A brown paper bag just doesn’t buy what it used to.
Ottawa’s $2.1-billion light rail system, supposed to be finished by the end of this month, will not only miss its third completion deadline but is experiencing issues far more serious than city officials have led the public to believe, according to internal reports obtained by CBC.
The reports from the city’s rail operations show a litany of issues with the Confederation Line — the east-west system being built by the SNC Lavalin-led Rideau Transit Group — especially when it comes to the system’s ability to handle Ottawa winters.
“Vehicles are currently unreliable to the point that it has not been demonstrated that operations can be sustained during a winter weather event,” according to one report from last week.
The reports say that “panels are coming loose and breaking on LRVs [light-rail vehicles] due to snow building up on the vehicles,” and that snow and ice are “frequently causing the doors to freeze shut.”
Both brakes and bogies — the underframe of the rail car that holds the wheels — also freeze up if the vehicles “sit for any amount of time” outdoors during a snowfall.

People’s Party Leader Maxime Bernier wants less federal government, more pipelines, fewer immigrants
Maxime Bernier left the Conservative Party of Canada last August to sit as an independent MP and launch a new federal party, the People’s Party of Canada.
Maxime Bernier left the Conservative Party of Canada last August to sit as an independent MP and launch a new federal party, the People’s Party of Canada. He visited The Telegram on Friday to answer questions about his views on many issues, including equalization and immigration.
Maxime Bernier says it’s time for the federal government to stop giving money to the provinces for health care, to start building pipelines by any means necessary and to reduce the number of immigrants finding a new home in Canada.
Bernier, leader of the newly formed People’s Party of Canada, sat down with the editorial board of The Telegram on Friday afternoon to explain the party’s plans for how the federal government should function.
Bernier says among his priorities is completely reforming the equalization formula. Currently, this province does not make any money from equalization payments, due to far higher natural resource revenue than in other provinces, per capita.
Quebec, where Bernier serves as member of Parliament for Beauce, sees $11.7 billion in equalization payments.

Quick! Call the Op-Ed Brigade!
“The reports … show a litany of issues”
Not really surprising since LRT was only just invented yesterday. Oh, wait.
Ottawa: old Algonquin word meaning “many wampum burners”.
If they ran Red Rocket streetcars from the fricking 1950s, would it work? I bet it would.
*
when toronto brought in the CLRV streetcars
to replace the old PCC red rocket streetcars
there were huge issues. they ended up
scrapping the electronic front and rear
couplers at a cost of $100,000 per car and
going back to PCC drawbars. there were
also all sorts of issues with the fly by wire
pneumatics (brakes, doors) freezing up.
it was also not unusual for brakes to freeze
up on CLRVs left out in the yard in winter.
one frozen car could keep everything
behind it stalled in the yard.
subway trains often had to be babysat
overnight in tunnels by crews on time
and a half pay, to avoid them freezing up
in the yard.
don’t get me started on rusty old flyer
buses that were build in mississauga.

Yeah, but snow will soon be a thing of history books. Why build for winters when they will soon be gone forever.
Except you will never see a lobbyist using mass transit.
Fvck-ups federally, fvck-ups municipally, and with that recent Wynne fvck-up, provincially … hurrah, a Lieberal trifecta!
but when it comes to climate change, don’t worry, we are competent, we can solve the problems, give us your money, we have everything under control.
Zumba how right you are. Here in Alberta wind power is at 16% of installed capacity. Meanwhile Brooks solar is at 0 (again).
I wish the NDP office electricity was turned off when solar isn’t running. Then the left could get first hand experience with what they want to put us through.
Why worry about the condition of mass transit? After all, isn’t all life supposed end in 11 years. Didn’t She Guevara tell us so?
You cannot expect the SNC Lavalin-led Rideau Transit Group to overcome EXTREME weather caused by your SINFUL pickup truck driving!! This is ALL your FAULT!! For not riding the bus, or Rail-light aka slow-speed rail aka no-speed rail (in the EXTREME winter). Ohhhhhhhh mammmmaaaaa … its ALL because of Catastrophic Anthropogenic Global Warming.
Standard results when any situation goes into a contract, especially with a Compliant Government who will minimize failures of Their Vote Buying brokerage politics policies. Something which the Liberal Party has demonstrated for decades.
Such situations, whether it is the Top Bureaucrat of Canada’s dominating Federal Government civil servants e.g. The current ___ Clerk of the Privy Council___ supports an Errant Top Political Elected Official____ Canada’s Prime Minister of a Majority Government; ___in using the power inherent in either Position of Authority indicating a preference to not maintain Canada’s Laws until reminded of such a dereliction of Honesty and Integrity.
It is certainly beholding on ANY Canadian or Canadien, regardless of having sworn a special Oath to hold the Laws of Canada as a Personal Responsibility; but in addition ANY Canadian or Canadien having established Ones position as an Officer of Court, must be true to Herself or Himself, as is any member of a Canada’s Military Force accepting and agreeing to be placed in Harm’s Way for the betterment and security of Canada’s ordinary Citizens.
The trains have their problems, but Calgary’s LRT system in not bad considering what Mother Nature hurls against it. But then, Calgary buys their trains from Siemens.

jim watson a liberal is the mayor of ottawa. that is all you have to know about the lrt delay
I live in Ottawa.
The LRT was never needed and was bound to cost a fortune the city didn’t have, thousands of dollars for every man, woman and child living here, whether they cared to ride the damn thing or not.
Now we learn the trains don’t even work and probably never will—after they tore up the perfectly functional Transitway.
All so Jim Watson could have a “legacy” and OC Transpo could fiddle a few hardworking white male bus drivers out of their pensions—at the same time they refused to fire an African halfwit no matter how dangerous a driver she was until she killed someone.
The Olympic Stadium all over again—and again, the only winners are a few Montreal Libranos with interests in construction and engineering firms.
I hate this city.
Let me guess, the LRT cars are from Bombardier.
You can always take the bus.
