A surprisingly smart take.

From the TorStar.

Scheer’s ad may seem to some too weird and too poorly executed to be calculating. But I think every awkward pause and quirk therein is painstakingly deliberate. The Conservative leader is positioning himself as the only unapologetically unsophisticated, un-slick future candidate in the race for PM — in the way he dresses, carries himself and even in the company he keeps: neighbourhood moms who aren’t intimidated to interrupt his official campaign message to say hello (the implication being that nothing, not even a rolling camera, can stop Scheer from greeting an ordinary Canadian on the street). And then of course, there are the kids scaling the jungle gym behind him.

When I first saw it, I was unimpressed. This hardly seemed like a professional ad. It could have been filmed at the park by the Post Office here in town, where we all stop to talk about how cold November has been. Maybe over by the school playground. The place where all the parents gravitate together and gossip about who’s dog it was that was found on facebook last night. Maybe in the rink, where we all buy the 50-50’s, know the kids on the hockey team and talk to parents about their teens driving too fast.
It just didn’t feel like a good ad from the big agencies in Toronto.
Then the establishment pile-on happened and the first thing that came to mind after that was, “Oh, look. Those sunz-a-b’s in Toronto and Ottawa are making fun of me again.”

  1. Maybe Scheer’s the anti-Trump Trump that Canada needs. Having Shrillary Clinton as an opponent meant that Trump needed to be the uber-Trump. In this case, all Scheer needs to do is remind the folks, over and over and over again, that Trudeau is as unlike them as Marilyn Manson.

  2. He needs to contrast the likeable everyman schmo image that kind of ad creates with another ad that conveys competence and ability to kick ass when necessary. The right balance between the two would be killer.

  3. All I got from that column is that the writer kept hinting at “scary Conservative with a hidden agenda”.

  4. The Nineties Acceptance by The East Coast & West Coast of President Clinton’s sleazy “peccadilloes” is the Suave; Grown-up; Adult World of- Sophisticated European Union -casual attitude to Sex among the Elites of “One-World” culture.
The Elite World which never has to worry about the Chaos of the mass deplorables trying to feed and shelter their Families as  Western Society’s millennium of evolution towards a Social Contract for everyone is cast aside.
Cast aside with the casualness of aTen-Year old fat kid waiting at a School Bus stop saying to Eight-Year olds; that’s your Anus; you know Uranus; followed by the Script written descriptive word usage for the Eight to repeat in front of the Eight year old’s Mother–“”Penis Breath”. When? in the Family Genre of the 1982 Movie — E. T.—.
Ronald Reagan understood what the Progressive(s) cult was up too; But first He had to finish the “Cold War”.
Using the meme of Subtereanen Guilt; written by future proponents of LGBTQwerty? “Gosh I am doing it, why don’t we make IT the normal routine for all Tweenies.”
It is not Slick-Willy’s fault, really!—-It is all the supplicant Media wanting to appear Sophisticated as the COOL Europeans.—Slick-Willy should be called Sick-Willy and sheltered from the Need to Make Turmoil in everyone else’s life; because He was Abused or Taught, before changing His last name from HOPE to the most common name for communities in the U.S.A. Clinton.

  5. They aren’t worried about him yet which scares me. Not one attack on him yet from the liberals/msm (same thing). By now they’d painted Harper as evil incarnate.

  6. … Then the establishment pile-on happened and the first thing that came to mind after that was, “Oh, look. Those sunz-a-b’s in Toronto and Ottawa are making fun of me again.”
Indeed. Very similar to Victor Davis Hanson’s discussion linked earlier this morning about why “deplorables” supported Mr. Trump.

  7. The CPC has to go for the LPC’s throat. They are starting well, with this home video ad of Scheer, now they have to use an Alinsky tactic and define Trudeau as a “one percenter”, which shouldn’t be too difficult as he IS a one percenter. The approachable yokel bit will only play to your permanent constituency,Ange, you need a chunk of the rest of the voters.
“Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, polarize it.”
We old folks don’t care, but the 8% swing vote DOES,so get vicious Andrew & company, and turn the average Canadian against the billionaire elite and their fair haired pretty boy.
Do that and you can win,and all Canadians will win. If Scheer can carry it off,the only disappointed people will be the UN,IPCC, China, and Liberals, and China will come aboard as soon as we sell them the CBC,and remove the tanker moratorium on the West coast.

  8. So this floozy walks into this pub, and she yells at this slut parading around the floor, “I know what kind of makeup you’re wearing!”

  9. Yep, it’s deliberate “aw, shucks” imagery. I doubt voters will think he has a hidden villa in Europe, millions of undisclosed shares in government dependant companies, or vacations on exclusive islands with lifelong billionaire buddies. He probably prefers to bbq a steak and watch sports with middle class friends and family.
Scheer is genuinely more Brad “football dad” Wall than Stephen “cold, competent” Harper or Justin “take a selfie with me and my socks, dude” Trudeau. He doesn’t have to compete with the federal NDP leader since there’s not a snowballs chance in hell a socialist will vote conservative. If anything, he should help the NDP weaken the Liberals to draw leftist support away from the Liberals. Being polite to the NDP leader might even help his image in central Canada whose upper middle class conservative voters are all about being nice, passively accepting constant insults from progressives and living in constant fear of offending anyone, anywhere, anytime. Scheer’s smile and happy demeanor might work well for him. Does he look like he has a hidden agenda?
I agree the CPC needs to balance the guy next door image with businessman competence. The party’s economic policies should make that fairly easy. Friendly and approachable but not a doormat.
Snobby sneering from the usual suspects would probably backfire, like the reporter says, normal people will both identify with him and become defensive/offended by class-based attacks. It opens up the limousine Liberals to “check your privilege” attacks.

  10. PROGRESSIVE Conservatives tried that with Clark, Scar. Clark is not now, nor has he ever been a conservative. He is and always was a liberal nerd.

  11. Seriously? Who is watching political advertisement? That’s like the ’90s .
Regardless of political orientation, you must be a baby boomer to pay attention to those sleek, phony PR campaigns.

  12. He has won a tricky leadership debate and he was speaker of the House. He is also very quick on his feet in interviews. He comes across as a lot more knowledgeable and thoughtful than Mr. Platitude. I buy it.

  13. No, they did not. The medical a decided to portray Stanfield and Clark as dorks. Sheer is neutralizng that message by getting ahead of it. Good move.

  14. I bet most TorStar readers had to look up who Blake Shelton was, which just further underlines the point.

  15. Media portrayed (not medical)Sorry this tablet constantly changes words. I try to check but often miss something.

  16. I’m a Boomer. I loathe these stupid “smart politics” type of ads. They don’t do anything other than create a cringe response in this voter. Nobody out there is even watching from the other side. I vote conservative because all the other guys are commies. Yeah, that kind of “socialist”. I’m quite prepared to raise the Black Flag & lop off some heads, right now. I’m retired with time on my hands.
I grew up with the likes of Castro (commie/socialist) putting bullets into people against walls who didn’t think like him, with Mao (commie/socialist) who shipped you off to the “countryside re-education camps” via SJW’s called Red Guards, or put bullets into you & sent the bill to your parents & Breznitsky or whatever (commie/socialist), rolling tanks down the streets if the Russkies didn’t like your brand of politics, while here in Canada some of us dodged the newly invented “IED” called Royal Mail Boxes loaded with pilfered construction union dynamite & rusty nails in Montreal with Castro/Che wannabees called the FLQ. Notley’s Heroes.
Saskatchewan still had Mr Canada Health Care in charge & the commies/socialists ran that place into the ground. I remember Bob Stanfield, briefly & Joe Who. Real conservative movers & shakers. Moved them right over to the commies & socialists in the NDP & LPOC. They had the consistency of “ship’s biscuits” circa 1790. Andrew Scheer gives me the same shivers up me timbers that….he’ll lose, too. Even. If. I. Vote. For Him.
Then we got Trudeau the First, another more svelt version of Castro the communist/socialist to create his “Just Society”. Oh, like as in Justin, or as in Just Quebec Counts? Still had to put guns in our streets to put down the more rabid communists than himself. Just another LPOC/Queebec lawyer to re-write our “constitution” to turn this collection of 10 Bananadas into a Soviet styled gulag, ruled by nine (9) appointed “Judges”. Visit some CDN Uni to see how that’s turning out. The message today is “you don’t own it”, “you didn’t build it” & “shut up” if you don’t sing from the Collective Song Sheet.
We are witnessing Trudeau the Second’s brain dead, dope induced stupor, while the string pullers destroy this country from the inside out, aided by like minded travelers in certain commie/socialistic provincial capitals. Capitalism in any way is DOA in Canaduh & headed to Venezuelan collapse & they put up ads like this? The current .gov apparatus is run by outsiders, aided by insiders who never cast a ballot last election.
Yeah, Mr Milquetoast is gonna draw voters with milquetoast ads.
Stupid idiots. He’s outnumbered by just the collective public sector union voters. What this country needs is a Bastille Day & French haircuts. Enjoy the Decline.

  17. LC nails it. The football dad image worked for Brad Wall for a decade, and he could probably have won elections for another decade if he had so chosen. The same image worked for Dalton McGuinty through winning three consecutive elections before his image was blown apart in a series of scandals. And the rest of you bleating about ‘going for the throat’ or some such nonsense have no idea what you’re talking about. The election is two years away. This is the time for Scheer to make people comfortable with him, his image and what he stands for. And the Tories know this. They blew apart a series of leaders by making Liberal contenders images for them throughout the Harper years.
So yes, this is very wise imaging and politics.

  18. Same as the 2016 Con ads, deliberately low budget, deemed to be more authentic.
The most devastating was the guy shaking his head in a Tim Hortons while news of adscam played on the Screen.
It was laughed at for the low production values but its what put Harper over the top.
That’s the strategy, I agree with Lance. Whether it has been executed correctly time will tell. All about not enabling the sinister attack the Libs usually use. The Libs last painted JT as this diamond in the rough leader who really was ready with a new vision. Cant do that again because he has a record. Jagmet Singh will be crowding him for the GQ vote, the left vote an the some of the immigrant vote, the virtue signalling white vote who feel good electing someone who isn’t from a perceived majority community.
A resurgent NDP is what is required for a Con win….but be careful what you ask for, since a minority also makes a coalition government more likely and the price will be PR on the NDP and Green’s terms. Making a Con government, coalition or otherwise, unlikely for many years.

  19. Being ‘folksie’ is the new CPC philosophy? Heaven forbid that this country ever gets politicians who can engage the public in a serious manner.
Scheer’s personality will over come the progressive education system, the leftard fake news media and the civil service dominated by socialist at best? I doubt anyone swallows that.

  20. Indeed, unfortunately, the ad comes across as awkward. Some it a few days ago. Sure, Scheer is trying the “aw shucks” approach, but I’m not sure that’s going to work. I would prefer it was a bit more upbeat and to the point, as Scheer has been much better speaking in parliament than the ad.
Its growing pains, but there is little time for that. With Selfie Socks promising BILLIONS to the Gimme Dat demographic, it will be an uphill battle to win over the LIVs who just want more Free Stuff™, and are easily duped by corrupt LIEberal idiots

  21. “made fun of me again”.
tell me about it. rather ummm, ‘sensitive’ topic to the historybuff.
ya, Im a real ‘sensitive’ guy.
the thing I truly find curious about me the 66 yr old hippie, how my ideology has evolved.
hard core new democrap in my 20s aka gee, I want a share of the wealth. etc etc.
now I cherry pick. which is why harper NEVER got my vote. a consummate control freak.
not hard to stumble on those on parlaiment hill.
turdeux is a consummate bubblehead sock [puppet], so next time around he can flap in the wind afaIc. as far as Im concerned.

  22. Harper came across as a control freak, but he would never have survived the minority governments without that. I think a lot of it was defensive. I don’t care about personality quirks as long as the leader is strong and headed in the right direction. Harper was.

  23. Early days. Scheer is largely unknown. This, kinda goofy, ad introduces him.
Here’s an early take on the next election: Justin and Jagmeet are going to battle it out for the hipster/recycling mom/greenie/urban vote. In the burbs they are going to split that vote. Scheer’s job is to hold 35-40% outside the wastelands below the 401, in Ottawa and in Vancouver. Let Jagmeet slaughter Trudeau from the multi-culti left. Scheer needs to hold the conservative base and win a few suburban seats. I will be disappointed if I see him campaigning downtown anywhere.
Ads like this are about reminding the base Scheer is one of them. Then you have a bit of footage of Scheer in the Speaker’s Chair with the howlers on both sides being called to order. Could be very effective.
I still would have preferred Maxime but the Cons were too chicken. Oh well.

  24. Scheer, and all but one conservative, voted IN FAVOUR of the Paris Accord. This not only says that they support Climate Change and Global Warming myth, but by this vote they agreed to the tRUDEau Carbon Tax.

  25. That’s a pretty good example of moral cowardice but it’s also politically expedient as by seeming a “denier” in the toxic PC climate of Canada he would be incessantly persecuted by the MSM the way Stockwell Day would have been if he had become leader instead of Harper (humans with Dinosaurs). He can’t become PM unless he finesses some mindless middle vote as well as getting the NDP and or Greens to take back LPC support. There are only enough “conservatives” for around 33-36% of the popular vote. This is why actual conservative government in Canada is extremely unlikely. Harper was likely as good as it gets and the Spawn has already erased his record of slowing down the approach to the fiscal and cultural vortex.

  26. The black woman on the first bench was just too contrived as a first greeter. His shirt was too phony and doesn’t make him look attractive. The whole thing was phony. We keep sending money and they never hire the best ad agencies.

  27. Exactly! I haven’t donated a dime to the my local MP or to the CPC since that stab in the back.
PO’ed in AB also makes great points, including the university point. Our universities are basically run as little communist fiefdoms.

  28. Agree with John. Balance off the low-key with a tie and serious commentary on the economy … or whatever.
BTW, y’all see this “Re-elect Justin Trudeau in 2019” ad?
    https://youtu.be/MBvZ78Krv44
    What a bozo.

  29. maybe being a real conservative and not liber lite would help get some votes, at least from the few conservatives still alive in Canada.

  30. Does nobody remember ‘just visiting’ Ignatieff ?
Does nobody remember Dion’s infamous CTV stop and start interview?

  31. What these “conservatives” need to do is spell out what the left is & wants & use any of the current action/inaction, or “plans” put forward by the LPOC to illustrate their points: http://sultanknish.blogspot.ca/ The Luxury Hotel from Leftist Hell November 23 2017
There are plenty of illustrative issues going on in this country that emphasize what The Left really wants here, never mind in the USA. The Chinese connections are detailed in the Sidewinder Report 1997 & can be extrapolated further to today, any perusal of our Muslim Brotherhood, or UN operatives’ activities working for the destruction of this country from within can be used as well. It’s not rocket science.
If you can’t see the parallels from this blog post by Daniel Greenfield, you just don’t get it, at all.

  32. Yup, Yup and a lot more you bet yer boots.
We are in significant DEEP shit in this quasi communist country. When politicos start calling for the changing of the Edmonton Eskimo’s name…you know damned well we are.
