Investigators are struggling to build a federal murder case regarding fallen US Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, vexed by a lack of evidence that could prove someone caused his death as he defended the Capitol during last month’s insurrection.
Authorities have reviewed video and photographs that show Sicknick engaging with rioters amid the siege but have yet to identify a moment in which he suffered his fatal injuries, law enforcement officials familiar with the matter said.

Sicknick will lie in honor at the Capitol beginning Tuesday evening, Congressional leaders announced late last week, bestowing on him a sacred tribute that’s typically reserved for dead American political leaders.
In Sicknick’s case, it’s still not known publicly what caused him to collapse the night of the insurrection. Findings from a medical examiner’s review have not yet been released and authorities have not made any announcements about that ongoing process.
According to one law enforcement official, medical examiners did not find signs that the officer sustained any blunt force trauma, so investigators believe that early reports that he was fatally struck by a fire extinguisher are not true.

The media has tried very hard to tie Ofcr. Sicknick’s death to an assault, even some claims that he was beaten to death with a fire extinguisher. My understanding is that he died of a stroke, but maybe they’re trying to tie the stroke to something else, like a TBI, and the autopsy is inconclusive. I don’t see how they can proceed without an autopsy finding. They do appear to be manufacturing a case. Needless to say, I know there were only a few bad actors among the demonstrators and I’m all for identifying, thoroughly vetting, and prosecuting them.
I initially took the word of Brian Sicknick’s brother who had conversed with his brother before he died and he was unaware that his brother had been physically assaulted.
All that said, I have seen video of a couple of male demonstrators physically beating on capital police on the capitol steps when they pushed over the barricades. I have also seen a demonstrator tossing a fire extinguisher from a terrace on officers below, who do appear to be helmeted. The fire extinguisher story may have been a completely separate event, but you know how our sloppy media likes to conflate stories. Anyway, I can’t believe that they don’t have sufficient surveillance video between security and media. Maybe tracking a perpetrator through a crowd isn’t as easy as it appears on TV.
