Machine learning is all the rage nowadays. Like most of the big trends these days, it’s important but overhyped.
Machine influence and decision-making, on the other hand, is running rampant far under the radar. It’s not that the machines are taking control, but that we’re forcing control on them.
For example, people in Britain who ask Google how to vote. http://www.bbc.com/news/election-2017-39938599
As per usual, when something interesting gets posted I try to investigate at least a little bit further into the topic.
And in doing so with Piper Harron, the math blogger, I found an interesting story of an intelligent and at least a competent mathematician with such a skewed world view that it is almost … or maybe is … a mental illness.
I found it sad and depressing rather than outrageous. Given great privileges and intelligence she has only bitterness and resentment. Sad.

Harvard Study. News Coverage of Donald Trump’s First 100 Days
Trump’s coverage during his first 100 days set a new standard for negativity. Of news reports with a clear tone, negative reports outpaced positive ones by 80 percent to 20 percent. Trump’s coverage was unsparing. In no week did the coverage drop below 70 percent negative and it reached 90 percent negative at its peak.
Damn right it will be going nowhere. For at least the past 50 years this idea has regularly cropped up especially when the Liberals are trolling for votes. It has never happened and it never will. Most of the track will have to be upgraded to accommodate the new technology, old bridges reinforced, etc. etc. Besides, there will never be sufficient ridership to ever make it worthwhile.

SWEDEN drops rape probe against Julian Assange:
———————-
WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange appeared on the balcony of the Ecuadorian Embassy in London today just hours after Sweden dropped a rape probe against him, declaring it an ‘important victory’ which saw him ‘vindicated’.
The Ecuadorian government has confirmed it will now step up efforts to allow Mr Assange to continue his asylum in its country after Sweden’s Director of Public Prosecutions, Marianne Ny, said she had decided to ‘discontinue’ the investigation into the alleged sex assault.
The 45-year-old, who has spent five years holed up in the embassy, was cheered by crowds as he attacked the UK and America and said threats against Wikileaks ‘will not be tolerated’.
He criticised the system which allowed extradition without charge and kept him under house arrest while his children grew up.

Discovering the glaringly obvious:
“A major new study out of Harvard University has revealed the true extent of the mainstream media’s bias against Donald Trump.
Academics at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy analyzed coverage from Trump’s first 100 days in office across 10 major TV and print outlets.
They found that the tone of some outlets was negative in as many as 98% of reports, significantly more hostile than the first 100 days of the three previous administrations”: https://heatst.com/culture-wars/harvard-study-reveals-huge-extent-of-anti-trump-media-bias/
That is amazing news. Assange was framed on this from the get go. It was a profound abuse of human rights. I suspect he must watch his back until he is out of the UK, however.
The carnival sideshow that accompanies the circus in America at the moment just took another twisted turn. Weiner has plead guilty to the pornography charges and Abedin has filed for divorce. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/19/nyregion/anthony-weiner-guilty-plea-sexting.html?_r=0 http://freebeacon.com/culture/abedin-files-divorce/
Does this happy coincidence mean that there will be no Abedin computer contents opened up in court, thus saving Hillary from more humiliation and will it open up an avenue for Abedin to continue her political career as the aggrieved victim. It would appear that everyone connected with the Clintons are pulling all the stops to dodge a bullet.

I also found the video to be interesting in comparison to how my father used to sow wheat every spring. He used a small disc seeder, commonly called a “one-way”, pulled by a Massey-Ferguson Super 90 tractor with approximately 80 measly horsepower and no cab. The seeder cut a path about six feet wide as it went around and around the field. He used to load the seed box on the discer using a five gallon pail with which he scooped the seed from the raised box of a 1948 Dodge one-ton truck. Primitive, to say the least, even for those times (mid 1960’s) yet he was on top of the world. If he was still around, he wouldn’t even recognize today’s seeding operation.
So am I a retired farmer and never did own an air seeder, but did enjoy the video. I thought a new 32′ of CaseIH hoe drill was a big deal for me. I even had special tarps made up for it until I got a machine shed big enough to store the drill, combine, swather and trucks. My first seeder was a 12’discer with an 830 Case.
I farmed 2 sections in SW Sask with an MF 90 WR. The diesel had about 65 HP, the gas 55 HP. One of the last Made in USA true Massey Ferguson tractors. They made two row crop models with 3 point hitch, and the Western that had a straight drawbar, and much larger tires.. You brought back good memories. My fondest recollection of this tractor is that it had a road gear of almost 30 MPH, and I had a dog that could keep up to it mile after mile.
Enjoy!! This is a 90 WR. https://youtu.be/kbLAaAiCjFw
