When I was a grad student at UBC nearly 40 years ago, I knew many people who had leftist attitudes, though not necessarily subscribing to that ideology. Some were my fellow grad students. Some were members of the religious congregation I attended worship services with.
I was like the kid in Andersen’s tale of the monarch’s new wardrobe. While everyone else went along with the consensus that it was good and right to be nice to commies and tree-huggers, if not being commies and tree-huggers themselves, I openly questioned just what those people thought they were doing.
Not surprisingly, I was written off as a redneck loon.
Now it’s nearly 4 decades later. I’m sure some of those people might have changed their views and inclinations during that time. I’m also sure that they would never say that I was right all along, but blame me for not trying harder to convince them that they were heading in the wrong direction.
Yup, there’s no cure for stupidity.

Maybe its their comfort level, the nice house in Barrhaven or the condo in Westboro, that keeps them from seeing the big picture. Patriotism is not a word you hear often from Canadians.
