RIP Ken (Kulak)

It’s with considerable sadness that I must pass along the news that one of SDA’s own passed away on the morning of July 22nd of a heart attack.

Ken (Kulak) was a  supporter, a frequent and thoughtful commentor, and a friend.

We shall miss him, and we send  our deepest condolences to Ken’s  family in Waldheim, SK.

  1. All the comments from so many say so much about Ken’s influence. Cheers to an honest man.

  2. Sad news. I found his comments a fine mixture of common sense and insight.
    RIP, Mr. K.

  3. My sense of deflation is palpable on this news: yesterday was such a great day for our cause — and then this information.

Why, just the other day, I was having a(nother) conversation with Ken and others on a difficult subject, which conversation showed Ken at his best (why was I not surprised?): practical, but always informed by his family’s experience of our enemies’ behaviour and predilections.

    I miss him already.

  4. Thanks for that link, gellen. Although I have never visited Waldheim, I knew of 2 families who attended the Mennonite Brethren Church in Waldheim from my time many years ago when I was living in Saskatoon. I echo the thoughts of many that Ken’s comments displayed intelligence, thoughtfulness, wisdom, and an unusual level of civility.

To Ken’s family: May God give you comfort at this time as well as confidence in the hope of the Resurrection on the Last Day through the finished work of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the summer of 2015 our hostess, Kate, was kind enough to create a thread to support a fundraiser for our daughter. Shortly afterwards, at the age of 24 years due to cancer, she left this life. Two songs of Christian faith have been a blessing and a comfort to me in the time since.

  5. Condolences to Ken (Kulak)’s family, and God bless them.

Thank you, Ken, for your decency and wisdom.

    Rest In Peace.

  6. Damn. One of those fellows in my “I’d really like to meet that guy someday” file.

  7. RIP, Ken (Kulak).

Like many others here, I feel that I have lost a friend that I never had the chance to meet.

I hope those he left behind have a chance to visit this thread and see for themselves how many lives Kenneth touched. I will miss his timely history lessons and the level of decorum and class he was always able to display here.

My deepest and sincerest condolences to his friends and family. What an utterly sad time.

Thanks gellen for letting me put a face to his handle.

  8. I can do nothing but echo many of the comments here. Ken was a class act – a thoughtful man and a real gentleman. I, too, will miss him.

  9. That’s terrible news. I always enjoyed Ken’s comments on SDA. My deepest condolences to his family.

  10. As I push further into senior world I see life as more precious every day. All life! … er … well most life..

I didn’t know Ken, but did read many of his comments. So sorry see a good man go. We need all the Saskatchewanians we can get. Much like Newfoundlanders, I never met one I didn’t like.

    RIP

  11. Nothing more to add that others haven’t already said. His comments were always worth reading, and would usually make you think. A big loss to this corner of the Internet, and my condolences go out to his family and all who knew him.

  12. RIP Ken, So sorry to hear this news. Like many here I never met Ken but always read his posts with interest. Great respect for his perspective and the scope of his reflections. I cannot help but fear that Ken is/was of an era that is passing. If our society no longer has these voices that talk of an era when unspeakable abuses were the norm then where will we be?

Ken was a master at solid reflection and pointed questions. He will be sadly missed.

  13. Shocked and saddened to hear of Ken (Kulak)’s death.
Amazing to consider what a friend Ken became to so many here in the SDA community due solely to his crystal clear and on point comments. I cannot recall a single comment with which I was not 100% in agreement.

Like most here, I did not meet or speak to Ken. In fact I’m a bit puzzled as to how people got to talk to and/or meet him.

Clearly a thoroughly grounded, good and decent man. As many have observed, he was uncommonly civil and polite. Sadly these qualities don’t cut it in the modern world. The great Jordan Peterson, whom Ken admired, tells us as much: not to be too polite.

On a lighter note, I did get quite a chuckle out of one of Ken’s out-of-character (?) outburts when he more or less asked a rude commenter, critical of him, to “step outside”.

  14. We shared a similar background (russia).
Kulak never forgot where he came from and the evil it represented.
While we disagreed from time to time he conducted himself with honour.
You had a good run sir.

    1. Sadly Ken has passed. Condolences made to family in earlier post by yours truly. Just to let you know my last exchange with Ken on
July 21st Readers’ Tips, we wrote about the weather and we mentioned you, abtrapperdude.

  15. So sorry, so sad. Only knew from SDA, but always enjoyed his comments, especially his perspective on actual history.
God bless his family and friends in the difficult time.

  16. RIP to Ken, who continued much to this fine web site. My prayers go out to his family and friends.

  17. Saddened to read about a major loss to our team of commenters. He will be sorely missed.

  18. He will be missed.
    Deepest sympathy to his family.
    Many thanks to Gellen.

  19. I’m sorry to hear about Ken. My condolences to his family and friends.

  20. Condolences to all who sense the greatness of this loss.
Prayers for God’s peace for Ken and God’s strength for his family in this difficult time.
    “One of SDA’s own.”
    Indeed.
    He was a fine example.

  21. I’m grateful for Ken’s solid and intelligent contributions to SDA. He was a man of quality, who understood the perils of communist rule. We were fortunate to have him in our midst. RIP, Ken. My condolences to his family.

  22. RIP Ken. I never met him but we seemed to be kindred spirits knowing the face of tyranny for what it is and whence it cometh. His contribution will be missed.

  23. A good man. Thank you, Lord, for sharing him with us. I enjoyed the times our interests and comments met, I always learned something.

  24. I have known Ken for over 60 years and learned about many insignificant historical facts
People at SDA should consider themselves very fortunate
Ken always had 3 versions of a story ,the long ,the short and the SDA version
I usually lived through the long ones
    I will miss them

      RIP Ken

      From SDA

From ashes to ashes, from dust to dust.
You’ll rise again, in this I’ll trust.

You’re in our hearts, ’till the end.

We will meet again, depart my friend.
You may be gone, but I know you’re near.
In my heart, I hold you dear.

My only hope, in peace you’ll rest.

      I’ll see you soon, it’s a must.

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust.
