history showed a left-leaning bent, it appears she was willing to listen to all opinions. I think somewhat the same of Megan Kelly (although I think she now leans to the right).
She comes from that remarkable group that is somehow able to de-identify itself from being white whenever it suits their purposes.

If you’re Canadian forget it. There’s no way to commodify new media.
If you are a creative talent you are better in your own than working for a company. Writers, artists, comic books, etc. have all gone out on their own and made more money, plus, they own all their product and can continue to monetize it. Catch is you have to create something that people want and you have to build your own audience/customer base. But it’s the way to go.

The MSM wants a monopoly not just on news delivery but on journalists. They don’t like that the more interesting journalists now have options, and MSM can no longer dictate how journalists must think and behave.

It is like the police officers, whom the mayor of Seattle defunded. Then she reassigned them to her personal security detail.
And they are “just following orders”.
It is illustrative of an entire category of behavior. The mafia can continue to operate, because they foster a certain level of tolerance in the civilian operation. Tolerance by itself, is not enough though. Tolerance, won’t stop someone who sees their neighbor’s car being stolen from calling the cops. Now you need fear, or love. Both if you can manage it; fear is safer if one must choose.
But, you cannot push the fear too hard. Push too hard, and people start to realize they have nothing to lose. Once people have nothing to lose, the game changes.
So there is line that cannot be crossed. The line is way further than I thought, judging by what people have put up with for 2 years here.
