56 Replies to “The JFK files”

  1. Not a terribly bold prediction. The die-hard conspiracy fan is impervious to facts and reason. Their allegiance is to paranoia, not reality.

  2. All the good stuff was shredded 40 or 50 years ago. When the CIA killed Kennedy they didn’t record the details. When the FBI investigated, their obfuscation wasn’t written down and what was written was destroyed. We may see a few minor embarrassments but no meat.

  3. What is most interesting about this story is that Congress voted 25 years ago to release this information in 25 years.
Now that the information is to be released, people are attributing it Trump.

  4. “Now that the information is to be released, people are attributing it Trump”
George Bush I chose not to release it 25 years ago. Mind you, oil executive Bush was a CIA property in Texas when Kennedy was killed. Bush might have known a bit more than he led on. Trump is releasing the files against CIA advice.

  5. Too many people were influenced by Oliver Stone’s movie and what it claimed as evidence of multiple shooters.
In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of that terrible day, PBS’s Nova showed a documentary examining what happened. Present-day scientific methods were used to re-construct many of the events and the results were quite persuasive. It was indeed possible that Oswald was the only shooter.
Several years before that, Frontline ran a documentary about Oswald and his background. He definitely was un-hinged and what’s often purported as evidence of a plot is flimsy at best.

  6. Oliver Stone – “That dog don’t hunt”
A bullet from above and behind doesn’t normally blow out the back of the head. A shot from the area of the grassy knoll would.

  7. I’m NOT a conspiracy theorist BUT I don’t believe in coincidences and there’s too many of them here to ignore.
I’ll never forget when it happened and watched live on TV when Ruby shot Oswald at police HQ.
That was all too slick by half.
Add to that the untimely deaths of others involved with some connection to Ruby, The Kennedy’s etc. etc.
No personal theory as to what happened but convinced we’ve not heard all of the story and probably never will.

  8. A shot from the area of the grassy knoll would.
The Nova documentary included a test in which a bullet was fired into material that was similar to that of a human body. As the bullet travelled deeper into the sample, one could see how the shock waves that were produced propagated through that material. That indicated that a severe head injury was possible.
Many of the techniques that were used for the documentary weren’t available during the early 1960s, so the post-mortem examination that was conducted might not have shown this.

  9. If you don’t have a deep pathological NEED for JFK assassination theory, read the following book, all 1506 pages plus memoriam and extensive bibliography.
    Reclaiming History
    The Assassination of President Kennedy
    by Vincent Bugliosi
I had a couple doubts myself (the head pushed back, the magic bullet, Oswald’s allegedly poor marksmanship). ALL UTTERLY REFUTED.
Curiously, I couldn’t remember the exact title so had to go into my home office/library to get the info after narry a mention at Goodreads which failed to include this in its 60 book list. Most of the books were treason/conspiracy.

  10. I was in journalism school when Kennedy was shot. I was sitting at the teletype newswire when the tell-tale alarm of urgent news sounded. As I recall, “President Kennedy shot in Dallas” was the lead. I took it in to my class, interrupting the instructor with the news. It wasn’t until some time later his death was confirmed.
Later, well before the Warren Commission was formed we were individually tasked to determine if Oswald was the lone gunman. To a person, we determined he was not.
I don’t at all expect the evidence yet to be released will do anything but confirm the original verdict of the Warren Commission. Too much invested by those responsible.

  11. I believe they were scrubbed. I think some Oswald files have gone missing. It is critical to establish that he worked for the CIA.

  12. He was put in power by the mafia and taken from power by the mafia. Probably a payback to old Joe senior for ripping them off too many times in the bootlegging empire that made the Kennedy’s stinking nouveau rich.

  13. Nonsense. What exactly is a conspiracy “fan”? People who see a conspiracy in the Kennedy murder (and a number of other mysterious public events) are looking at facts. They are especially looking at many overlooked facts. In this case, even the Church committee agreed there was a conspiracy. There are conspiracies out there, for sure. Groups of people seeking gain through some criminal or illicit activity are not going to advertise their intention. They keep it hidden. That is why these things are called “conspiracies.” When a conspiracy happens, we simply do not have all the information (some of it deliberately hidden), so it is an exercise in looking at what information is available and to some extent theorizing about possible scenarios. The trick is to distinguish between actual conspiracies and wild speculation.
There are hundreds of books written about the Kennedy assassination. Most of them are based on conspiracy theories, and most have valuable information to contribute to the puzzle, even if the particular theory seems flawed. Personally, I like Roger Stone’s book on the Kennedy assassination. I think he has gotten very close to the truth.

  14. The Magic bullet needs to be buried in the foreheads of the conspiracy nuts. They’re the ones who also believe that airliners crashing into buildings cannot melt steel. And that steel cannot melt. And that … bullets all travel in straight lines upon hitting bone. But all it takes is a really clever slogan … like The Magic Bullet … to captify the imaginations of the masses.

  15. I have not read that book, so checked it out on Amazon. At least 25% of the people reviewing gave it only one star, suggesting that Bugliosi distorts facts and effectively rewrites history. Bugliosi is a prosecutor, so perhaps writes from that point of view, which, of course, is necessarily one sided. I am not saying it is, but too many people (also well informed — e.g Jim Garrison) seem to disagree that Oswald acted alone.

  16. It’s well-known that JFK had his share of detractors and that a lot of people had an axe to grind against him.
However, one should remember the words of Hanlon’s Razor: “Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity.” If information about the incident has gone missing, maybe someone was trying to cover up a failure in security rather than a plot.
After all, it’s well known that the CIA often bungled things around that time, the Bay of Pigs invasion being one of them. (The plan for it was drawn up before Kennedy took office.) The result was that a number of senior agency officials were forced to resign.
Oswald could very well be the only one involved. He had the means and the ability and, due to his outlandish politics, had a motive. Scientific evidence strongly indicates that he was the only shooter.

  17. The CIA killed Kennedy? Nonsense, it was the Mafia.
The CIA hatched a plot to assassinate Fidel Castro, using the Mafia who hated him because he had shut down their very lucrative operations in Cuba when he seized power.
But Attorney General Robert Kennedy was waging war against the Mafia in the US, and they felt betrayed after all they had done to help his brother get elected. So they told the Cubans. Castro warned the US in a speech that they could kill leaders too, but the CIA kept trying to kill him anyway. So Castro recruited the Mafia to kill Kennedy.
Just as good a conspiracy theory and any, in my opinion.

  18. A person needs to be open minded.
(for Kenji): Belief that the government may have lied to us once doesn’t make it necessary to believe that every conspiracy theory is true.
There is a pattern of too many untimely deaths in the path of LBJ. (as an aside, if Obama had chosen HRC as VP, he would have died by suicide). I don’t think LBJ called the shots, but he had great motivation to bury the truth. The JFK assassination was good fortune for many of the rich and powerful within the DNC and it happened where they were in control.
If you’re impressed by prosecutors who never lose a case, then obviously whatever you know is all you need to know.

  19. yah you loony toons, a piece of Kennedy’s scalp flying onto the truck of the limo, and Jacky climbing on the truck to retrieve it, is evidence of a shot from behind with a 250 (dear rifle) and a 178 gn bullet, travelling at 1800-2000 fps. 5 confessions, so there are allot of people trying to bolster their CV. Biggest cover up in USA history, and a lot of UNINFORMED idiots are too scared to believe it. CIA, mafia, Johnson, and Hoover with FBI were involved.

  20. *
“scar says… When the CIA killed Kennedy they
    didn’t record the details.”

if the u.s. government can put a man on the moon…
why can’t they do something about those poor
    people on gilligan’s island?
    *

  21. If it was a conspiracy the only organization that could have carried it out and on whose behalf our government would have buried the evidence is …… wait for it …… the KGB. Think about it.

  22. I wonder if the files will contain the Canadian connections in the Kennedy assassination… google Lucien Rivard.

  23. Bugliosi’s book is excellent and exhaustive.
Cranks believing in conspiracy are no different that 911ers.

  24. There certainly was a conspiracy to kill JFK and it was successful. The very definition of a successful conspiracy is that the conspirators don’t get caught.

  25. Bugliosi’s book sounds interesting (I have not read it) but he makes at least one mistake based upon the reviews I have read. Bugliosi sets out to destroy all the conspiracy theories and his writing style does show his contempt for the people holding them. His mistake is in believing that the Warren commission got it right. In one sense, the Warren commission got it partly right in that it was Oswald’s intention to act alone and there was no other intended participant before Oswald took his first shot.
However, the Warren commission did get some things wrong. I recommend the work by retired Australian police detective Colin McLaren done in 2013 based upon the work of weapons expert Howard Donahue done 40 years earlier. McLaren looks at it as an experienced cold case detective. He did not look at the case from the perspective of a conspiracy theory, but he did look at it from a ballistics perspective. Donahue is the only known person who can get off 3 shots using the same World War II rifle that Oswald used in under the required 5.6 seconds. It took Donahue 3 separate tries to get it but on the 3rd time he did get off 3 shots in 5.2 seconds. However, footage of the assassination shows that the 3rd shot follows very close to the 2nd shot and even Donahue could not get that 3rd shot off as fast after the 2nd shot. The next thing is that the 3rd shot has a much bigger boom that the first two shots. McLaren does have a much better explanation for the weird trajectory of the bullet that went through Governor Connolly. McLaren’s explanation is that the Warren Commission got the order of the first 2 bullets wrong: the first missed and the 2nd went through Kennedy’s neck and Connolly’s body. Connolly’s body was turned at 90 degrees after the first shot to see behind him. McLaren thinks Connolly’s testimony that it was the second bullet which hit him bears weight. He also gives weight to street level witnesses who smelled gunpowder. Conclusion: the third shot was not fired by Oswald; it was fired (by accident) by Secret Service Agent George Hickey. If there was a conspiracy, it was that the FBI covered up this friendly fire incident up. I should also note that there are critics of McLaren. Hickey died in 2005.
Bugliosi’s work may be helpful for pre-meditated theories of Johnson, Cuba, Soviets, CIA, Mafia, FBI, Secret Service, etc. McLaren’s work is helpful for a ballistics analysis.

  26. What was covered up?
The fact that Oswald was a damned Communist. Oswald supported Cuba and Castro. He actually defected to the USSR for a few years and had a Russian Wife. They covered up that Oswald met with Cubans and Russians in Mexico.
    Why cover it up?
The US Government was scared stiff. They thought, believed, or knew that If Average Americans thought that Castro and Cuba had anything to do with killing Kennedy, we would be demand vengeance. Imagine a nuclear war in 1963 or 1964. Maybe we would not start the war, maybe Kruschev would have started it before we did or didn’t start a NUCLEAR WAR.
We would be firing missiles with MEGATON Thermonuclear Yields at Russia, Cuba, and probably China too. And Russia would be firing Megaton Thermonuclear weapons at us and Europe too. Add in fleets of B52’s, TU95’s, and thousands of fighter bombers carrying nuclear weapons, aiming at any remaining targets. Hundreds of Millions, maybe Billions would have died. The United States, Canada, Europe, Russia, China, and Japan would have been devastated, with every moderate to large city a radioactive crater.
That is the cover up. They didn’t want the world to end because some ass–le Loser Communist shot the US President from his job site 80 yards away with a POS WW2 Italian Rifle.
It was Lee Harvey Oswald in the Book Depository with a Carcano Rifle.

  27. Remember what happened less than fifty years before the JFK Assassination in Dallas?
In the Spring of 1914, everyone in Europe wanted to avoid war. Then in some shithole Balkan City, Some Loser Anarchist shot the heir of the Austria Hungarian Empire. Two months later, every damned European Nation was either at war, or being trampled by the belligerents because they were in the way.
Imagine if they had Nukes in 1914?

  28. That is not the story. Castro didn’t kill Kennedy. Oswald was just a pretend commie — to make it look like the commies did it. Sorry to burst your theory, but it is full of holes.

  29. What about Oswald’s behavior in the book depository? He was like two floors down casually drinking a coke when all this happens. He was a patsy, just as he stated.

  30. Gord, some conspiracies are true and some are not. Believing in a conspiracy does not, on its own, make a person a crank.

  31. Is this Andrew Scheer comments in SDA because
    He is from Saskatchewan
Report of Kennedy never released to public before must wait to see
    It

  32. You are conflicted between boundless imagination as to what might have been if there had been no cover-up and complete inability to countenance glaring inaccuracies in the official account of actual events.

  33. Note: A friend has recently e-mailed this info when he heard that more classified JFK documents are being released to the public shortly. Enjoy! SW
I’ve spent a good part of my life studying the JFK assassination. In 1996 in Dallas, Tx., on November the 22nd, I took a limousine tour of the exact route and in the exact time frame, from the moment JFK boarded his presidential limo at Love Field, to the moment he and the passengers reached the front of the Texas Book Depository (now a museum) where he met his fatal day, and onto the Parkland hospital where he was declared dead. I was sitting in the same seat as JFK, in a 62 Lincoln limo, (refitted by Hess & Eisenhardt of Cincinnati, Ohio) the exact same model that JFK rode that day. We passed the spot where the fatal bullet hit JFK within seconds of the original shot that had taken place 33 years earlier. . The car was equipped with hidden speakers that mimicked the sound of a high powered rifle firing the three shots from the Texas Book Depository. We stayed another three days going through extensive artifacts in the Sixth Floor Museum and other local attractions.
The normal fee was $75.00 per person. A friend and I had to pay double to get in the car and take the tour at the exact time it had happened 33 years earlier. Ironically, we were four Canadians and one American, plus the driver. Worth every cent. Tours are still available to this day. The present limo however is not a Hess & Eisenhardt, but an assembly line run 1963 Lincoln convertible.

There is but one reason as to why there are so many conspiracy theories. The media rarely publishes the real evidence behind the assassination. For example, I was 14 years old in 1963 when many news sources wrote that all the cameras (both still and motion) that had taken photos and movies in Dealy Plaza that day had been seized by the FBI and never returned. Yet in 1996, many cameras were in the museum on display; so were the photos and movies. All the info on serial numbers, brand names and types of cameras that were inspected by the FBI following the incident were on display.
For years, there was speculation about the one shot that missed both Pres. Kennedy and Governor Connally. The fact is that the bullet hit the dash of the limo, shattered and cracked the windshield. I never saw one photo or heard one word about that until I visited Dallas in ’96. True, the Limo was sent to Hess & Eisenhardt of Cincinnati, Ohio, very shortly after Nov. 22-63. That was to have the dash and the windshield repaired and upgraded with bullet proof glass. The photos of the damaged dash and the windshield were also on display at the museum in ’96. Ford Motor Co. owned the JFK limo and leased it to the Secret Service for several years after. It was used by Presidents Johnson, Nixon and Ford. Today, it sits in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich.
Conclusion. Lee Harvey Oswald, acting alone, shot President Kennedy at 12:00 PM on November 22, 1963. President Kennedy died 30 minutes later at nearby Parkland Hospital. Oswald later shot and killed Officer JD Tippit when the police stopped Oswald to question him. Two days later, at 11:21 am, Jack Leon Ruby, a night club owner from Dallas, shot Lee Harvey Oswald when he was being transported from the Dallas County Courthouse to the Dallas County Jail. Not one shred of solid evidence exists that Oswald and Ruby were motivated by outside forces. And not one shred of evidence exists that there were other shooters at Dealey Plaza that day.
And no evidence exists to disprove that Oswald may have accidentally hit the President while aiming for Governor Connally.

  34. There is so much evidence that Oswald was a sheep-dipped American Patriot who thought he was working for an American government agency who, as an individual, had nothing to do with what was a Coup d’Etat by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson it is sickening that people who tow the VP Johnson cover-up line and back the Warren Commission’s conclusions and don’t care about the ramifications of the Coup and it’s implications on American democracy and the intrinsic meaning and impact of the continued cover-up that they can’t even be bothered to read about the myriad of evidence that is already online and available to the public.
Do I expect any new revelations in the new doc release? NO.
What would make a difference is a new inquiry of the assassination which includes all of the known evidence, SPECIFFICALLY including that which was purposely excluded from the Warren Commission testimony known at the time of the assassination.
Many witnesses of not only the assassination, but witnesses of the cover-up are online as testifying that there was a conspiracy and that the JFK assassination did not happen according to the U.S. Government account.
The whole affair has been twisted by the U.S. government and was/is a usurpation of American democracy then, now, and in future until the truth is known.

Who would he (Hickey) be firing at?? That theory makes no sense. I’ve seen movie footage that disproves that theory. The missing shot is the one in the dash of the car, the bullet shattered and caused the crack in the windshield.
These are the numbers of the official photos that show this.
Warren Commission CE349Z Warren Commission CE350.
Scroll down this site and you’ll find the photos of both the dash and the glass.

Conspiracy theorists never show these photos because they prove that Oswald did indeed fire the three shots. As for the time between the shots, on November 22, 1963, who was there with a stop watch??

  36. Re: Times of Kennedy’s death.
My apologies, I typed up the info from an e-mail that I previously received from a friend who is an ardent JFK assassination enthusiast. The time of the JFK shooting was indeed 12:30 PM CST, time of death was 30 mins later at Parkland Hospital. Assassination was made public at 1:30.

  37. ..They’re the ones who also believe that airliners crashing into buildings cannot melt steel. And that steel cannot melt…
I usually agree with your posts. Not this time. The fuel those aircraft had on board flashed off at time of impact….it didn’t hang around and even had some of it done so, nowhere near enough of it to bring steel columns that were 1-1.5″ T to melting temperature. Not happening my friend. One needs consistent applied heat to get to the melting temperature of steel. I would argue that chairs, desks and paper, room dividers were nowhere near a good enough fuel source to do that….let alone the issue of oxygen supply in an area of a building filled with smoke.
I’ve been in the steel/fabrication industry for 40 yrs…the only way those columns “melted” was if someone used an oxy-fuel torch, thermite or explosive…IMO.
I would also like to see evidence of the the “aircraft” that hit the pentagon..

  38. ‘Melting Steel’ is a red herring. I don’t recall anyone that day stating that the steel in those buildings melted. The fires weakened the structures to such an extent that they collapsed. All this and thousands of pictures of the disintegrated airplane at the pentagon are easily found on the internet. Take a look.

  39. Well, based upon your reply, it is quite obvious that you did not expend the effort to watch the 90 minute film I posted in my first reply.
To repeat, I noted that Detective McLaren has his critics. Yet, to be taken seriously, a critic needs to understand the ideas offered and addresses the points raised in the presentation.
It is possible that your friend might be a very fine investigator, but unfortunately for him/her, your lack of attention to detail casts aspersion upon his/her work

  40. One question. Who killed Dorothy Kilgallen? Actually I have more than one question, but that is a good starting point.

  41. “Trump says he’ll allow release of Kennedy assassination files”
So when will Putin allow release of KGB’s Kennedy assassination files?

  42. I still remember the day of the JFK assassination. I was working as a radio-TV technician at a service shop. Had instant coverage visible on some of the TVs in the shop that day. The event shook me up a bit, life went on. I only know what I have seen and heard on the news and thus have no contrary opinion on this.
