Pleasing Your Enemies Does Not Turn Them Into Friends

Dear Conservatives;

If people are going to vote Liberal, they’ll vote for real Liberals, not fake ones.
Further, as Conservative leadership candidates, has it occurred to you that these days you spend almost all of your time aping Trudeau on immigration, while he spends zero time aping you?

  1. Brian Mulroney says current immigration process just fine, urges leadership on pipelines
“Former prime minister Brian Mulroney has waded into the debate over screening newcomers for “anti-Canadian values,” saying he sees no need to toughen the immigration process as one Conservative leadership contender is suggesting.”
    http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/brian-mulroney-calgary-pipelines-1.3761173
Mulroney is a Progressive.(as are the Conservative Party Leadership contenders, except for maybe Leitch)
Mulroney was the PM who set the ridiculously high immigration targets that we currently have.
Zoolander doesn’t ape Conservatives? That’s because he couldn’t if he tried. Conservative issues are above his head.
We saw him being interviewed before he won the election. He barely grasps feel-good Liberal policy positions.
He may be putative Liberal Leader, but I’m sure he does not set policy any more than he understands it.

  2. its about east vs west, not values. Now that the conservatives are liberals it’s no surprise. Whatever you have to do to win Wynne-Tario is all that matters.

  3. So Rona Ambrose thinks Donald Trump is not fit to be President of the U.S. let alone a conservative. Ambrose is, now, dead to me.
Ambrose is a Harper conservative. Yes, that Harper, who spent his time in office being Liberal Lite. The same Harper who likes to hang out with fake conservatives like Gen. Colin Powell at Bohemian Grove. Yes, that Powell, the weak kneed cowardly lion of the Scooter Libby/Valerie Plame affair. He knew that the charges against Libby for exposing Plame’s CIA connection were false but he did not speak up. Surprise, Powell and the other attendees at Bohemian Grove don’t like Trump either.
To potential conservative candidates out there I say: Go big or go home! And to the Conservative Party fundraisers who email me for money several times a week: bugger off until you have a real conservative leader.

  4. Beginning right after their loss in the election, there remains a feverish campaign by the Conservative Party to raise money. I’ve been contacted numerous times by telephone and email asking for my support. I’ve politely told them I won’t be contributing until I see a clear indication that they aren’t on the path to out-Liberal the Liberals. So far, with a few exceptions, some of them seem to be contemplating the appeal of such things as electing a female leader, embracing marihuana legalization, feminism etc. Not a red cent until I see a clearer more conservative platform and a principled, sincere leader, maybe Leitch.
It would be suicide for the party to abandon conservative principles before voters begin to realize how awful the current administration truly is. There may come a time when there’s some atrocious fu by the Liberals and it would be tragic not to capitalize on it by way of true conservative values.

  5. What the hell does ‘APING TRUDEAU’ MEAN?
    WHAT IS APING?
I have never heard that description before and I am old?
    Seriously.
    .

  6. I could not agree more..!!
Kelly Leitch..?? I will Vote for her on this single issue. In Fact I would go further to say its high time we spoke about the Elephant in the room; ISLAM
I want to see a complete halt to Islamic immigration. They are nothing but a group of Feral sub-humans whose only goal in life is to take over/destroy our country and replace our values with SHARIA.
    Not happening on my watch.
Close our borders to ISLAM and keep it fully open for anyone else – regardless of colour/race/language/religion. If Japan can do it, there is zero reason why we can’t either.
    Its a matter of survival.
    Kelly Leitch
Bring that up as a platform…and I will volunteer.!
Bring up Privatizing the CBC….and I will Volunteer.!
Bring in TRUE FISCAL Conservatism…and I will Volunteer.
…and if you bring in total Accountability in Politics….I’d be ecstatic.

  7. Do you suggest pretending to share Lib values to win and then go back on promises made? If not, then in what way would this be advantageous just to change the brand and continue with the same old wishywashy-washy principles?

  8. What the conservatives have failed to understand is that Stehen Harper was not the problem with the left and the media ,it is anything with the label ” conservative “. The bulk of the present leadership candidates make Harper look hard core right wing. Is there hope with Kelly Leitch ? We will have to wait and see .

  9. No sarc. That’s what politicians do… That’s why they poll so often. Eg even Jack Layton used private health care. There are no sacred cows in politics. right? Win Ontario to win, and how else would you do that except to appeal to the Politically correct generation?

  10. Muldoon makes about as much sense as his goofy son does on the CTV morning show. In other words none.
Ambrose is the new Kim Campbell and fortunately she will never be PM.
Cons look like they are doing well raising money but not one dime of it will come from me.

  11. I’m glad to see that I’m not the only one unimpressed with Rona Ambrose. When she was environment minister, I thought she was simply big hair and not much else.
It seems she hasn’t advanced past that.

  12. The ONLY “doublethink” I witness on a daily basis eminnates from the left. I believe Psychiatrists call this article “projection” … where someone who is guilty of an offense … projects it on their opponent.

  13. “WHAT IS APING?”
Monkey see, monkey do = aping. It is an old expression. Cliché actually, banal even.(‘scuse my French)

  14. Think back to PET. How long was it before we were finally rid of him?
The younger voters in the country went ga-ga for him in 1968, which was why he won. I was about to start high school and, even then, I knew we were going to be in trouble.
Some voters smartened up and gave him a good spanking in the ’72 election (the one with the ridiculous slogan “The Land Is Strong”), giving him a minority government. Unfortunately, the half-life of voter intelligence is very short, so he got a majority 2 years later.
It took until 1979 before we were rid of him, however briefly. Unfortunately, the Libs were determined to punish us for that show of disrespect and returned him to office with yet another majority, after his phony-baloney “resignation” as party leader.
He finally left office, doing so on his own accord, in 1984. So it took 16 years and voters never had the guts to toss him out permanently.
I’m 60 and I have to wonder whether there’ll be another Conservative PM before I die.

  15. Sorry, didn’t read the piece, just guessing.
    TRANSLATION
    Dear Conservatives:
    STOP trying to win power.
Be satisfied with being an honourable and effective opposition.
For, that is the fate of anyone running as a true conservative.
There is no conservative constituency in Canada, or anywhere else that I can detect.

  16. I just decided to support Ms. Leitch for Conservative leader. And have lost my enthusiasm for Ms. Ambrose.

  17. There hasn’t been one for over 40 years. The last decent Conservative leader was Bob Stanfield, but voters didn’t like him because he wasn’t a charming crap artist like PET.
Joe Who had good ideas, such as selling PetroCan, but they was ahead of their time. The reaction of voters was “Whaaaaaaaaa! We want our government oil!” (There was a reason why the PetroCan building in Calgary was nicknamed Red Square.)
The federal PC party went after him because of that.
The only reason Mulroney was elected in ’84 was because voters got tired of the PET-era Liberals. Lyin’ Bryan bought the 1988 election through stunts like awarding the CF-18 maintenance contract to Canadair which, conveniently, was located in Quebec. (Bristol Aerospace, based in Winnipeg, had the better bid. Go figure.)
Mulroney eventually saw the writing on the wall, and skedaddled to save his miserable hide. As a result we ended up with Kim! Campbell, who, as PM, was almost as bad as Prince Potato Head.
The PCs were decimated in the 1993 election, and we ended up with the Liberals for more than a decade while Reform mutated into the Conservatives.
    The rest is history.

  18. “The last decent Conservative leader was Bob Stanfield, but voters didn’t like him because he wasn’t a charming crap artist like PET.”
I didn’t like Stanfield because when Pearson lost a confidence vote in April ’68, Stanfield allowed the Liberals to set it aside and continue as the government until they could organize their convention to replace Pearson.
    The guy was a Loser.
Setting aside that non-confidence vote…(that was a precedent, by the way, WTF is conservative about that?)…allowed PET to capture the Liberal leadership on the 4th vote with a mere 51% at the convention.
If it wasn’t for Stanfield’s abysmal leadership, we wouldn’t have had PET in June ’68, we’d have had Paul Martin sr, and we wouldn’t have Zoolander today because he would never have been an MP in the first place(too stupid) and he wouldn’t have ridden to victory on his dead daddy’s coattails.
I won’t even mention bilingualism or multiculturalism or the NEP…oh wait, I just did.
    Stanfield sucked!

  19. What can I say …. siggghhhhh. The CPC has learned their lesson … don’t pissoff the media. So now we are experiencing the advent of the Big Tent CPC which embraces all the politically correct multiculturalism BS espoused by the media. Ditto for the Progressive Conservative party of Ontario.
Common sense such as Leitch suggesting immigrants be vetted is racist according to the media , Micheal Chong and the elite CPC brain trust. I guess until there is a civil war (civilization vs Islam) in Europe they won’t change their minds.
Right after the election loss the CPC was constantly asking me for donations. My answer was and is bugger-off.
Unfortunately with the feeble contenders in the CPC race we can most likely look forward to another 4 year of Islam loving Junior at the helm.

  20. It’s pretty tough to change a culture through politics, likely not possible. The CPC is in a tough spot. As Me no Dhimmi says accurately, “conservatives” are rare. Happy-faced socialists are much more common and dour-faced socialists dominate the culture. Libertarians are more rare than conservatives and they are the only ones who are even close to having a consistent policy platform.
Perhaps the CPC can use as their next platform: “The party of less policy confusion but promising to use a lower gear in the inevitable ride towards the abyss of bankrupt welfare states”. Much more honest than the free shiny objects competition platform of the last election.
Otherwise, what Steakman said. Islam is not a race, merely a pathology.

  21. “Aping” means “to imitate”.I’m surprised you haven’t hear the term, it was in use fairly often in my youth, but has fallen from favor the last 50 years or so.
“ape ‎(third-person singular simple present apes, present participle aping, simple past and past participle aped)
(intransitive) To behave like an ape.
    (transitive) To imitate; mimic.”
    From Wiktionary.
As to Conservatives, and candidates who run under that flag,Leitch is so far,the only one who has dared to mention the immigration situation. Political correctness has won the day for the progressives, mention ANY of the liberal issues, and the Left with all their massive power, will turn on you and you are politically dead.
We will have to have either an unfortunate event in Canada, such as 9-11 in the USA,or a massive failure of the economy to turn things around.

  22. It’s quite interesting how people remember history.
Joe Clark won a minority government and brashly said he would govern as though he had a majority. His first and only budget he raised gasoline tax 18 cents a gallon. He was defeated on a left wing tax and spend attitude. He was not conservative in any way. Like Goldstein says, people will vote for real liberals not fake ones.
Mulroney beat Fozzy Bear Turner, twice. He was as hapless as Stephan Dion.
Progressive conservatives are just liberals. We need another Reform movement, without the turncoat Manning leading.

  23. “Aping” dates back to the 1680s. Charles II was King of England. Louis iV was King of France.
It is not new, it is an Olde term.

  24. Had high hopes for Bernier being the one via his slash and burn style
promises for getting our economy freed up from government excess and
interference. But once it was noted that his initiative on the fake refugees
from Syria mess mostly consisted of ignoring same, his honesty couldn’t
be faulted but not the answer I want.
As for the other uninspiring clumsy vote whores, no thanks.

  25. Yeah, get our economy freed up from government excess and interference and give the new jobs to migrants.
    Way 2 go.
I guess he’s expecting votes from these foreigners, cuz he sure ain’t getting mine.

  26. Don’t forget that Stanfield got the job as Conservative leader as a result of the infamous Night of the Long Knives a few months earlier. The party turned on Diefenbaker and wanted to get rid of him.
He was good, though, as Premier of Nova Scotia and, even more important, he wasn’t PET.
If you want to blame someone for saddling us with Dirty Pierre, it’s Lucien Rivard. As a result of his “daring” prison break (how that happened was so bizarre that one couldn’t make it up if they tried), the then Justice Minister, Guy Favreau, resigned. Pearson, anxious to make smoochies with Quebec, brought the Three Wise Men (Gerard Pelltier, Jean Marchand, and Prince Potato Head’s daddy) into prominence. PET eventually became Justice Minister himself.
When Pearson stepped down, the Libs had their convention, but it was almost a foregone conclusion that someone from Quebec would get the job, partly out of tradition and partly to satisfy Quebec. (Remember that those were the days when the FLQ went around blow up post boxes.)

  27. Another thing there, Sarg. Government excess and interference is mainly done at the Provincial level.
The Federal government has no control over that. What’s honest about Bernier blowing smoke up your ass?

  28. I’d forgotten some of the details about Joe Who’s time as PM. I do recall, though, that he was openly raked over the coals about his proposal to sell PetroCan. (I think the NDP used that point against him in one of their ads.) He also wanted to move the Canadian embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and fur flew over that one as well.
But remember PET’s tactic after he lost the election. He resigned, complete with crocodile tears, and won the sympathy of the press. When Clark lost the non-confidence vote, the Libs called on him to save the country (i. e., the party). I’m sure that was all deliberately planned and not only did they go on to yet another majority government (the election was over well before the time the polls closed in B. C.), we got stuck with him for another 4 years.

  29. I said as soon as Shiny Pony won his majority that we’re stuck with him until at least 2023. If the Conservatives continue behaving as though their tail is stuck between their legs (moreso, they behave as though that’s where they WANT it to be) you can up that to at least 2027.
The country’s probably beyond saving at this point anyway. The culture is already thoroughly Liberal, and a decade of Pony in power will only solidify that culture, along with a few hundred thousand more Muslim immigrants. Any future Conservative government will probably be several steps to the left of Mulroney’s, so there’ll just be no point.

  30. Lorries article simply seems to be focused on simply finding a reason to criticize the conservatives.
This is a nothing burger of an article.
Never forget Lorrie is pro AGW and believes fully in Climate Change. I doubt he has a conservative bone in his body.
Above commenters make excellent points regarding the need for Conservatives to be more conservative no less.
Even if they were/are Goldstein and the rest of the media would then criticize them for that.
I would truly like to see conservatives ape trudeau – that is to, when they address the media to do so and in a hammy, lisping, empty suited manner, to speak to the media like Trudeau does. (yes I know it wont happen)
    T
But that we are forced to read media accounts of Trudeaus speeches or pontifications as if they come from a keen mind aware of anything more than his own image, is a joke.
Justin Trudeau does not tie his shoes in the morning without checking with the Librano braintrust first.
The manchild is a joke and he continues to make a joke of the office of the PM
But hey – anything to get rid of Harper – which believe me Lorrie Goldstein helped achieve.

  31. Mulroney wasn’t a conservative–he was a Mulroneyite, looking out only for himself. He just wanted to play with the big kiddies and hoped that they’d seem him as one as well. (I wouldn’t be surprised if Reagan thought of Lyin’ Bryan as a pipsqueak with ambitions way above his station.)
He beat Turner in 1984 because JT was one of PET’s lot. The country had enough of Trudeau, so it wouldn’t have mattered who the Liberals had selected as party leader.
Mulroney won in ’88 because he got cozy with Quebec. He did it partly because he was from there himself, but he wanted to keep the separatists at bay. The rest of the people who voted for him bought his codswallop about the Free Trade Arrangement, promising that prosperity was just around the corner. (I’m still waiting.)

  32. “He did it partly because he was from there himself, but he wanted to keep the separatists at bay.”
Yeah, him and his close buddy and appointed cabinet minister, Lucien Bouchard.(First Bloc Quebecois Leader)
Look, Quebec is never going to leave and never was going to leave.
If I’m wrong then, Hallelujah! It’d be like getting a tapeworm removed.
Did you know that part of that $400 Million that Chretien’s Liberals stole from Canadian taxpayers during Adscam was given by the LPC to the Parti Quebecois because Quebecers weren’t giving them enough and the LPC had to shore up the PQ’s finances so that they could continue to play ‘Savior of Canada’ against the PQ?
Yup. You see, without the PQ in government, there is No Way that a separation referendum can happen.

  33. Perhaps the CPC should rename itself the “Sir Wilfred Laurier Party, after reading Stephen Harper’s recent article in NP calling Laurier the greatest Canadian PM ever.
That would eliminate the “conservative” tag that so terrifies the left, young, and progressive, and we could get the Trudeau band of Liberal gangsters out of the government.

  34. You’re gonna have to have some reference to substantiate those claims.
    Adscam was $40m
1995 referendum margin of victory was 1%.
Libs provided financial support to PQ after that referendum? Not buying it.

  35. You don’t know? Most here do.
Tell you what. Since you weren’t here at SDA, why don’t you look up the date and go back in the SDA archives and check it out yourself?

  36. “If I’m wrong then, Hallelujah! It’d be like getting a tapeworm removed.”
I’ve never heard of Quebec being described as a tapeworm infesting Canada. Parasites, leeches, vultures, sponges, carrion eaters, but never tapeworms.
    Congratulations.
I remember during The Great Referendum, listening to a phone-in radio show in Vancouver. An old lady was crying that we should do anything we could to keep Canada from breaking up, ANYTHING!!! She was in tears.
After the host ( might have been Pat Burns) calmed her down a little,it became apparent that her main concern was that if Quebec separated, she might not get her pension cheque every month.
One half-crazy old bit** I knew, that owned a small town Newspaper, editorialized that we should also do anything, write our MP’s,phone in on talk shows, send letters at random to Quebecers telling them we love them, etc., etc, (and I’m NOT kidding about that).
I thought the Country was going nuts!
Unfortunately,Chretien and the voices of chickenshit fear mongering won the day,and we’re stuck with ’em.
Worst of all, when they start the “gimme this and that or we’ll hold another referendum” bullshi*, NO politician ever says,”go ahead, and we’ll invite the Rest of Canada to vote on it too”!
    For THAT politician,I’d vote twice!

  37. There must be two Lorrie Goldsteins, as the one I have followed and corresponded with by email for a number of years about his articles has been totally against the AGW scam and against carbon taxes. He believes in climate change much like I do, as climate has always changed and that it is not due to human activity. So I don’t know where you get that view.

  38. All I can add is, why does anyone, especially those of us who are Conservatives, want to listen to Lyin Brian? Come on! He’s the main reason why the PC’s federally no longer exist. If I want progressives, I’ll vote Lieberal (I don’t, and I won’t ). Too bad Mad Max is from Quebec. Otherwise, I’d be seriously considering him. But I need someone from anywhere else; not another Quebecer.

  39. Exactly! I still am irked, nonplussed (to be kind) about how he snowed jobed the west and then gave the F-18 contract to Quebec.

  40. Unless the party fulfills their promises, their governance will be short-lived. If those promises come from from the Liberal playbook, might as well abandon the conservative brand. Mulroney was a Laurentien Elite/Power Corp liberal. Joe Clark was a delusional careerist with chin envy. Why bother out-Liberaling the the Liberals just for the terristory if you’re constrained by your false promises.

  41. Um….didn’t anyone else think, “it’d be kinda good to have a military coup at this point”? I no longer believe in democracy: Obama, Justin, Clinton, Trump…….need I say more? Ok I will -any system that results in these perhaps is worth questioning, at least. Or worse.

  42. Give the Conservative party $100.00.
Then give them hell when they ask for more.
It is quite enlightening to ask them what the conservative party stands for, and then ask them WHY they stand for that.
If they can’t explain why conservative ideas are good, how will they convince anyone to change their vote?

  43. There are no federal or provincial conservative politicians fro me in Ontario.
    I am disenfranchised.
But I would gladly vote for Mike Harris again if he ran for Ontario premier.
Will NEVER vote for the ontario PC’s current liberal leader, but might park my anti-liberal protest vote with the NDP since they have an equal shot in my Toronto riding against the liberal incumbent.
