I spent a lot of years as a journalist (not mainstream media). But I was not trained as a journalist, i.e., in journalism school. That used to be the norm, in fact, even for reporters and editors at the big city newspapers. My background and education (and reading!) was/is much broader. I question much of what journalism schools are teaching, but an additional problem is the extremely narrow experience level, and general lack of broad reading in so many current “journalists.” Most of them know almost nothing about almost everything.
