  1. Wrong again lance. Trooper? Really? God there are probably a dozen or more bands better than those clowns.
BTW here’s an amazing stat a friend related to me yesterday:
Nickelback is “…the second best-selling foreign act in the U.S. of the 2000s, behind The Beatles”
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nickelback
Fifty million albums. They get no respect.

  2. Why the hate for the Hip? Gord Downie was an honest guy who cared about what was important to him.
He did not get any “artist grants” from the government. He paid his way. He was an honest poet and singer.
Fine. You did not buy his music. Many of us did. And not everyone is an engineer or firefighter(basement savers) or plumber. The classic noblemen around here.
He earned his living and his fame and the respect he received from Canadians for his work.
This is different than making fun of someone for liking and voting Liberal. Don’t hate.

  3. I totally agree with you. I don’t like ”Tragically Hip” type of music. But I do like people who devote their lives to a worthy cause.

  4. I’m not a fan of the Tragically Hip either.
Trooper is OK, but I’d rather have April Wine or Harlequin any day.
Oh and have you forgotten about BTO? Shame!

  5. My adult daughter and I just had a discussion about Tragically Hip. She worked for 5-6 years in NYC (making her mark) … and ended up falling in with a group of very close friends who were all Canadians … my daughter, being a really honest, straightforward, friendly, type … resonated well with the Canadian boys (and girls). Well, she just told me that her Facebook was a weepy mess from all her Canadian buds who,she keeps up with. They were all HARD HIT by Gord’s passing. She said they were virtually inconsolable. My daughter (who has a broadly diverse knowledge and love of music) said she never really “got” their love of Tragically Hip … which they played constantly … but really respected their devotion to this Canadian Band. I guess her friends all have the emotional constitutions of PM Socks … I wonder if anyone of them knows what a rock solid conservative she is? I’ve met her Canadian friends on several occasions … (great people) and would never mock their emotional reaction to TH … but they aren’t PM … which is another matter altogether.

  6. Prism
    Barney Bental
    Streetheart
Rush (greatest Canadian band ever, with the world’s best drummer and lyricist)
Tom Cochrane (Red Rider and Tom is without a doubt a great poet)
    Trooper
    April Wine
    The Guess Who
    Chilliwack
    Mashmakhan
    Toronto
Headpins(or any band with too loud McLeod, rip Brian)
    Loverboy
    Pepper Tree (Brian again)
    Jeff Healy
My apologies to the many, many talented musicians I have left out.
All of these bands were/are superior in talent and ability than the Hip. Gen Xers are the most musically stunted generation of all time. Gord Downey’s bleating voice was cringeworthy. His song writing skills mediocre. His performance at Live 8 set my nerves on edge.
Sympathy to the family, but Canada’s greatest? Not by a long shot.

Larry- A concise summary of what we know so far with a rational
    analysis.
The Las Vegas shooter designed a scenario to maximize
    publicity and notoriety.
The MSM ate it up like the low I.Q. sharks that they are.
The advice to not sensationalize/publicize the identity
of the culprit is similar to that given after the FBI psychiatrist
analysis after interviewing surviving skyjackers in the 60s when
    that phenomena occurred.
At the time many TV news editors followed his advice and there was
a major drop in the phenomena.

  8. Greg from Calgary beat me to it…
I don’t think it’s even close, best Canadian band ever is Rush.
Most albums sold. Most devoted fans. Most gold albums.
    Generally, no respect.
The only worthwhile thing Steven Colbert ever did was have them on his show and give a great big WTF? as to why they weren’t in the hall of fame.

I walked down the street in Barcelona, and suddenly discovered a terrible truth – Europe died in Auschwitz.
We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims. In Auschwitz we burned a culture, thought, creativity, and talent. We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who changed the world.”

  10. Well, these Totally Hip threads have proven what I have thought for decades now.
The absolute BEST kept Canadian rock’n’roll secret is SAGA. They have created an immensely diverse body of work over many decades so even a couple songs won’t tell you much, but here’s two of my faves of their more recent tunes…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn5Ce7IpeXo
And, as with most of the bands discussed here, if you’re not going to crank up the volume and bass, don’t bother listening.
Autoguy, Rush are indeed Rock Gods.

“… Kenya is proving to be a very difficult place and besides the grid is too weak to absorb all the power produced and therefore mini-grids is the solution right now.”
Kenyan officials are reported to have seen issues with the plants viability. The officials argued that the power plant would leave the country with excess power thus forcing consumers to pay billions annually for under utilized electricity. According to the official, it would defeat the purpose of clean cheap energy.”

  12. I drove from Timmins to Toronto several years ago with a Russian colleague who asked to listen to “Canadian” music. Luckily the radio stations in Northern Ontario played almost entirely Canadian content. Jan Arden, Rush, the Hip, Trooper, Anne Murray, Neil Young, Celine Dione, April Wine, Tom Cochrane.
Also some Foreigner, Styx and other bands he hadn’t heard of (I know these are not Canadian).
When we hit Toronto he went out and bought a lot of music.
The Hip were good but Rush is a world class band with an amazing drummer.
More recently I listened to an interview with an apparently famous Canadian band I had never heard of. Their music was excellent. One comment they made was that 15 years ago they would release CDs and the checks (not huge) would start rolling in. In their latest release on iTunes they had over 1 million hits and $4,000 in royalties. They haven’t figured out how to make money in the digital online world so they reverted back to a Toronto band.

  13. BTW, another kick-ass Canadian rock band that got NO mention here is The Tea Party. Bonham style heavy drumming, extremely creative writing, a lead singer who looks AND kinda sounds like Jim Morrison, they have been described as a cross between Led Zeppelin and The Doors. They broke up years ago but reformed recently, having had some great hits in the 90’s, here is one of them…

Ha, my taste in rock music is definitely “harder” and more adventurous than most my fellow SDA’ers. In my almost 15 yrs visiting here, I don’t believe a single one of my fave bands has ever been featured in all the selections the Reader Tips have offered. Personally, I have had little patience for commercial rock that still seems to be constructed around making radio stations happy.

  16. And let’s not forget Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush, Chilliwack, Northern Pikes, Crowbar, McKenna Mendelson Mainline, Downchild, Big Sugar, Lighthouse, The Paupers, 54-40, and Max Webster, just to name a few off the top of my head.

  17. ‘Gord Downie was an honest guy who cared about what was important to him’
Who here has accused Downie of being dishonest or put the hate on him?
I think you might have missed the point. Musical acts and artists who use their stage as a platform to declare their political beliefs risk alienating their fans and supporters. The fans pay their money to hear the music not some musician’s woolly headed opinions about the topic of the day.

  18. And not to freakin’ mention the very fun and talented Kim Mitchell…. or Montrose. I’ll bet there are still more Canadian notables not yet named on this thread.
I have been a huge fan of Canadian rock, it is truly stunning the depth of talent in this comparatively wee country.
Maybe the bestest proof of all of Canada’s superior rock heritage…. name one Canadian disco band. 🙂

  19. Always thought TP was derivative and pretentious, overrated. Copycat Cherrana overhype.
Oh yeah, Rush, BTO and for those that don’t know Trooper was YUGE on the West Coast. Canadian bands in decades past, tended to be regional in popularity, Vancouver and Toronto are obvious, but Winnipeg put out its fair share too.
As for the Hip, the manufactured grief is something to behold. Yes, I wore out my Fully Completely tape, their best Album, it’s 20 years old. Lots of good songs to hum along, and went to their Vic concert last year. All good times. But sorry, I’m not crying or sad, I was far more moved by the death of Tom Petty, and played his library for days afterward.
Sorry, hated Downie’s politics, and especially Turdoughs craven politicking of it all.

  22. Not a big music connoisseur but the Tragically Hip was a non-entity for me. Feeble lyrics sang over a generic rock beat? Are they even in the top 10 selling Canadian rock acts, itself a weak field? Top 20?
Splunge – Pathetic – sure – but only half as pathetic as someone who takes time out of their day to criticize them.

  25. Sales don’t lie. I think the hip seemed to annoy no one. But no one loved them enough to actually buy their albums. I don’t mind the hip – they are just massively overrated and could be accused of being can con whores.

  26. A little late to this post but…
I was only a fan of Tragically Hips first couple albums. The sound softened after them.
I was saddened more by the passing of Streetheart singer Kenny Shields this summer. They noticed something wrong when he started forgetting lyrics and seemed overly exhausted during a concert so he got checked out. It turns out one side of his heart had been doing 90% of the work for a long time and he didn’t even know it. Well that side finally got tired. He passed away with family around him in a Winnipeg hospital on July 21, 2017.
Fun fact, after releasing a couple albums the guiter player and drummer left to form a band called Loverboy. I think they made the right choice! Haha
