Ultimate General: Civil War is a game with which much of my time has been spent. UG:CW is still in early release, but it’s probably the best early release I’ve ever seen. This is a new major battle from the January update. I didn’t have much problem playing this as the Union, not like Fredericksburg, but then, I knew about Jackson on the left.
thehistoricalgamer can be very frustrating to watch as he haphazardly moves his units into flanking fire, doesn’t fallback and doesn’t use detached skirmishers but he still wins.

Forget the fact that the ex-governor of Alaska undoubtedly knows well the complexities of living in the North, that she understands the importance of the oil industry to an economy, but focus instead on how she can see both Russia and Canada from her back porch, that she likely has a great recipe for moose stew, and can ride a snowmobile with the best of them.
Instead of seeing the plus-side of having an ambassador to Canada who has governed an entire neighbouring state, and who was the vice-presidential candidate for respected Republican Sen. John McCain’s run for the White House in 2008, progressives from all platforms decided their first response would be to denigrate and ridicule her.
No doubt they are proud of themselves.

Hey Lance, I have more than a passing interest in the U.S. Civil war. I’ve read Grant, Sherman, Sheridan, Longstreet, and Mosby’s accounts along with some short pieces by other officers. The one common complaint that I had with all of the accounts was the difficulty in visualizing what actually was happening. Word descriptions are fine if you already know the territory. If you don’t…. well maps but it’s hard work. That’s why I really like the graphics of that game (but I’m not a gamer). Given the poor state of U.S. Education and the dull history of the Civil War provided in High Schools, I could see something like this as a positive teaching tool….without the alternative history of gaming. So much could be done to make learning history interesting.

However, there is enough actual history slipped into AC that if kids play the game, later in school when they study history they already have a frame of reference. It’s one thing to read about a revolutionary war battle, quite another to have already virtually run though it and seen the troop formations and the ebb and flow for yourself. It’s education by stealth.
Similarly, KSP doesn’t model n-body orbital dynamics. It’s all been reduced to spheres of influence and patched conics. However, that’s exactly what NASA used to get men to the moon. An 8-year-old kid today can get a gut feeling for orbital dynamics due to playing with it themselves and making spectacular mistakes. Before KSP, you had to be able to understand Buzz Aldrin’s PhD thesis to get that kind of knowledge.
