  4. Thanks for the video Kate. I know that place very well. Wood Mountain is the site of the famed Northwest Mounted Police Post where Sitting Bull and 5000 Sioux crossed into Canada from Montana following the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876, and where they had defeated Custer and his men. The elevator in the film still stands today, although it needs a little paint and tender loving care. One of the most picturesque areas of Saskatchewan. Wood Mountain is also the site of the oldest Rodeo in Western Canada, they have a great museum that is filled with interesting artifacts such as Gene Autry’s saddle. There’s also a Provincial Park where some of the buildings of the original NWMP police post have been reconstructed.
    The film says says they handled 150 carloads of grain a year. They can now handle more than that in one day in nearby Assiniboia, and the cars are twice the size. 1981 was the time when everything changed, and companies went to bigger elevators, unit trains, and the Canadian Wheat Board started to lose popularity.
    I’m not sure if the video was filmed as a actual documentary (live on scene day at the elevator,) or if it was acted out. It did however bring back good memories. Thanks again!!

Abtrapper – the CWB no doubt became what you say, but I well remember my mother talking of the days when the local agents would try to buy the wheat as No 3 and not very good, only to sell it down the line as No 1 excellent grade. My grandfather had to fight to get his grain properly graded. So the co-ops sprang up, which gave more assurance to the farmers that their crops would be properly graded.
    The CWB is a different puppy. It only ever applied to the prairie provinces and a small bit of BC. Other grain growers were allowed to sell their grain independently. The defense of the CWB was that it allowed all prairie producers – no matter how far from the Great Lakes or tidewater – to sell their grain abroad with no penalty for transportation (see also the Crow rate). It was the compulsion that rankled the growers, along with the realization that Ontario/Quebec grain producers were not under the same restrictions but could sell directly to the U S – a very lucrative market at that time (several Alberta farmers ware jailed for driving a truckload across the border – one of them, Rick Strankman – is now a Wildrose party MLA).

  7. It’s interesting that you mention that. The Federal riding (Cypress Hills-Grasslands) that includes Wood Mountain is represented by CPC MP David Anderson who has taken the seat for the last 6 elections, and with over 60% of the pop. vote, hitting over 70% in 2011.
    Provincially, the seat was represented by “Yogi” Huyghebaert, who was a former RCAF captain with the Snowbirds team. He represented the seat for the Sask. Party from 2000-2016. Huyghebaert served as the minister of corrections, public safety and policing from May 2009 to May 2012. He lives on a farm near Glentworth, the next town to the west of Wood Mountain.
    Trust me when I tell you that this is not CWB country.

I am certain they are currently regretting spending, sorry, wasting, the amount of money they have on your education, which, considering your conduct and easily assessed level of intellect, was a colossal waste for them and an exercise in utter futility for your professors.
    Quite frankly, at the risk of sounding repetitious, your parents have been taken for as ride as in spite of the obscene levels of tuition and related costs totalling some 70,000$ (US funds) per year, the efforts of your professors have been in utter vain as you have revealed yourself to be little more than an illiterate moron. But worse than being a simple moron, you are an ungrateful moron, an ungrateful, sexually defective, sexually deviant moron who infects public discourse with insipid whining and whimpering and all with the stomach turning guttural undercurrent of Ebonic ghetto-speak.
    On the other hand Ms. Vargas, I have given consideration to the reputation, rather, to the notoriety, of Pitzer College and can’t help but thinking that you are in fact, in substance and in your sexual defect, the very manifestation of your professor’s diligence and as such, the very pride of Pitzer College. In fact Pitzer College, a hotbed of cultural Marxism, politically correct White Guilt and grinding sexual perversion, has produced many graduates who are a mirror image of yourself.
    A perfect example of this found in Pitzer College alumni, one Fabian Nunez, former California Assembly Speaker and the vulgar Liberal who spawned the charming little Esteban Nunez. Like you Ms. Vargas, Esteban Nunez, a mentally defective and entitled little murdering psychopath, took exception to one innocent and unsuspecting Luis Santos and stabbed him to death on the grounds of San Diego State University. Of course everyone took pity on the vicious little killer Esteban Nunez, even Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was weeping when he heard how oppressed and misunderstood little Esteban was, so the good Governor cut his sentence for murder to a leisurely 6 years. How proud Californians must be to have creative and stabby little Esteban turned loose to once again hunt down unsuspecting victims.
    Perhaps little Esteban will grab a carving knife and start stalking lesbians on the grounds of Pitzer College. I’m sure you will agree there would be an element of hilarious irony to that now wouldn’t there Ms. Vargas, the entitled son of Pitzer College alumi running amok on Pitzer campus grounds stabbing to death as many Marxist pillow-biting ass-pounders, carpet munching beaver-jockeys and cross-dressing perverts to death as he could. Then once little Esteban Nunez finding himself in court again on multiple murder charges he could have Daddy Nunez ring up Governor Schwarzenegger to once again provide little Esteban with glowing character references.
    Of course Ms. Vargas, should killers, mass murderers and dusky hued self-detonating Muslim purveyors of The-Religion-Of-Peace start wandering around the hallways of Pitzer College slaughtering random staff members and students, I would not look to the Pitzer College administration for help as they have much better things to do rather than keep the college safe………very important tasks such as the vilification and harassment of young white girls who have committed the heinous, intolerant and hateful crime of wearing hoop earrings. Priorities, priorities, priorities.
    Ms. Vargas, no doubt my realistic assessment of the totality of both your intellect and personality has you in a bit of a foul mood so it is with caution that I would make one request of you….if it’s not too much trouble.
    In the event that your mother finds herself with child once again, and considering it was that same Latino sewer of a reproductive system that incubated you, could she please seek the immediate assistance of Dr. Kermit Gosnell.
    Dr. Kermit Gosnell, much like you Ms. Vargas, and many others, including his mentor Ms. Margaret Sanger, is a lifelong democrat and has similar views on life and politics in general. However, politics and life aside, your mother could avail herself of the good doctor’s professional services, as she should have done in your case, and in so doing will provide both samples for medical research as well as sparing society the burden of yet one more, very tiresome, very irritating, mildly entertaining and certainly nauseating, physical manifestation of all that is horridly wrong with humanity.
    And of course Ms. Vargas, cultural diversity, equal opportunity and affirmative action are pillars in democratic societal structure and as such you will, as will your mother, be very pleased to note that the good Dr. Gosnell spent virtually the entirety of his career working with “people of colour”. In fact, so fond of his “patients of colour” was Dr. Gosnell, that he kept many of them hanging around for decades, for old times sake you understand.
    Unfortunately Ms. Vargas, Dr. Gosnell is semi-retired and aside from crafting fine office furniture and handsome licence plates, he doesn’t get out much these days so your mother will have to act quickly should she find herself infected once again,….sorry…..if she should find herself pregnant once again.

  9. What screwed grain farming royally in West. Canada and where the NFB video was shot was Pierre Trudeau and the Liberals allowing 21.5% Mortgage rates to gouge farmers and ranchers. 1979-81 saw some record grain prices with wheat and durum hitting $6.00 per bushel for number 1. Yet after the loan and mortgage payments were made, there was nothing left. Goodale and Trudeau were much more interested in saving Quebec and shoving the Charter of Rights down our throats than they were saving western farmers and ranchers. Later in the 80’s the CWB wheat prices became some of the lowest on record. Trust me, if you walk into a bar or restaurant in SW Sask., don’t mention Trudeau, Goodale or 1981.

    Republicans in the State of Maine, led by Governor Paul LePage have sought to minimize the burden that Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients have placed on tax payers. This new effort requires all Able Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWD) to either work at a part-time job, volunteer for 24 hours every month, or participate in some sort of job training program.

In my younger days I used to haul grain to a facility just like this one and marvel as the elevator agent would scurry back and forth manipulating wheels and levers amid a never-ending cacophony of noise, clouds of dust and copious amounts of pigeon crap. For a time I had a part-time job at the local Sask Wheat Pool elevator “coopering” boxcars to get them ready to receive grain just as the agent in this film was doing. Of course this was before the implementation of the more efficient hopper cars. My father sold his grain to the local Federal elevator since he considered the Wheat Pool to be a socialist operation. He was good friends with the Federal agent who was always willing to open the doors at any time to receive grain or conduct a moisture test. The wooden grain elevator, despite its lack of technology, was indeed an amazing structure.

    Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more stupid. The plan now is for a flypast over Parliament Hill by RCAF Super Hornets on Canada Day 2019, so the Liberals can say “See what we did.” But then, the aircraft will go back to the US Navy until 2022, ostensibly to train RCAF pilots, which don’t exist now and won’t exist then. So, we are going to pay up to $7 Billion to acquire 18 Super Hornets to NOT fly them in the RCAF to fill a capability gap that doesn’t exist. My head hurts. If there were a capability gap, it could be quickly and cheaply filled by 27 available Kuwaiti F-18s which are identical to ours and for which we already have pilots and technicians – and for $330 Million instead of $7 Billion. Here’s another wrinkle. We’ll be buying the Super Hornet through a Foreign Military Sales (FMS) contract with the U.S. Government. That means a 15% surcharge and no commitment for industrial offsets for Canadian industry. This is unethical, dishonest and corrupt at a big league level and the Auditor General, Parliamentary Budget Officer and Ethics Commissioner really should be taking a serious interest.

  29. And here I just found out that the Wood Mountain Pool elevator that is featured in the video , that had been relatively well preserved, was demolished in 2014!! Sad. It was built in 1928.

  30. And I was very sad to hear that the old Wood Mountain Pool elevator that is features in the film had recently been demolished. (2014) The Village of Wood Mountain had kept it as a historical site, as well as the portion of the RR Tracks that are within village limits.
    All is now history, however the Wood mountain Rodeo is still alive and well.
