  1. Is it still possible to overturn Brexit? I thought they’d reached the point of no return now that Article 50 has been submitted.

  2. Margaret Thatcher would say May’s gone wobbly. The Conservative Party was against Brexit, embraced it reluctantly when it passed, insisted there would not be another vote on the subject. Now? The globalists get another shot at it.

  3. The UK Conservatives are supposedly up 20 points in the polls right now.  Unless she wildly f*cks up that lead, May’s gonna have a commanding majority to get it done after the election’s over.
Stranger things have happened, I guess.

  4. May is a typical nervous nellie type of politician, always wanting to cover her a$$ just in case.
Unfortunately, with the 24/7 media campaign against leaving the EU, they very well may end up reversing the original referendum, just like a good liberal government would do it.
This was Britain’s last chance to maintain it’s sovereignty, lose and they’ll be sucked right back into the black hole of the EU and it’s lunatic leader Angela Merkel.

  5. Some risk she loses, but the labour leader is a loon. Clear she wanted a mandate that was hers to negotiate the exit.

  6. Hope that by trying to cover all the bases she doesn’t snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

  7. A few of you really don’t get it. Do you actually think about anything, or do you just blurt out whatever happens to mind? Of course she wants a new mandate; she’s got two years of ugly negotiations coming up with the EU. Last thing she wants is an election in the middle of that to derail it completely.
Besides, chances look good right now with Official Opposition Labour in complete disarray.

  8. I may not be 100% up on my Brit politics, but I try to be reasonably polite when posting.
    (Cheeky bugger)
Wait, did I type that out loud…

  9. May learned well the lessons of Chretien. You call an election when it is beneficial to you. The doom and gloom Re-Moaners have been caterwauling since last June despite the fact that the British media and many politicians had lied to them throughout the referendum process. Now is the time for May to strike while the iron is hot, British pound is up, unemployment is down, the EU is in disarray, her opposition parties are in a funk, and the common voter is beginning to rebel at the influx of more refugees and migrants that are decidedly against integrating into British society, free movement in the EU has proven to be a curse. The time to call an election could not be more apropos. If this is used, by the Re-Moaners, as an attempt to re-visit the Referendum it will backfire on them as I expect a larger than usual turnout of voters in favour of British Nationalism. Watching the ‘intellectuals’ rioting in the universities of America because of the Trump win, I’m expecting a whole lot of popcorn and beer time this summer as the Brits and French go into these elections and a whole lot of the ‘intelligentsia and intellectuals’ are going to be horrified at the outcome.

  10. The election was called because Corbyn is the oppo. She’ll beat him like he owes her child support and she knows it.

  11. Comment wasn’t directed at you.
Your comment wasn’t visible at the time.
    Note the timestamp.

  12. So, 2 more months till the election, then a few months forming the new government, assuming she wins, just like Harper did. blah, blah, blah.
I doubt very much that Brexit will occur at all.

  13. Dream on, this is no referendum part deux.
Corbyn has split labour in two and created a deadly internal battle, lib-dems are dreaming about who knows what, UKIP are mandateless.
Unless May does something incredibly stupid she will greatly increase her majority and be able to kill off remoaners inside the tories.

  14. May’s Conservatives are up 20 points on the UK Labour Party, and that’s why she’s calling an election now …plus the Tories have zero seats in Scotland and can only go up from there.
However …former Ontario Conservative leader Tim Hudak was up 20 points on Wynne’s Ontario Liberals in the last election and he managed to blow it BIG time, so anything is possible, although being as stupid as Hudak was in that election would be very difficult to match.

  15. Any politician who tries to backtrack from Brexit will face public outrage, tumbrels and an unfortunate loss of position.

  16. Your argument is sound, though the next scheduled election was actually set for 2020, about a year after Brexit negotiations would’ve concluded. Still, the motivation is the same — May knows that the UK is going to get battered by the negotiations, and voters are going to blame her for every bit of bad news yet to come. Winning an election now at least buys her (a) a mandate to tell voters come March 2019, “Well, you all voted for this — twice” and (b) another couple of years post-Brexit to get back into their good graces.

  17. All above are interesting observations, but looking at the hard facts. May is and never has been anything but at the best to the left of a conservative party that is in no way conservative has no principles even less scruples and hasn’t had or been since Thatcher kicked it into touch and unfortunately only temporarily. May was very much in the Remain camp and despite all the shouting and protestations about leaving, Article 50 always needed to be triggered as it is the process that “informs the EU that said country wishes to start negotiations with a view to leaving the Union” and stipulated in that is the time frame of 2 years. What happens after that is un-charted territory. The day after that two year period ? Its about the wording, its “negotiation” thats all.
So why wait until this March to trigger Article 50? There has so far been nothing of substance come out of that time period, nothing except to keep the confusion and mis-information levels running at full pace. Besides a bit of bluster the EU has continued to proceed with its grand plan and complete indifference to the mere peoples. The UK establishment is continuing to comply and proceed with all directives and orders from on high, there was always going to be another election that as Lance states is always going to be about BREXIT, the apparatus that runs and rules the UK is never and has never entertained the idea of leaving, who-ever the ruling elite is and who ever runs and is indentured to the system is not preparing nor arranging for the leaving of the EU its just a question of how the shepple will be told to keep accept this and acquiesce.
May is not running a minority government, non of the parties have a firm BREXIT agenda, weasel words and sly talk are all part and parcel of both parties agendas and as seen in the referendum both have a majority of MPS and apparatus that are decided Remain. Any options of a third party are far far from an option in the UK as the forces of chaos ensure any contenders to the Status Quo are always relegated to history, present case UKIP who couldn’t order an agenda worth defence if threatened with oblivion.
So why the election? Believe what you want but it most certainly won’t result in the outcome that May is professing as the reason or impetus.
Its only my opinion but anyone that sees this step of election in anything other than those terms is deluded especially if they think this is a step that will cement the leave process.
