      The flick didn’t get much publicity and, I suspect, was restricted to art house cinemas. I only knew of its existence when I saw a poster for it in the lobby of a shoe-box cinema I was in. A few years later, it was shown on PBS and I haven’t seen it since.

    The “decision” on prorogation by the “U.K. Supreme Court” is appallingly illegal on its face (immodest disclosure: I knew this the moment I saw the coverage): it’s so bad that it’s even worse than judicial review in Canada, where at least the advent of that monstrosity was agreed, by a modicum of rules, by the Parliament of Canada, nine provinces, the Parliament of the United Kingdom and Her Majesty the Queen. This “decision” is nothing but a judicial coup d’état based on absolutely no authority or agreement.

    1. If Johnson wins a majority he must straighten out the UK Supreme Court or abolish it. I say abolish it. The whole point is that the people rule though Parliament and Parliament is supreme. At all times if Parliament is unhappy with the government they can call an election and let the people decide not hack political judges. And while Johnson is getting rid of the Supreme Court, he should go back to requiring the government to maintain the confidence of the House. It is ridiculous for Parliament to stifle a government by passing rogue legislation but not allowing them to call an election. It is a recipe for disaster.

    2. I did a quick read of the Canadian Supreme Court…..That creation was questioned & debated @ the time by all. They inserted a “Not Withstanding” clause to prevent judicial supremacy over the peoples parliament.. It is not clear who or how a blow to the head’s of the SCC is initiated.. Most likely the PM has the power, but maybe any elected Provincial Premier has rights….Old Diefenbaker wanted a Supreme court the was overseen by The House of Lords (UK)….Confusing yes!

    didn’t realize many of my fav tunes started out in that genre. does that make me a country fan?

          1. I admit that I liked his series The Civil War as well, in addition to his history of radio Empire of the Air.

            However, his previous documentary destroyed much of his credibility with me. It was not the definitive work on the subject as the network advertised it as being. The PBS series from the early 1980s based on Stanley Karnow’s book was far better, particularly since it included interviews of many of the high-level participants from both sides.

            As for the evolution of one musical form from another, that’s not unusual. Many classical composers based their works on common folk tunes. For example, there are numerous compositions that are on La Folia d’Espagna, such as Handel’s Sarabande. Then compare Une Jeune Fillette and The Huron Carol. (Marc Antoine Charpentier also used that tune in a section of his Messe de Minuit.) None other than J. S. Bach did the same thing.

    2. Yes, it is a nice overview with an unnecessary emphasis of “social change” … like linking Loretta Lynn to the feminist movement. Utter rubbish. She’s simply a REAL woman who grew up rough, and was tough as nails. She … herself … is reflected in her music, not some national social movement. PS … she didn’t/doesn’t HATE men. Just some LOSER men, who are to be avoided.

Replace Christmas Cheer drives, and instead have the government provide presents under the Peoplekind tree for the children. Think of the great photos for the Toronto Star, as Blackie dressed in a Santa outfit puts taxpayer funded gifts under the tree. He loves to dress up.

  20. I just finished watching Blackie give his speech in front of university students in Mississauga. He started off of course ranting about Hitler Ford, Hitler Scheer, Hitler Harper, and Hitler Jason Kenney. In fact most of his speech was a rant about Ford, Scheer, Harper, and Kenney. The bottom line is that he will be adding OVER NINE BILLION DOLLARS TO THE DEFICIT NEXT YEAR, for a grand total of OVER TWENTY SEVEN BILLION DOLLARS FOR ONE YEAR. With no goals or plans to reduce it. Endless deficits forever. AND EVERYTHING WILL BE FREE! And as reporters pointed out to him, he left out the cost of three or four big ticket items to his deficit proposals. When the Unifor journalists started asking him questions about the deficit or anything else, he wouldn’t answer the questions but ranted about Harper and Ford. Although he did mention that our credit rating is still good, so borrowing more money is not a problem.

    In the last regular season game which is absolutely meaningless, the Dodgers had an eight (count ’em) pitcher, three hit shutout. Five of the pitchers had started real games during the season. The starting pitcher didn’t go five innings, so the next pitcher, who inherited a 5-0 advantage, pitched one inning and got the win.
