Blacklocks (paywalled) – Gov’t Will Regulate YouTube
The Commons heritage committee has voted to regulate YouTube under federal law. The Department of Heritage said YouTube management, not individual users, will be liable for complying with the Broadcasting Act: “The only reason the government is doing this is to stretch the justification of regulating public airwaves into a justification for regulating private viewing.”
They’ve done this because the head of the CRTC, Ian Scott, CEO, demanded the right to regulate all forms of transmission. Thing is, they can do it when radio spectrum must be controlled as there is a limited supply and to use it requires a large, fixed, transmitter. Not so for Netflix, Youtube, etc. We’ll see how the battle goes. There will be three sides, Netflix/Youtube etc., the governmnet and Canadians.
This coming along with a movement by the government to take their money; but that will probably end up in symbolic payments as long as they do the government’s censoring.
Sounds about right.
I guess getting a US based VPN service will now become essential. I’m sure Oh Tool is lining up to congratulate Trudeau on his bold plans.
The only thing one needs to do to get government to act is to tell them they are missing out on a cut of the action.
You can make every logical argument that something is good or bad and it will be sent to committee for debate if at all, and promptly shoved down the memory hole.
But hint even remotely how much revenue the government is losing and the entirety of government (executive, legislative and judicial) all jump into action.
Same story different day.
Government cares not a whiff about content, censorship, access, or quality.
They see money being made online, and they didn’t get a cut.
Meh…You Tube is a joke as is much of the “old school” Social Media.
Brighteon, Rumble and Bit Chute are worthy of looking at in my opinion.
and yea, been using a VPN for years.
Regardless what the Govt Trough feeders do, INFORMATION will move about freely, be it electronically or on a pce of paper.
Thank goodness we have Jason “firewall” Kenney protecting Alberta from this madness! (sarc/off)
Hoping everyone is paying attention to which people are ok with this.
When Canadians search for “4 June 1989” will they discover it’s the day after 3 June 1989 and has nothing to do with what the #Librano’s favored gov’t of China did to those in Tiananmen Square who “did not agree” … or will they be directed to how the Liberal Gov’t of Canada instructed the Halifax International Security Forum to not give their 2021 award to Taiwan’s President?
Do we NEED to know?
Strange, I didn’t see anything about this in the bought and paid for media.
Netflix / Youtube and other Big Tech will happily self-censor, geoblock, and otherwise cave to any government which asks them to. They are not a third group in this fight. They are one and the same as government and those two will be the only seats at the table when the deal is done.
Can’t think of a better way to kill off YouTube and make it unwatchable than by imposing CRTC regulations.
Hopefully this will trigger the youth vote to perceive there is a problem with big intrusive governments
Say goodbye to any conservative, anti-Liberal or anti-Trudeau videos.
Like I said earlier, soon China will admire Canada’s basic dictatorship.
What could possibly go wrong?
Everybody loves the Hallmark Channel and all the unwatched Canadian-made “movies” with D-List Hollywood “stars” that fill it’s schedule. Why not do the same to Youtube and Spotify? How dare Canadians watch what they want to watch, when they want to watch it. The news “media” have already been suitably neutered. Why should Canadians expect to have a right to dare question what is being said to them and what is being forced upon them? Our Liberal masters have our best interests in mind and will make sure we get what we need, good and hard. Everything is under (their) control and will become increasingly so. God bless Justin and his wonderful socks!
Are they going to make VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) illegal too?
That would be very difficult.
Every large Canadian corporation, with their employees working remotely, utilize VPNs.
That won’t fly, but it won’t stop the LIEBrawl meatheads from trying it, then looking stupid afterwards, as usual.
Can’t they force cancon onto us for our own apparent good?
It worked so well 50 years ago, didn’t it?
