The United States carried out a missile attack in Syria on Thursday night in response to the Syrian government’s chemical weapons attack this week that killed more than 80 civilians, American officials said.
Dozens of Tomahawk missiles were fired at an air base in Syria, military officials said.
[…] The speed with which the Trump administration responded — and remarks earlier in the day by American officials who said that options were still being considered — appeared intended to maximize the element of surprise and sharply contrasted with the methodical scrutiny of the use of force by the Obama administration.
Broader commentary from Michael Ledeen and Glenn Reynolds: THAT ESCALATED QUICKLY
Trudeau just crapped himself.
The ‘red line’ was crossed once again. The term ‘no more Mr. Nice Guy’ comes to mind. I’m not saying that it was the BEST thing to do but it was the RIGHT thing to do.
A year after Obama drew the ‘red line’, Assad killed 1400 people with sarin gas. There were no consequences issued by the administration.
We’re definitely in a new era.
But… but… but… Trump… in league with the Russians… Putin’s handpuppet…
That sound you hear is millions of anti-Trump heads exploding as yet another of their cherished narratives is neatly confounded.
I still sense a set up.
Why should I believe the same lying cretins who started this conflict?
I trust the current Syrian Government and the Russians slightly more than I trust the US war machine.
Of course percentages of zero are hard to quantify.
This “Gas Attack” is just too photogenic and such perfect timing.
Assad may be many things, but a suicidal idiot he is not.
And does anyone think Russia would encourage such a stupid act?
Of course we should note, prior to US aid for the “rebels” Christians,Jews and other minor religious sects were living at peace….
Now?
“Why should I believe the same lying cretins who started this conflict?”
That would be the Syrians: the rebels who thought they could topple the government and government that decided it would fight it out.
“…the methodical scrutiny … (of Obama)”
That must be code-speak for $h!tt!ng one’s pants at every confrontation.
MSM doing their best to spin in favor of the Dems. As always.
Trump has been rolled! Bye bye Mr Trump. The USSA will not survive this final act.
CNN (very fake news) is claiming that Russian soldiers were hit in the attack. If true (doubtful) this could get really interesting. I’m sleeping in the basement tonight.
I recall justin saying “if you kill your enemies, they win”
President Trump just made them winners.
For the record, I believe the rebels or Israel were behind the chem weapon attack.
If Assad in fact used sarin then yes I approve of the air strikes. Let it be a warning there’s more where that came from. This could also be seen as a shot across the bow to Iran and NK. Shows them Trump isn’t shy about kicking some *ss.
Please though Donald – the last thing we need is another decade long treasury busting intervention in the ME. Syria is a mess. A mess with no easy fixes and the media would exploit the smallest of setbacks to destroy your presidency. Don’t be stupid.
Hope he sends the “after” pictures to dear leader Kim
https://www.google.ca/maps/place/Ash+Sha'irat,+Syria/@34.4938347,36.9019144,5454m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x15231f64c404792b:0x32d2d93754f360f!2sAsh+Sha'irat,+Syria!3b1!8m2!3d34.4941284!4d36.9460462!3m4!1s0x15231f64c404792b:0x32d2d93754f360f!8m2!3d34.4941284!4d36.9460462
That’s my view. I do not believe that a lot of Trump supporters will agree with this move. I also think there will be a big price to pay. I liked things a lot better when (true or not) the claim was Trump being aligned with Putin.
Assad launches chemical attack from an airbase and Trump sends missiles to level the base in response. Seems appropriate. No boots on the ground. Just take them out. Send a message. Obama would still be mumbling and bumbling at this point if he was still in charge. This IS exactly what Trump said many times he would do. He said he would respond to stuff like this and not be a little faggot like Obama.
But… but… but… the chemical attack was all a provocation and Assad and Pootin are the good guys.
That sound you hear SDA resident Pootin fellator’s heads exploding as yet another of their cherished narratives is neatly confounded.
FTFY.
Exactly, and the best comment so far.
Now can we all see how the Russians preferred Donald Trump? The idiocy of the “collusion” theory comes into full bloom.
Look for new conspiracies of Trump attacking as cover for the “criminal investigation” he’s currently under, still searching for evidence.
The US say the Syrian AF is using chlorine and sarin bombs routinely. The objective of the attack was to destroy the airbase the missions flew from, and if some Russians got hit, boo hoo, and wtf are they doing there huh, after sales service?
I hope we haven’t been hoodwinked by a false flag missed by the suspect US intelligence community, who have hardly distinguished themselves recently.
The key is military responses can now be limited. Instead of Stormin Norman and a million troops, cruise missile, limited airstrikes, drone attacks and special ops are used. In an out. If we let you use chemical weapons there, your terrorists will use them here. No courtesy call. Handled. I like that.
Forget nation building and ousting Assad. Leave him to the Russians. Don’t try to solve this civil war. The local warlord politicians say nuts to that.
“The key is military responses can now be limited. Instead of Stormin Norman and a million troops, cruise missile, limited airstrikes, drone attacks and special ops are used. In an out. And so do I…good one!
“And does anyone think Russia would encourage such a stupid act?”
Absolutely. In all likelihood the Pootinista junta have done it themselves to draw US into a conflict that US has no way of winning.
While it is refreshing that at last we have a man of action in the white house I think there is more to this story than ‘Assad is a bad guy’. Not trying to pick winners or losers but I suspect Trump like W were misinformed – deliberately. It is more likely the gas was used by ISIS than Assad.
As all Muslims are lying sons of bitches, what if ISIS was the actual perp (if this attack actually happened)? Not that I have any complaints about a shotgun blast of cruise missiles fired at any group of Muslims you care to name.
Of course ISIS had chemical weapons and kept them hidden all this time until now and used them against the most useless of targets. Because they are such strategic geniuses that they figured out that if they gas all those people, Trump will bomb Assad’s airbase and that would be a huge strategic and propaganda win for them except that they would not be able to take credit. And of course ISIS would never used chemical weapons in combat because they would not want to ruin their international image. Do you people even listen to yourselves?
A muslime military base was destroyed, good move. It’s good to see a world leader take action. CBC’s anti-Trump mouthpiece Mesley is obviously disturbed by this. Her hero ‘small potato’ is a pussy by comparison. This is good to see… finally action against the muslime terrorists.
Flashback…
http://m.washingtontimes.com/news/2013/may/6/syrian-rebels-used-sarin-nerve-gas-not-assads-regi/
Testimony from victims strongly suggests it was the rebels, not the Syrian government, that used Sarin nerve gas during a recent incident in the revolution-wracked nation, a senior U.N. diplomat said Monday.
Carla del Ponte, a member of the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, told Swiss TV there were “strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof,” that rebels seeking to oust Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad had used the nerve agent.
Chances are pretty good Trump has been goaded here.
As someone noted earlier the pictures are too perfect.
The flashing arrows too direct, the timing too immediate, the uniform messaging too clear, for what normally can be seen produced from that godawful messy cesspool of a conflict area. It reeks of planned putrid exploitation.
And on the likelihood of probabilities, that fits the Daesh-fundamentalist approach to “winning” much more so than any of the other actors in theatre, vile as they may be in their own way.
Daesh clearly have more to gain from this, and it is closer to their genocidal approach to armed conflict.
It is hard to believe a beleaguered Damascus is this strategically inept.
Their survival to this date would argue against that assumption.
Trump has been snookered by the Ovomit holdovers in the US Intelligence Industrial Complex, State, or combinations of them and at all levels of the bureaucracy.
And further led astray by his impetuous character, fuelled by enjoying the glow of doing a deal with Xi on the South China sea, and Xi’s pet rocket terror fatboy-Kim.
I like Trump, and he is still vastly preferable to the alternative we had last November. But not his finest move to date.
The cruise missiles hit a Syrian Airbase.
The impact was felt in Damascus, Tehran, Moscow, Beijing, and hopefully Pyongyang.
Remember who else just used poison gas to off his half-brother?
This strike also reminds everyone in the world, America has a New President.
Trump gave the oppressive Asshat Regime a much needed lesson. The only people who have a problem with that are good-for-nothing muslime sympathizers, and they can go fvck themselves. Trump should keep destroying military bases on both sides of this conflict until they stop the violence against civilians. Strong action is the only thing muslimes understand or respect.
So, even of the chemical attack happened, it seems that there are many who think killing a bunch of Sunni jihadists is a bad thing.
What’s worse, is that folk actually think the pretext is the reason.
Roll on armageddon.
Laughable. Sure Bill Clinton got Congressional authority when he lobbed a bunch of cruise missiles at OBL in Afghanistan.
If OTOH, Trump plans a full scale attack with a division sized force, yes, referring the matter to Congress would be a good idea.
I’m not aware of any plans to formally declare war, or conclude a treaty, as Obamabug did with the Iran deal.
IOW, it’s all politics; actually warfare, bordering on sedition. Nobody cares what the Dems think, they’ve made themselves irrelevant.
The thing is, Syria is no threat to us, the Saudis are.
I have been skeptical of these gas attacks on civlians all along, they always seem to happen just when the globalists need to put Russia out of the loop. Trump appears to be overwhelmed by institutional (globalist) DC and his thin retinue of more sensible advisors now seem to have lost their ability to influence a president who acts more on raw emotions than logic.
Anything that makes McCain, Graham and various neocons happy is probably not a good thing.
So that didn’t take very long, the best spin I can put on this is that Trump has concocted a master plan to provide cover for his long-term strategic goals and this is mainly for show. It does somewhat lower the fever pitch of Russia-Russia-Russia accusations and murky innuendo, for the time being.
Maybe Assad is willing to repave his runways in order to get Trump off the hook with his political foes. I don’t expect this will be a simple period ahead of us, with Syria divided into so many bits and pieces and so many bad dudes moving their chess pieces around. But as bad as Assad may be, I don’t really see any credible alternative and thus I don’t really get why Israel is that gung-ho to end his reign, do they expect things to be better for them if Syria is carved up like post-Soviet Afghanistan? That could be way worse than a bit of predictable Hezbollah mischief.
The other possibility is that Trump has been bought and paid for by the Bank of Soros. I was never that huge a fan, would have rather taken my chances with Cruz or even Rand Paul, but probably those two would have lost to Her Shrillness.
Anybody commenting here on what has transpired that knows more that the American president I’d like to ask them where they received their information from! Was it from CNN, CBS, ABC, or the multitude of other so called news services. The same news-services that have been actively filtering the news they have been feeding the American people for, for the last half century. I’m pretty sure that Trump has a little more information than the American press and he is acting on a little more information than what the MSM has available. Unless the intelligence services of America have been completely corrupted by the past administration then we have to assume that there is a reasonable expectation that the present American administration has acted in the best interest of the Free World.
Thats not who we are comes to mind
I doubt very much that Assad used chemical weapons. He doesn’t need to. Trump is a political neophyte and he was duped.
(best case scenario)
If Trump wasn’t duped into attacking Syria, then he is doing what Obama wasn’t stupid enough to do.
(politically)
Either way I think this is a foreign policy mistake. The Russian invasion of Ukraine is worse. What does it matter *how non-combatants are killed?
ISIS/al Qaeda did this with the gas weapons they looted from Libya, just as they did the earlier gas attack when Obama was Prez.
*Putin killed 10s of thousands of non-combatants in Grozny with artillery and FAEs.
(FAEs are a type of WMD, what they do not incinerate they kill by consuming all the available oxygen in the target area)
I am going on opinion here. I do support trump , this strike is two fold for me , I think trump was duped, why would asad draw international attention all that will do is rally the international community to depose him , I think it was rebels how ever I don’t think rebels have fighter jets to deliver the ordinance (I believe that’s how they were deployed) but in any case the rebels want asad and his secular gov out of power they want Islam in secular out….it has zero benefit to asad to do this and totally benefits the rebels to do this.
The second thought is Russia supports Assad , trump has been labeled as colluding and working with and being best friends with poo tin ….you can throw that out the window now. Finally the left can shut their pie holes on that front .
A lot of you here seem to be really confused. If dog “A” bites you ,you don’t seek justice by getting after dog “B”.
Most of the time a simple solution, to anything, is the best one.
Having said that, I understand that a lot of you prefer a circle jerk than appreciating a simple solution to a simple problem.
Assad didn’t bite Trump.
At any rate, Trump just blew a goodly percentage of his domestic support by playing from the Soros/GWB/Obama playbook.
There are a lot of Soros fans who claim to be conservative, it seems, and a lot of dangerously naive fools who think military interventions are done for reasons of morality.
All the crocodile tears over dead Sunni/Wahabbis disgusts me no end.
“American administration has acted in the best interest of the Free World” Antenor
Assad is done. He is a crazy stupid fool He only has 2 choices
1. Face a War crimes tribunal, he gets out of Syria alive
2. Wait for the next CM. Trump must take him out if he stays.. Yes! Trump is responsible for him
This will not workout well for ISIS or Iran… Russia will bluster, but back the ouster of Assad & join & commit to the Anti Terrorist war. Putin favors Assad’s brother, who is not as crazy, and he just wants his Syrian bases. A working relationship between Trump & Putin is NOW possible
All the usual anti-Trump crowd love him…Democrats Shumer & Pelosi, only Hillary’s VP is outraged.. Who would have guessed…If the conflict lasts longer than 60 days Trump must go to the Congress for funding. Trump has the power to declare WAR…nobody better forget that.
CNN Lemon reminding everyone that Obama tried.. and tried.. Trump just doing what Obama would have done…Lemon can’t discus anything without mentioning the GREAT OBAMA…
JMHO
Can someone explain to me, how come a judge could very easily block Trump’s executive order when it was about an unimportant thing ( banning muslims from 6 or 7 nations out of 57 )
but no judge or no one else blocked Trump’s executive order on a very serious thing that may have grave consequences ( bombing Syria )
I don’t get it.
what am I missing here?
Prat. Suckered by propaganda. I guess the CIA is winning, everyone else loses. If this was where a poison gas bomb was launched from, then there would be more there and they would explode and release their contents.
Apparently the Russians were warned ahead of time so, then, were the Syrians. It is safe to assume they just hit empty buildings.
ISIS and other CIA/Erdogan fans were cheering the attack.
I trust this was just for show and will not be repeated.
Good to see the usual SDA conspiracy theorists weaving their predictable Soros-Freemasons-Bilderberg-CIA-Neocon-Illuminati fantasies! Did I forget to mention “elites” in there somewhere? If so, sorry, it’s pretty early.
Gotta give you credit: you don’t waste time coming up with this stuff!
NME666, John Robertsons agrees Why should I believe the same lying cretins who started this conflict?
by which he means the CIA which set up all the Arab spring crap at the behest of the Dementocrats.
The rebels created by the USA, the so-called moderate opposition. Sorry, I’ve just had enough of this and I am no longer willing to give the CIA the benefit of the doubt. And they keep bombing the wrong side. Erdogan was central to this gas attack charade.
Exactly Thanks for reminfing people.
Please release my earlier post.
It is trapped in the filter.(probably because it has too many links.
The links contain a series of photos showing Sen. John McCain on his 2012 trip to Syria at which he was photographed with several men who are now leaders of ISIS, including Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Leader of ISIS.(Caliph)
McCain was one of the men in congress who energetically applauded and lauded President Trump’s strikes against Syria.
(not that McCain ever met a war that he didn’t agree with)
The cowardly libranos still have not commented on the Syrian air strike. So contrived is their message that when confronted they cannot articulate it. Think Harper would have had trouble organizing his thoughts on the matter?
Wonder if Trump bothered to give bongo a heads up…..
“Wonder if Trump bothered to give bongo a heads up…”
Why on earth would he? There was only one country he needed to give a heads-up to.
And he did.
(CBC Radio has been unintentionally amusing this morning: lots of woofing and chirping about the PM’s response to the attack, Global Affairs, blah, blah, blah. Yawn. Who much cares what our children’s crusade of a government in Ottawa has to say?)
Bill you need to get off the anti-Jew bandwagon.
On a lighter note, of unintended consequences this attack wounded Rachel Madow and exposed the good old boy club at her station. They sideline their rising cable star and give her gig to Brian lying williams because?
By the way – and especially for those here who seem so big on synchromysticism – yesterday (6 April) was the 100th anniversary of the US declaration of war against the German Empire.
Woooooooooooooooooooooooooh… Coincidence? I think we should be told!
uno, you are wrong so often I wonder why you waste time posting here.
