Correcting grammar and spelling is “racist,” says yet another leftist academic.

Because judging people by what falls from their mouths – its comprehensibility, precision and so forth – is racist and oppressive. And so, if someone sounds barely literate, and uninterested in being understood by anyone outside of their immediate circle, then you should pretend that this is somehow your fault. It’s the way of the woke.

    Some, not all, blacks have created, made up, their own culture…and language….to purposely set themselves apart….

      2. This was from a black that went to university so a little more literate. Uneducated ones don’t say anything, they just shoot you as is happening every night and day in Toronto and the GTA.

  3. I always thought that making an effort to use proper grammar and to have a vocabulary that consists of more than street lingo was something to strive for.

    I appreciate being corrected on my use of English. I correct others. It’s about lifting ourselves up so we don’t sound like drug-dealing losers. A decent use of language is key to garnering respect from others … who may be hiring. Although, the downside is that you will not be able to understand nor tolerate ‘rap music’.

    It ain’t music! But it may be racist. And I don’t actually give a shit. I have my Steely Dan collection.

    1. I remember an interview with the now disgraced Bill Cosby about 20 or more years ago,in which he spoke very negatively about “ghetto talk”. He said, how are you going to get a job when you can’t even speak English?

      Of course today that good advice can no longer be mentioned because Bill was a sexual predator.

      And today,thanks to the media and Hollywood’s glorification of the gangsta life, no one wants to get a job anyway,unless it’s as a gangsta/dope dealer. I sometimes wonder if the people who perpetuate this myth ever reflect on the damage they have done to that segment of society. Undoubtedly not.

      1. Interesting how differently the Dems treat Bill (Cosby) and Bill (Clinton). Cosby was speaking up for the black community and the Dems had to silence him.

      3. Bill Cosby was a great black role model until he got caught drugging and molesting women. His message was correct, too bad it will go down with his dark side. Seems that as far as the left is concerned, one strike and you are out … even if you are innocent. A woman’s accusation means if over for you.

        When I think carefully about this situation, I begin to see the wisdom of Islam regarding women. That should frighten western women. They have much to lose, and they don’t seem to know that.

      Ace British stand up comedian Jimmy Carr has a little joke he uses at the beginning of some of his shows. He mentions that he’s British and that he does not have an accent; that he is speaking properly.

And even MORE racist to demand education, and basic academic competency from … people of color. People ovvvv culllller have a “right” to their heritage of life in the bush. And we should all PAY them for it too! A living wage, no less.

  7. One day, while I was teaching, I vented that many of my students were inarticulate in expressing themselves and sloppy in their spelling. The secretary scolded me about this, claiming I made much ado about nothing because language is “evolving”.

    Since many of my students would go into industry when they graduated, it would have been interesting to see them make that claim when they prepared drawings or issued shop orders that no machinist or welder could understand.

    1. In 1971, I started in Interior Design at the University of Manitoba, the class size was 120. After Christmas, the class halved to 60. The others were failing in drafting. As the instructor said, you may be the world’s best interior designer, but if you can not convey your ideas to either the building department or to the contractor to be built, then your intentions mean nothing.

      1. I emphasized that to my students, particularly in the drafting courses I taught. The drawings they prepared were to tell a complete, unambiguous story about what was being portrayed. Brevity was appreciated, accuracy mandatory, and clarity a necessity.

        The reason was that whoever would be looking at the prints made from those drawings might not work for the same firm as they were, likely wouldn’t know who prepared or checked them, and probably wouldn’t know how to get in touch if there were any questions.

        Did any of that sink in with my students? Of course not. Instead, there was incessant mewling and puking about how mean I was for returning their “masterpieces” all covered in red ink, that I was the worst instructor they ever had, and that their work was perfect in every way and how dare I find fault with any of it. Guess who my last department head defended?

          Where I came from one would not dare question the instructor, unless they totaled the marks incorrectly.
          We just took “it” like a soldier. You know, that “stiff upper lip and all those very British mannerisms.” We were often given the average marks of the whole class. Often that was enough of an humiliation that we cared not to discuss anything any further.

          This one instructor from Ireland, that I recall, would give classmates murderous looks that if looks could kill, they’d be dead.

          Perhaps you were too kind, Sir.

  9. On the very strong recommendation of a friend, I recently read Dalrymple’s book Life at the Bottom. .
    It’s a collection of his essays over the decades. It deals, inter alia, with the subject of this thread.

    Extremely interesting and informative about the causes and symptoms of the cultural wars waged by liberal middle class intellectuals.

    For those not familiar with the name (nom de plume) he is a British doctor who spent much of his practice in prison hospitals.

  11. I know plenty of Blacks (some from the US) who don’t speak that way. At all. They’re just as disgusted with ghetto trash as I am, actually probably more so.
    They recognized a long time ago that if they wanted a better life, THEY had to present themselves to the world in a way that showed that they were deserving of at least a chance.

  15. Thomas Sowell dealt with this very subject in his book, “Black Rednecks and White Liberals”. What is touted as black, ghetto vernacular is the English spoken by the plantation overseers and passed on to the slaves of the antebellum south. The position of overseer was typically held by the roughest, least educated white elements since it involved spending the days in the fields often supervising physical labour and administering corporal punishment. The English they spoke was a mix of English dialect particularly Cumbrian and Geordie bastardized with Gaelic from their origins in the central English borderlands and Scottish lowlands. The influence of that culture was seen in the KKK’s use of the burning cross as a declaration of hostility since that was the thing used by Scottish clans to declare war on a neighbouring clan at their border. While I’ve no doubt that the brutal, ill-educated, racist elements of the antebellum south would have been thrilled to know that academics of the twenty-first century would be working assiduously to preserve their culture, modern members of the black community would do well to be striving for something better.

    1. The book “The Help” written by Kathryn Stockett, published in ’09 is an excellent read. At turns hilarious and heartwarming, it is a page turner as it is heavy with the patois ethnic lingo of 1960s Jackson Mississippi.

      The movie version starring Octavia Spencer, Viola Davis and others was good too, but I prefer the book.

    Could be that our emotive comrades have so little in common with the real world that we see no benefit to communication.

      1. Unaware of what year it was, Joe wandered the streets, desperate for help. But the English language had deteriorated into a hybrid of hillbilly, valley girl, inner-city slang and various grunts. Joe was able to understand them but when he spoke in an ordinary voice he sounded pompous and faggy to them.

  19. I once saw a video clip of some female comedian on Saturday Night Live in the 1970s and her routine was mimicking teenage girls talking. What struck me afterwards was that she never once said “like” or “you know.” I sometimes joke that I hope Frank Zappa is in Hell for “Valley Girl.” “Like”, “um,” and “you know” aren’t just for teenagers anymore. I’m surrounded by adults who can’t speak one sentence without using one or more of those words.
