U.S. troops have been stationed in South Korea for decades not only to deter Pyongyang, but to keep Seoul feeling secure enough to stay reined in.
Those days would seem to be over.

Leaders the world over now know.
If Obama pats you on the back – you best check it for a target.
Having lived in Seoul for a couple of years, I can tell you it’s a very eerie feeling you get when a squadron of fighter jets, on full afterburner, scream northward towards the DMZ, just a couple minutes away. You hold your breath, listening for the sirens that would warn of the coming artillery barrage.
Deterrence. Threaten more pain for the gain, always back it up, to stop it from happening at all. I think (hope) China deters North Korea and their malevolent midgets. They are a pipsqueak state starving their people while they “make money” for the military. Iran is the problem no doubt.
At least Iran pretends to limit their nuclear ambitions to electricity as they export their oil and build their weapons.
I hope one of these days the Chinese leadership will become so fed up they’ll buy out the NK military and “retire” their current lad leader.
I doubt that China will allow SK, with or without help, to overrun or destroy NK. We know from history on that one, as we should but don’t from the recent 15th anniversary of 9/11. Once again terrorists roam unhindered under the fiction this new bunch won’t launch large scale attacks.
Instead of showing strength with tyrants, show weakness. Cow tow to them, make up stories about how you’re avoiding war by giving $billions to a rogue state. One day the world will conclude the US is nice, except for her deplorables, and stop using them as bait and switch for their corruption.
The chair remains empty and we’re still waiting.
The header caption explains well the foreign policy of the current administration. The only successful accomplishment this administration has is in domestic policy, and that is one of economic decline and degradation as well as increasing explosive racial tension.
I don’t think that this will happen. China will not allow it. Crazy or not, China needs that North Korean buffer. If South Korea was ever going to do that, it would have been done already.
Before President Park leaves, she should just put a bounty on Kim’s head. I’m sure there are generals who would like for Kim to have an accident.
How many airliners full of US cash has Obama flown to N.Korea ? This IS what Obama does for America’s sworn enemies ? Right ? Taxpayer dollars to despotic regimes … so they will start “liking” us ? American dollars to secure Obamas anti-American cred ? Your children will be paying for it all … for a very long time.
Well – it has evidently been US policy for the last six years.
What the Americans do not understand, is that they are too big and wealthy to disengage. As their power decreases, other countries will start taking bites out of them. How about “Somali” pirates raiding the roadstead of New York? Americans are not so feeble YET.
Pacifists are simpletons.
