  3. Bell Labs phoned and they want their clean, polite, white future back. I want my clean, polite, happy, white hoop-skirted girlfriend future back. I guess they didn’t plan for … the … other … uh … cultures … in the future.
    I wouldn’t go near the space needle today, or ride the monorail… too sketchy and dangerous. Too grungy.
    But seriously … other than the Japanese (and maybe the Hong Kong tailors Association) … what other cultures on the planet had such a positive proactive, fantastic future planned? None. And now, it is apparent if “they” can’t have “our” happy, clean, white, polite, future … then “they” will damn sure keep us from getting “ours”. I’m not being racist … I’m being culturalist. The schmaltzy clip is cringeworthy … but it is also perfectly representative of the forward looking, happy, bright, polite, future that my culture promised me. I was steeped in these kinds of visions of the future.. I was promised! And in many ways, we have created even MORE than a touchtone princess phone … but the happy, clean, polite Disneyesque landscape has morphed into tent cities and squalor. How depressing. Our technology advances, as our culture rots.
    I had a conversation on a long cross country flight with a young man who had just been accepted to Harvard. When I asked him what he would be studying, he surprised me by saying “medical ethics”. He was obviously bright enough to pursue virtually any subject matter that he wanted, but he was passionate about medical ethics … because he saw that our technology is far outpacing our ability to handle it. That our society is in grave danger, as technology overwhelms our social stagnation. Yeah … we got the promised technology … and more … so much more but our culture is actually spiraling backward. Now, our instant feedback social media flurry is increasing teen suicide rates. And now our social media giants are erasing vast tracts of our constitutional rights through Stalinesque (not Disneyesque) thought policing.
    We better start asking not “can” we do it … because we can … but “should” we do it. “Should” we robotize 90% of our population right out of a job. What are the social consequences ? 10% of the population living in great walled cities? Or will it be a clean, white, polite, future of happy teens skipping across a worry-free landscape with nary a tent (or pile of human excrement) in sight?
