  1. That’s good (about the canning). We can our produce also so we can have our garden all year round. More people need to relearn some old ways. It’s not good that hardly anyone can do stuff people normally did just 80 years ago. You have more independence that way.

  2. yup, I will try and swim the ocean, that way I won’t have to depend on those nasty aeroplanes. Do you have a million 100 watt lite bulbs in your basement also?

  3. He didn’t mean you. You should watch more TV. And if you don’t smoke tobacco, you should start.

  4. Salsa day! Nice firm cheap tommys are ripe, as are the peppers, onions and all the goodies!
    Can you jaLApeno, Ricky?

  5. LOL, first I inferred that a garden is good and being self sufficient and canning your own fresh healthy produce from that garden so that you don’t rely on others as much is great. Then I inferred there are many skills the old timers had that have been lost over time and have made people less self sufficient and more reliant on others, being less free.
So of course I see now why it was easy for you to think I meant we must get rid of airplanes and swim everywhere.
    *chuckles*

  6. The residents of Wynnetario/Ontario would be wise to start canning, theywon’t be able to afford food after paying Wynne’s taxes and the huge cost of hydro and everything else needed to survive through the winter.
We should start building root cellars to keep vegetables….can’t afford hydro, so off we go to the past to save the planet from sure destruction. Meanwhile the windmills whirl and thump and solar panels provide power for those who have the money to set them up and collect from those who don’t.

  7. Good for you Lance. What are you canning?
I do not can, but my wife does. So far this year she has made peach jam and will make strawberry jam shortly (I hope). She has also made a number of small jars of an ethnic relish called Ekra. It is made from carrots, tomatoes, egg plant, and onions. One generally eats it by putting a rounded tablespoon or two on your plate.

  8. I looked up Ekra relish and it looks yummy. I like carrots but they can get a little boring. I got some recipes for it. Can’t wait to try it.

  9. Made 4 gallons of mustard pickles yesterday. Mustard relish and corn relish next weekend

  10. Good for you. It is yummy. Give it a whirl. You and family might like it as a side dish for a meal, or, like one of my sons-in-law, raid the fridge and have some for night lunch.

  11. You might want to cut back the rates of onions added. The finished product can be a little intense if you have too much onion for your taste.
Sean Peake, I forgot, corn relish is on the to can list here also.
Last year, because we were moving off the farm, my wife made enough plum jam to probably last for making fold over Christmas cookies until we cross the river. The tree was loaded with a few 5 gal. pails full.

  12. Correction Lizj
solar panels provide MONEY for those who have the money to set them up and collect from those who don’t
“power” don’t come into it, except political power.

  13. Interesting. Ikra sounds like carrot preserve (relish/pickle?). How else does one keep vegetables for 6 months over winter without a suprstore shipping them in from a hot place.

Kimchi is the pickling method I use. It’s good if you like hot and sour.

  15. You cook Ikra, then process (pickle) it and put it into a jar that can be sealed. Like jean says, it is pickled. The sealed jars are then just put on the shelf in the pantry along with other preserves.

  16. Patrick, in years gone by, that is what we used to do. We lived in a village not far from here, and had no car, and walmart was not yet invented. Being single now I just let walmart do my canning for me. I was being a smartass, t’is the nature of us dyslexics:-))

  17. Maple Leaf chicken for Sunday supper, Mitchell’s bacon for breakfast on Monday, and Burns canned ham sandwiches on Wednesday. Vlasic pickles from the CO-OP are fine by me.
Opps, almost forgot. KFC and Burger King when I drive to Moose Jaw! Love the Double Whopper!

  18. When I was a kid about 8 or 9 the neighbors dog came over and killed about 50 chickens were were raising for slaughter. Upon discovery of the deed my mother announced that I wouldn’t be going to school as we were going to ‘process ‘ the dead birds.
We sat about plucking drawing and canning.
At the end of the day all were in jars on the pantry shelf.
When my father came home from work a coupla weeks later he shot the dog.

  20. That Mitchell’s bacon, the thick stuff, is great. Buy 5 or 6 everytime it goes on sale under $10 a pkg.

That’s a classic. You made my day!! Good old country justice!!
