Blog Notes

Many thanks to Robert, David and Terry for filling in during my road trip to Washington/Oregon over the past couple of weeks. I’m back and regular blogging should resume after some sleep.

In the meanwhile, here are a couple of scenic shots taken yesterday. Enjoy!

  1. Brr. At least there were a few caribou between you and the north pole to slow the wind down.

    God bless, and stay warm!

    1. I am sure i will be mocked here, but why the lack of trees on the land there.. I was recently in Saskatoon and just outside of the city proper it seems so bleak…

      1. Not enough CO2. Not like millennia passed (between glacial events). The trees can’t “breath” enough to survive the harsh climate.

  2. Lovely shots! We already have more snow than we had in the last two years combined. Florida is starting to sound like a very nice destination.

    1. Yup. I drove through country like that in winter lots of times and under similar circumstances.

One thing I learned for long-distance winter driving is that it’s a good idea to have a sleeping bag in the vehicle. If one ever ends up in the ditch, and there isn’t a lot of traffic on the road, at least one has a chance of staying warm until someone stops to help.

      1. “for long-distance winter driving……it’s a good idea to have a sleeping bag in the vehicle”

        And flares, a flashlight, food, H2O, a pillow, hand warmers/gloves, a shovel.

Gave a presentation on this once, no one even had flares in their car etc.

        1. Flares won’t do any good on some of the back roads I’ve driven. There weren’t too many people there. A radio, however, would be much more useful, which is one reason I always take a handheld ham transceiver with me.

          1. “handheld ham transceiver”…yes, good to have…

Flashlight better, rather than candles, imo.

When I once rescued a couple and their child who ditched, they had left the inside light on in the car till somebody came along. Good idea but not for long.

  3. Welcome back Kate.

It feels good knowing Greta Thunberg is running out of time, she only has 9 years left.

‘Greta Thunberg says world leaders are running out of time to tackle climate emergency.’

    1. That’s okay – nine years from now she gets to complain that we only have nine more.

      Welcome back Kate!

  4. Welcome back Kate
Ya musta been heading north on the first pic…? drifitiing snow across the rd..?
The thing that always gets me driving these roads is the lack of colour…an little to define the horizon.

Good call from BA on sleeping bag…totally. That, a full tank of fuel, and (liquid) water, snacks and a few candles along with a Cell phone that actually has range.

    1. Also, once in the ditch, stay with the vehicle. If nothing else, it can provide shelter. Unless one happens to be in distress right beside a habitation, it’s safer to stay there.

Many years ago, I gave a lift to someone when their vehicle conked out along the highway. It was dark and the temperature was nearly -40 C. The driver noticed a farm house with the lights on….. across an open field…. at least 1 km away. My comment was that if that person had tried to walk there and something had happened, say tripping and falling with possible injury, nobody would have noticed until what’s left of them was found the following spring during planting.

      1. We had that happen couple years ago where a girl got stuck. Coyotes found her body before the searchers did. She walked in exactly the wrong direction. The other 3 ways she would have come to a farms house within half a mile.

  5. Kate what did you see on your trip? I heard from someone this week that in Philadelphia there are already Trump 2020 bumper stickers. This is significant because liberal city, last time folks flew under radar with signage because of risk and people in the States generally don’t put stuff up until Fall of the election year.

    1. I saw road, the inside of the Western Washington Fairgrounds, the Portland Expo building, a few hotel rooms and not much else. 😉 The real world pretty much fails to penetrate.

      1. Is there a noticeable difference being in Trump country as opposed to our socialist paradise?.. Although I guess Washington and Oregon aren’t really Trump Country.

      2. Driving in upstate New York this summer I saw Trump 2020 lawnsigns on peoples lawns everywhere.

    1. Let me tell you about the 50mph elk evasion maneuver I performed on the Crowsnest HWY at 4am Monday…

  6. Taking photos while driving on crappy roads is one of her minor sins. By the way, drinking a coffee or eating a sandwich while driving should be in the same category as tuning the radio or adjusting the temperature. I have a feeling that maybe its time to sell S G I if they are influencing the laws.

    1. spike, I have taken pictures like that going around the Gaspe on business in April, through the windshield. Being more than smart and intelligent is a necessity. By the way, the snow in April was more than equal.
