  1. Thanks for the video! The older I get, the more fascinating ancient civilizations are to me.

    1. The video is essentially a recap of a book written by Michael Coe (who appears in the vid) entitled “Breaking the Myan Code”…… minus the nonsense shots of WWI and WWII. The Myans were one of my interests back some 25 or so years ago. My interest started with a chance reading of a book called “Incidents of Travel in Yucatan” by an adventurer named John Stevens written in the mid 1800s. I went on to read other books and superficially explored a number of the Myan cities in the Yucatan.

      To make a long story short, Stevens explored many of the ruins and put forth the (then) radical proposition that these were not created by a lost/disappeared people but rather were built by the ancestors of the current inhabitants. It was radical because the people in Yucatan/Guatemala were considered too primitive, too ignorant, (yes, too degenerate) by mainstream archeologists to have built them.

      By western standards, truly a “weird” race. Their writing, their art designs, their religion look like drug induced hallucinations. Aside from their impressive and monumental stone buildings and works (and note that they never discovered the true arch concept), there really isn’t a lot to admire from these people.

      Oh yes, forgot…. they did have the concept of zero.

  5. I had posted earlier about my anger at the Kavanaugh hearings, whereby they were so depressing I could not watch any news. So it looks like the judge is going to be voted onto the U.S. Supreme Court — a close win for decency and common sense, and a close loss for the corrupt establishment dominating U.S. institutions. One keen writer mentioned that the Kavanaugh inquisition was a precursor to a possible Trump impeachment inquisition, with all the media-driven hysterics and all.

    One question is which side, the Republicans or the Democrats, are more galvanized for the November mid-terms. I get email commentaries from pro-Trump blogs, and they say that some polling has the Republicans inching back up, given that moderate independents are horrified by the anti-Kavanaugh hysteria. They also say that more support money, for the Republicans, is coming in, given the Washington circus of the the past weeks. I hope all of this is true. The odds are that the Republicans might lose one or both houses. If so, impeachment hearings will begin.

    I often run into agricultural workers in Arizona who boast of being “Indio.” They laugh at my attempts to communicate with them in Spanish. And they say the Indio are people from many states in Mexico and Guatemala, and beyond, who lived in areas unconquered by the Spanish, who preserved their native languages, and who lived for centuries unmolested by the culture of European invaders.

    Given their good cheer, exuberant personalities, and fearlessness in the face of hard work, I wonder if the “Indio” people of Mexico and Central America would not integrate better into Anglo-Saxon nations than their Hispanic-ized cousins currently are.

    Put as a question: Is the culture of Mayan Mexico, unfettered by the Old World’s rivalries, religious excesses and internecine feuds, as it was, more amenable to American Constitutional order than the forced Catholicism of today’s Mexico is? Or, did the Indio really require five centuries of tenderizing in “cleansing” Spanish Catholicism to condition them for integration?

    After watching this Nova episode’s chronicle of the artful, literate and scientific strains extant in Mayan society, I have come to doubt that Spanish conditioning is a prerequisite for the integration of El Sud’s Indio people into modern America.

      1. I have spoken to and observed many, many Mexicans who seem to have Indian heritage, and they overwhelmingly want to be Americans. The great majority of their school age children are indistinguishable from their European classmates in ability and aspirations, and are at least as well-behaved and focused on their future as are children of Americans who have been in the US for generations.

        Another thing that comes across in conversation is the lawlessness and corruption of Mexico.

    I’ve been following this blog for about a decade, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen it this bad before. Very seldom blog posting. Is it time that I stop checking this blog on a daily basis?

  20. This past Wednesday and Thursday were the 25th anniversary of the Battle of Mogadishu, which inspired the book and movie Blackhawk Down. Right now, I’m watching one of the documentaries made about that event which is part of my DVD package.

    In response, Bill Clinton withdrew the American forces.

  22. One of the hallmarks of communist countries is that they must prevent their own people from fleeing the country.

    Well Venezuela is now tightening the screws. The UN estimates that 2.3 million have left the country in the last few years, mostly in response to lack of food. In response, the government has now set up a special police force to “monitor” the emigration and has greatly increased the cost of passports. I believe the real purpose of the task force is to restrict the flow.

    The depth of Europe’s Dark Ages is fifteen notches higher than Mayan pinnacle.

    When South American natives were piling up stones with measly crawl spaces, Europeans were building cathedrals with soaring interiors and glass windows flooding in light. Native economies were based on destroying neighbors and stealing their commodities. Low and slow as Europe became it was never so low as Aztec, Mayan, Incan and all the rest.
