The death toll from the Camp Fire in Northern California has grown to 63 people and a list of people unaccounted for has 631 names on it, Butte County Sheriff and Coroner Kory Honea said Thursday evening.
Seven sets of remains were discovered Thursday, he said.
My friend Walter escaped his home in Magalia with his wallet and nothing else, including his dog “Justin”.
If you were planning to donate to SDA in the coming days, I’ll ask you send a little something to help Walter instead. You can donate via Paypal to the address Canada@johnehoffman.us. The account is set up so that money deposited will be transferred directly to Walter’s bank account.
Gerard Venderleun has returned to his blog since his own narrow escape.
They all were leaving it all on the field everywhere in Chico. From Penny’s in the Mall to the Birkenstocks Store downtown on Broadway. In big jobs, and in small jobs, there was a long train of people working at the top of their game no matter what their game was. It has been days of this now in Chico; days of there being no big jobs or small jobs but only the unremitting effort the people to help their fellow citizens no matter what.
And since none of the Acronym Agencies have really shown up yet, this has all been done without any real government organization. Instead, it has been like watching a spontaneous Humanitarian Olympics rise up out of the town itself; and once started it has become as self-organizing and self-sustaining as the fire itself.

not much to be said. help where you can.
We too have friends near there that have had families staying with them that for a week did not know the status of their property.
Their house was spared.
We have visited the area several times over the years.
Things to consider when making main street safer for pedestrians: is it part of the emergency escape route?

Good point. I see the same “planning” here in the Vancouver area, where disasters from earthquake, tidal wave, volcano and fire are all real possibilities. The freeway system is a joke and municipalities, particularly the city of Vancouver, are literally reducing the capacity of roads. In an actual disaster nothing will move.
No, DO NOT help where you can. California has for decades voted Democrat. For decades, Democrats have refused to allow controlled burns, clearing of brush, etc.. For decades, Democrats have done zero to implement the plans put in place for water in California 100 years ago.
Attempting to help those who refuse to help themselves is enabling, and it is a fundamentally evil act.
California has chosen suicide, and they will not change their minds if you “help” where you can.
Think about all the money they have burned on high speed rail that could have built their water system, when you are thinking about “helping where you can”.
VDH, from last year.

Sane people have seen the problem coming for entire life times. But hey, you go ahead and “help where you can” while they continue to vote for jumping off the cliff. You spend your time and resources saving lemmings if that is what you think is best.
VDH has been writing about how the state’s water infrastructure has been ignored for I do not know how long.
Kate’s friend Walter may not have ever voted Democrat. It is his decision and on his conscience.

So he has been telling people, who would not listen, for years, that this was coming.
It is likely he is not the only one who has not been heeded by the The People’s Temple of the Environment…
Well, whatever I guess. Note that I asked readers to redirect funds they’d send here to my friend instead , but don’t let that stand in the way of your pontificating.
I have given what I can … if for nothing else … than to illustrate CHARITY and COMPASSION can never be supplanted by governments or NGO’s. But primarily because it is what people do who still have intact souls. And, I expect the vast majority of these fire victims in Paradise had nothing to do with the current political status of this (formerly) great State.
OTOH … don’t be asking me to donate a dime to the Malibu Fire victims. a) they don’t need it. b) they ARE the problem.
Done.
If I had a dog I’d call him Justin too, just so I could kick his ass and yell “Justin you SOB!”
I agree Kate, you only asked for help for Walter and Gerald. I grew up near there, born in Selma, CA just like VDH. My sister lives in Ventura, last years fires, my brother lives in Mariposa, not a live tree in sight, drought.
I remember when the Calif. water project was almost finished, I think Gov. Browns father Edmund was a proponent. Then in the 70’s or so they quit. May have been later, probably when Edmunds son got elected. I left, the leftest were tearing that place into a hundred, thousand, million pieces. Now they’re burning down the rubble.
Loved growing up there – San Mateo, Palo Alto, Coarsegold (Spring Valley School), San Mateo, US Navy.
Thanks for listening.
