Back in the day there were a lot of western swing bands. Bob Wills was popular but so was Spade Cooley. Spade was a Roy Roger’s look-a-like – I think he might have been a stand in for Roy in some RR movies.
Spade’s wife had an affair with Roy and Spade in a career ending move killed her. He was convicted of murder one.
Western Swing survives to this day. Asleep at the Wheel is the band but there are many Texas swing bands active in the south west where people still dance with one another.

Nelson the sheepdog is hilarious. This is a story about sheep from my Dad when he was a boy. My Granddad had a neighbor with sheep. Maybe about 100 sheep. Anyway he would not fix the fence he shared with Granddad, and his sheep always got into Granddad’s crop every year. Granddad offered to help with the fence every spring. This one spring Granddad had enough.
This time my Granddad and my Dad drove the sheep out of the crop and up into the barnyard and into the barn. Granddad told my Dad, go to your Mother and get that old suit coat of mine that I never wear. Which he did. They held down one of the sheep and put the suit coat on one of the sheep and laced it on with binder twine.
Grandfather then told my Dad to open all the gates to the county road and drive the sheep onto the road and close the gate.
Well sheep are curious creatures. They like to stay together but they are afraid of anything unusual. The sheep with the coat wanted to stay with it’s sheep friends.
The flock did not like the strange sheep with the old suit coat and kept running away. It kept chasing. They chased each other over a couple of townships.
After many weeks the neighbor finally rounded up all the sheep with a great deal of effort and came to my Granddad and apologized for the grief he had caused.
And said I would like to fix the fence now. He had learned the error of his ways and his lesson about being a good neighbor without any fisticuffs or lawyers.

Nelson the sheepdog is hilarious. This is a story about sheep from my Dad when he was a boy. My Granddad had a neighbor with sheep. Maybe about 100 sheep. Anyway he would not fix the fence he shared with Granddad, and his sheep always got into Granddad’s crop every year. Granddad offered to help with the fence every spring. This one spring Granddad had enough.
This time my Granddad and my Dad drove the sheep out of the crop and up into the barnyard and into the barn. Granddad told my Dad, go to your Mother and get that old suit coat of mine that I never wear. Which he did. They held down one of the sheep and put the suit coat on one of the sheep and laced it on with binder twine.
Grandfather then told my Dad to open all the gates to the county road and drive the sheep onto the road and close the gate.
Well sheep are curious creatures. They like to stay together but they are afraid of anything unusual. The sheep with the coat wanted to stay with it’s sheep friends.
The flock did not like the strange sheep with the old suit coat and kept running away. It kept chasing. They chased each other over a couple of townships.
After many weeks the neighbor finally rounded up all the sheep with a great deal of effort and came to my Granddad and apologized for the grief he had caused.
And said I would like to fix the fence now. He had learned the error of his ways and his lesson about being a good neighbor without any fisticuffs or lawyers.
File under Beware of shrewd old farmers or such.
Good stuff, lesson learned.

I heard another good farmer tale. The old bromide goes, “A town too small for one lawyer is big enough for two.”
These two farmers were at loggerheads, and one decided he’d had enough and he was going to sue. So he went to the one town lawyer, who told him “I’m sorry, but your neighbour has already been to see me and I’m representing him. I’ll write you a letter to my colleague”, which the lawyer did. He handed it to the farmer; “Now I’ve marked this letter “Private and Confidential”; it pertains to the case and is for his eyes only; you are forbidden to read it, just take it to him.”
So the farmer set-out to the other lawyer, but his hackles were raising. Who is this lawyer to tell him what he can or can’t read, especially in a matter that’s likely going to cost him a lot of money? So he opened the letter, which read:

With letter in hand, the farmer went to visit his neighbour. They patched-up their differences. An “out-of-court settlement”, you might say.
