De Beers is shelving immediate plans to study an expansion project at a remote northern Ontario diamond mine after failing to get support from a neighbouring aboriginal community, a “disappointing” setback for the world’s top diamond producer, the mine’s manager said.
They should just shut it down and move out to get the attention of the locals. Fewer diamonds will push up De Beers’ diamond prices, so they win while the local morons get a lesson in Free Markets 101.
An issue not generally realized is that mining has become high-tech with miners needing at least high school graduation and computer literacy. This eliminates most of those on northern reserves leaving only a handful of low-wage jobs for them like cooks and janitors. Northern resource development has not become the job generator for natives that everyone believed it would. But by saying no they are no doubt passing up some royalty payments.
Hey! I LIKE fish soup… 🙂
(With a fresh loaf of French bread; mmmmm)
Canada is a truly politicaly correct deranged country. Who on Earth gives a foreigner Queen retard, and a bunch of lazy drunk crack-head Indian retards, veto power over Canadian industry. Canada has reached PSR (Peak Socialist Retard).
I was under the impression from the last fish soup controversy with the Cadillac lady that there were media reports of a number of that band’s members working at the mine.
Anyhow, this is disgusting, the free lunch crowd wants nothing but free lunches and nothing to do with helping themselves out of the cesspool they live in. Oh where oh where do the millions of dollars go?
The real problem is that no one in these communities is under any kind of financial pressure, nor do they have any incentive to earn money. After all, no one can “own” property on a reserve – except for the chiefs, who somehow end up owning everything. This means that most native bands have become a sort of natural resources mafia, which is understandable with developments that abut reserve land, but has come to mean any kind of resource development within 150 miles of a reserve. Band administration can demand extortionate payouts from industry, (DeBeers has sunk literally tens of millions into “community development” in Attawapiskat), and if they don’t get what they want, they can simply kill new development without any kind of backlash from their own community. No one actually depends on industry for work, income, or housing. Virtually all natives who do work, work on band administration.
Everyone gets a subsistance income, a shitty house, and a free trip to the great metropolis of Timmins twice a year, regardless of whether they work or not. And if they do work, they still get to live in a shitty house, since they’re not allowed to own or develop their own land. All this happens because non-native taxpayers foot the bill, and the chiefs and band council quietly make millions and millions of dollars disappear.
To be fair, no one but DeBeers really cares what happens up in James Bay, but other native bands have had a horribly crippling effect on the economies of many small rural cities and towns, where they have killed, crippled, or otherwise discouraged virtually every attempt at economic development for the better part of a decade.
No…the real problem is Canadians always roll over and never do anything about anything except complain. I have been to Attawispikat. It is a welfare sucking shithole full of crack-head drunks people who despise Whitey. It should be defunded fortwith.
Los Deplorables,
I have spend time in Timmins, Fort Albany, Kashetchewan, Attapiskat, and Peawanuk. They are terrible towns. With an explosive rate of population growth. They are welfare-sucking holes. However, you can’t simply dismiss entire communities full of people. Natives in those communities haven’t done much to improve their own lot, but a lot of the blame has to fall on the Indian act, the ministry of Indian Affairs (or whatever it’s called now), and the band leadership in those communities.
Bands in other parts of Ontario have done a MUCH better job, (Fox Lake in Chapleau comes to mind – the contrast is shocking), but even they tend to see the disruption of economic growth pretty much everywhere in rural Canada as an “aboriginal” birthright.
Unfortunately to make changes takes political will(guts) which no one in the western world EXCEPT Trump has.
Let them eat air.
To complete the salt water coast tour of Ontario I’ll add Fort Severn to your list. Moose, Peawanuck and Albany I never minded spending time in. Atta, Severn and Kash fit your description in my opinion. I’d place the blame a little more squarely on community leaders and the band council, though the Indian Act is certainly a poor framework to work within.
The fact that they’re limiting development in their backyard isn’t surprising. I have first hand experience with a poor reception in Attawapiskat which jeopardized 2 weeks of work that injected a tonne of cash into that community. Had a poor reception in Severn once as well, almost pulled out from the work we had planned there as well now that I dig into the memory banks.
Hardest hit will be Ontario’s coffers. Let’s not forget about Mcguinty’s extra special diamond-mining tax he rushed through once Victor mine became a reality.
The only good thing that ever came out of Attiwapiskat is our dog. My girlfriend got him through a rescue organization. He’s great! No alcohol or drug problems with him. And you can leave a garbage bag with gasoline in it laying around and he won’t even touch it!
Yes. In fact De Beers, billed as “the world’s top diamond producer”, is actually the world’s top diamond hoarder, as De Beers rushes around the world buying up diamond mines and the raw diamonds which are producer therein to keep the price of decorous cut diamonds rare just to maintain the illusion that diamonds are special and hard to acquire.
In fact diamonds are not rare or special, and De Beers has who-knows? how many thousands of tons of diamonds hoarded in huge warehouses in Antwerp.
Handouts, handouts, a life supply of handouts and they’re still living in squalor in God forsaken areas which make it more expensive to send in supplies and services. They do not live off the land, they demand all the same conveniences we have while telling those of us who work, pay taxes to support them they own all the lands. Is there something wrong with this picture? Am I misinformed?
Canada – the most hostile investment environment on earth, period!
How is that relevant to this story?
A hearty cioppino with a loaf of crusty French bread is my go-to winter dish. Mmmm mmm ! A variety of Fish, crab, shrimp, scallops, and white clams … yummy
“Canada is very important, as it’s the most stable jurisdiction for diamond miners
Better to have a BLOOD DIAMOND on your sweeties finger … to make some faux Indian Chief feel powerful.
The idea of dismantling the Indian Act has been floated many times. The Indians wont hear of it, or rather the chiefs wont.
A lot of resource jobs are McJobs. Hire a coupla locals, give them nothing to do. Maybe supply a pickup if there are roads to drive (and hide) but hey they’re on the payroll…
Diamonds are sparkly stones with zero value unless they are in a drill bit. De Beers is the equivalent of OPEC. Criminals.
“a foreigner Queen retard”, I hope you know she has no power here in C, although she is the head of state (May the Lord be thanked). Parliament, such as it is, makes the decisions, the G-G initials same, and Our Gracious Lady signs on the dotted line. Do you want to see potato head as President for Life.
Liz,I’ve worked or lived around numerous Rez’s and there rarely is any game to hunt.
Some of the young First Nations gentlemen often spend their days or nights with a case of beer,a pickup and several rifles while they travel up and down Rez roads and shoot anything they see.
iow,there IS no game left.
Why are there no canoe sheds?
Sooner or later the government will have to make a decision as to who is running the economic engines of Canada. Right now its activists and that does not bode well in the long run.
When will we stop allowing 3 % of the countries population the right to control the development of natural resources, the building of pipelines and any other project that they feel they can hold to ransom. In real terms their approval is for sale as long as the Chiefs and band councils are appropriately rewarded.
“When will we stop allowing 3 % of the countries population the right to control the development of natural resources,….”
Oh, I dunno…..when the other 97 percent grows balls, maybe?
My ancestors have treasured the magic white stars since the time of the Giant Albino Beaver. Get off my land whitey!
