  1. Another link, this ones shows a table of ratings over the years, highlighting just how much the show has tanked:

You can see that they had their highest ratings all-time in 2014. This means that this debacle is not just the result of the long-term trend away from traditional media to smartphones and on-demand services, otherwise you’d see a gradual decline over time. Instead you see a huge drop-off this year, and previously a slow decline since 2014. To have such a huge tank in such a short time means it must be recent events, and I’d say the 50% of people who call themselves conservative did not want to watch a host (Kimmel) who has spent the entire last year ridiculing and antagonizing them.
I’ve vowed not to watch his show again myself, or any production that includes him. Same with Colbert, Bee and any other person who disdains me.

  2. Bringing Kimmel back was the first mistake. He has become stridently partisan, thereby guaranteeing that most conservatives (a sizable chunk of the American population) would find something better to do with their time.
Even given that the Academy is strongly progressive, you would think that they would care enough about ratings so as not to gratuitously alienate so many of their potential audience.

  3. I am a habitual channel surfer and DVR’er … I typically watch 2, if not 3 or 4 programs simultaneously. Watching one program bores me. I used to channel surf and/or DVR the Hollywooden Award Shows when they were broadcast … but no more. I figure that I will hear anything I “need” to know about the Oscars … virtually “simulcast” on social media and newssites … or on TV the next day. Meh.
The Academy Awards haven’t made it into my Sunday evening channel surfing for years … too predictable. Too banal. Too much depravity. For instance … all the awards bestowed upon the “pedophile coming of age GAY film” … predictable. Or the BIZARRE film of the year … won by a Mexican Director who proudly claimed that he “broke down the border door”. Predictable … but WTF with the orgasmic Hollywood applause at that statement? Sick. Anti-American.

  5. As with the NFL, they are discovering, albeit perhaps unknowingly, that if you insult half your fan base, your viewershippe wil decline.

  6. Never watch them. Haven’t in years.
The only 2017 films I have seen are “Darkest Hour” and “Dunkirk”.
Most films based in the present are riddled with the incessant modern fixation on gender this-and-that and whatever “diversity” is supposed to mean.
    Boring.

  7. havent seen this show since Billy Crystal was host.
they need a catchy tweet name #ohnohollyweirdsameoldsameold
